I want to know what you guys mix with your rangers, particularly melee profs.

I personally am starting to lean towards rifleman, but I'm starting to think that a melee ranger would be awesome.

Send me some feedback.

I am a Master Ranger first, and TKM is my means to that end. I find that the up close and personal tactics suit my style of play. For a while i was a master pistoleer, also a close range weapon prof. TKM is powerful up close and really fun, there are times I miss the ability to pick targets off at a distance, but nevertheless I am having a blast. Melee has impressed me so fully, that I am going to go pikeman next just for fun.

Since I dont have to stick to one type of weapon, my plan is to do them all, and find the ones that I really like and keep it. For now, melee seems right for me.

Master Ranger/Master Fencer. I love being a melee Ranger. Still wish our to hit bonuses would apply to melee, but will just have to wait and see on that one. With all the defenses, and the Center action, I can tank the thoughest critters with ease.

Well, I'm not quite there, but I'll be a Master Brawler soon, and 0440 Swordsman someday. I play very nearly exclusively PvE, and not too many E have ranged. And I like the personal nature of melee. I gotta say that I'm really liking the variety all 4 trees in Bralwer offer. I know stacking will be adjusted, and thats fine, but its pretty neat to see the mob with anywhere from 4 to 6 status effects active on them, hehehehe. Now if only Swordsman hadn't lost that very cool Bleed!

Jedi will never be a starting profession...Looted items and quest items will never be better then crafted items, this is not a loot based game...CH will return shortly...CH and BE will not be back in game...Rangers are getting their revamp next!...The stealth system will not be changing in the spy expertise...Need any more examples of things the devs said that did not hold true?

Im a Ranger/Fencer and im loving it mainly because I do decent at PVE but still can kick some butt in PVP, with the stun damage I cut through people wearing armor like butter and usually land for 230 damage a hit in PVP. As for PVE im a little weak at that because of my low defences so I am usually the first to fall when fighting NPC's. this iwll all soon change.

Oh and BTW the movie with Tommy Lee Jones who is a survivalist in the movie and teaches some bad ass martial arts reminds me of TKA/ranger combo

I like three types of Rangers, all within a standard "look" that I feel a Ranger should have. (I'm old-school RPG btw)

1. Ranger/Rifleman - trades bow/arrows for rifle. Still a sniper. More a Hunter now. Sean Connery from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comes to mind when I think about this Ranger.

2. Ranger/Fencer - Aragorn anyone? Trades sword for...sword. Still a stereotypical Ranger.

3. Ranger/Pikeman - Ranger with a hunting axe. The Celts could fall into this catagory. Or a combat staff. (Druids)

Most other combinations just, ummmm, aren't Ranger-ish to me, although they may be good in combat. Pistols and carbines being the worst, because those are very non-Ranger. TKA is 'ok', guess it would be closest to a 'natural' monk.

Yes, I do compare Rangers to the old fantasy game Rangers, because quite simply, that's where the Ranger originated and where I was influenced most with how I play a Ranger.

Ranger/Melee is fun. I started Carbine, went Master Brawler, then Commando, and now Pikeman because melee is just, well.. fun (did I say that already ).

It feels good getting up close and personal, more like a D&D Ranger I think. Plus combat is more enjoyable when you run into it instead of run away from it.

I've noticed two frustrating things so far though. First is being kited, either by creatures that try to run away when they're just about dead, or NPC's with guns. Funny thing is creatures and NPC's can attack while running but you can't. Second is the armour hole, in melee you're very dependent on armour and when a few attacks bypass it, it can really change the tide of battle quickly (damage taken spam -> 20, 35, 40, 27, 410 *ouch*).

Overall I feel it's worth it though.

same here, I tried Rifleman, CH, and BH and had some fun but when I deceided to go Fencer I had the most fun I've ever had. Instead of running away trying to avoid being hit I'm running into battle looking to get some. Fencer is great(especially for wooks since we can't wear armor yet) because of dodge so you rarely get hitbut now with the bleeds not stacking and Fencer not having a KD(since dizzy/lunge doesnt work on creatures with 4 legs) I found it hard to solo some of the tougher things I used to be able without being buffed because the battle lasted a bit longer so I was eventually being out damaged by the creature. So I too have decided to try Pikeman out and so far its pretty fun. I cant wait to try area KD.

*Shudder* I remember my Pikeman days. If I dropped my pike, I might accidentally hit that critter on the foot, but not much chance otherwise. Fencer works wonders for me. Now, if only those pesky Imp Patrols would stop running away like cowards when I attack. I hate chasing down those Imps. heh

TKM here. I can fianlly kill animals instead of being killed. I never went to an advanced planet alone, until I made TKM, and now I don't hunt on the starting planets unless they have a good resource shift. I have never mastered an elite ranged profession (have had pistoleer, rifleman, and LLC 4), but I have no need to since TKM (flavor of the month, I know) is so powerful against creatures.

Thing that is a big advantage with melee rangers is the harvest is right there, no running around and back hoping the corpse rot don't get you. I've been both, I know

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

I started a pistoleer/fencer ranger on eclipse with fred helping me (thanks! ).

Goal is 0041 pistoleer master fencer and 0040 ranger. That leaves 7 skill points that I'll either use for some pistol skills or .. who knows

So far its been a lot of fun, I can open up with shooting a creature with a bleed or just for good damage, then I can switch to fencer and clean up it and all of its now aggro buddies. If they run away, switch back to the pistol.

I think I'm going to drop to 4/1/0/4 rifle on my main char and start building up fencer. Then decide if I'll keep it or not. God dropping frontiering is gonna suck

I have been very happy as a Master Ranger/Master Fencer and have no plans to ever drop it. I like being right up there in the action and the idea of being quick and wielding a sword has always appealed to me. Now if they would only give us fencers a good weapon to use as a Fencer or at least the ability to wield duel weapons. Rapier+dagger anyone?

Your friendly neighborhood Ranger,
