Thread: Ranger Psychology

I just noticed something interesting....In the thread about lessening the requirements for Ranger (a la BH), the main response was to improve the skills we have. Fair enough, and I agree whole-heartedly. BUT whatmany did say was that all of our skills improve upon Scout skills. But we all hate that we are 'Super Scouts.' I am generalizing, of course, but I just found that interesting. Interpret it how ever you see fit.

I think one problem we have is that not everyone has the same idea of what a ranger should be, and the more skill points you make as "required" the less chance you have or realizing *your* vision.
For example, we hear stuff about people wanting to be involved in GCW as sort of a stealthy combat scout. We hear others as wanting to be solitary explorers, and others wanting to be big expedition hunt leaders. Do we really think that all those different folks will be satisfied with any implementation of ranger that requires 220 or thereabouts skill points leaving only 30 left for you to customize your character to fit your vision?
Perhaps it really is too much to expect of one class.
Maybe ranger is like a box of chocolates... ![]()

A Ranger should have all the functionality of being a scout (since we are scouts) but with expanded horizons (excuse the pun). Currently Ranger just allows us to do scout things better. We want it to allow us to do scout things differently.
Most of the lines already do this. Camps for example, not only enhance our scout abilities (healing, supposedly animal repel if it worked), but give us extra things like crafting stations and the ability to buy faction stuff. Wayfaring ives us the "new" ability of camo. Tracking gives us an enhancement to our scout harvesting abilities and also a totally different skill, areatrack.
Unfortunately, though the idea is sound, the actual skills (except for areatrack) are just not useful ENOUGH to justify the points. Camo isnt even really an extra skill, just a new name for what we already have. Crafting stations... eh. Faction stuff.... possibly useful if you are interested in it? And traps have nothing new.
Take the professions based off of Master Marksman. There is no doubt that Commandos and Bounty Hunters skills and certs are a vast improvement over those of a Master Marksman. Bounty Hunters are even more Super Marksman then we are Super Scouts, but no one thinks of them that way because their abilities are such a vast improvement upon those of an Master Marksman.
I do not want to loose my Super Scout abilities, but I want my Ranger abilities to be such an improvement over them that no one can mistake me for a Super Scout.
EDIT: Because my Baaston accent was showing (what the heck is a Caamando??)

I think we all want to be Super Scouts... but we don't want to be ONLY Super Scouts.

Gah! Even on the forums!!! I swear if you call me "dude" I'm going to start ripping arms off! LOLOLOL
EDIT: /agree with Klif. Doctor is actually a much better analogy than mine because Doc does not require extra skill points the way the Commando and BH do.

This is almost precisely what I stated in my "Cover your eye/ears..." thread. What exactly do we get for 140 skill points?

- Master scout
- Master 1/3marksman tiers (pistol, rifle,carb)
- Master 1/4brawler tiers (unarmed, swords, 2hd swords, polearm)
Then within, ranger combat (ranged and melee) would be enhanced to a great degree in the npc/creature departmentusing new weapons and skills, making us the most powerfullest and effective creature hunters in the game.
The tiers in my ranger tree wouldn't just be enhanced versions of the scout tiers, they would be totally seperate tiers devoted to area of RANGER not just how we advance on scout abilities. In my view, to become a ranger you must be knowledgable in these 4 areas (learnt at scout) to progress into the hunter tree (my new name for ranger heh).
You must be knowledgable about trapping, wilderness survival (camping), exploration and hunting, but that doesnt mean my 4 tiers will devoted to each of these.
In my ranger treei would much rather see exploration, tracking and wilderness survial all thrown into on tier, perhaps called Tracking. Traps would be another seperate tier called Trapping. Hunting would be a new tier effectively with combat abilities (ranged/melee), weapon mods and certs. The last tree would be called Wilderness Experience. This tier will again be completly different to what we have currently.
Dammit here i go again, i felt the 'spark'!
Looks like ill have to write sumet on this in another post ![]()
Would anyone mind if i made up a rough brainstorm document of how i would like to see ranger tree set outtomorrow?
I dont want to seem like im saying this is what should happen so im better off asking first.
