Thread: Making Rangers Master Hunters
I've been having a lot of semi-heated discussions with friends of mine who are elite combat classes, and it's come to my attention that the Ranger is a severely underutilized class. We're supposed to be the best hunters in the game, but we're FAR from it. Here's my breakdown, along with some suggestions to improve our usefulness.
I apologize if this gets long-winded or has been covered elsewhere - this is all based on personal experiences =)
1) Currently, the best "hunters" in the game are Commandos. They can hit a Krayt with a flame shot, fire a few rockets, and collect their great loot. Wonder why so many people are Commandos? They're the best damage-dealers, bar-none. Please do not think I'm asking for a nerf, but there should be a variety of ways to go about hunting.
Idon't seem to be dealing nearly as much damage to creatures as the descriptions led me to believe. Is the creature to-hit broken at the moment, or is it just a very very small boost? Perhaps, as with the Rifleman 2.5x melee multiplier, Rangers should get a 2.5x boost to hitting animals, while commandos get a 2.5x boost to hitting NPCs and vehicles. To balance that out, you could apply a 2.5x DECREASE in Ranger NPC hits, and a 2.5x decrease to the Commando's creature hits. Commandos would still deal enormous amounts of damage, but they'd have to think twice before soloing Krayts.
2) As a Ranger, I should be able to direct my group to aim for a particular spot on the animal - its Achilles Heel, if you will. Squad leaders get a group aiming command, and I think a similar hunting-based command for rangers would be good.
3) Perhaps we could get a slight melee defense against creatures only - a Ranger would understand the hunting habits of his prey, and know how to avoid being eaten alive by them.
4) Additionally, the trapping becomes useless on anything moderately large. I can manage to hit a Rancor with traps at a fair rate of success, but I have a 100% failure rate on Peko Peko Albatrosses, Krayts, Kimogilas and the like. I understand it's a huge animal, but the trap should at least have an effect, perhaps greatly reduced or MODERATELY less (50% or so) likely to work in the first place.
5) Right now, the only reason to hire a Ranger for a hunt is to find the animal a little faster than you could by looking around yourself. I propose expanding the search radius of the tracking command to 1024m, as well as expanding our radar to 256m. This way, we could more effectively steer people away from dangerous MOBs, while still providing an excellent chance of locating a particular prey.
All of these suggestions should scale on a related tree (ie, the group aiming should be ) and become increasingly effective as the Ranger approaches mastery.
Please feel welcome to comment and add to my suggestions, or point out any fundamental flaws in the reasoning. I truly love the idea of a ranger, but we seem to be lacking in our effectiveness, not living up to our full potential.
Please, SOE - show the Rangers a little lovin'!
I hear Ya, While I don't Agree with Everything, I do agree with some things.

Nraas is doing a **edit** fine job of getting our voices heard.
I'm not Knocking on you (your a Radiant Ranger after all) but your Topic is often One that Appears on the Boards.
Along the lines with Ranger weapons, Conceal working for PVP, CH pet /NPC traps etc. (I know you didn't Bring any of these things up, etc)

I'm a dummy lol
Glaza-X is correct in that most, if not all, those requests are already on the Wishlist.
- I justwant to ensure that the forumstays lively even during the period where GreenMarine is not actively looking at our profession.

Those darn Chefs are apparently also going toget a piece of the GreenMarine action (along with Smugglers)...
- I am so jealous.

Oh, believe me, I know they've been stated =) My main goal was just to summarize again my personal opinions on what could make Ranger a little better.
The Ranger forumis one of the more mature and fun to read forums on this entire board, and I second that NRaas is doing an amazing job.
I agree with it all. We really need a better advantages against animals. I want Rangers to be as big a threat to animals as Commandos are to people/animals.
yes i agree, we have hunt master title for a reason, it doesnt really show right now.
Like the complete inability to trap basically anyhting over CL 90 or so.
The current creature to hit bonus is nice, but most of our skills can be modded up to 100 thats 25, and alot of the bonus is in scout
I think we should have better bleed shot, or the idea of the ranager bow with the gradual damage over time
I dont have that much of a problem landing traps. I came accross an Ancient Bull Rancor the other day, and figured what the heck, Ill give it a shot... its only level 95.
I landed the first 3 out of 4 traps I threw.... and well because of that, 4 was all I got to throw. But it was fun, and I dont think 75% on a level 95 creature is all that bad for me.
I wish traps lasted longer than a few seconds though... its kind of annoying to miss every other combat round because I am standing there to throw a new trap.
If I could wish 1 thing for rangers, it would be to either have traps last ALOT longer, or to not lose a combat round and especially not stop running to throw the **edit** thing. You would think rangers would have learned enough to move his feet and arms at the same time while being a scout that he shouldnt have to worry about it anymore.
The bottom line is, in my opinion, that Rangers should be masters of the PVE side of the game. Rangers need to do more damage, collect more hides, and in general, with a few tactics, completely own most of the creatures in the galaxy at master level - regardless to which combat class is chosen.
