Just so eveyone knows, in RLI was a wildlife lab tech 3 for florida fish and game for several years, and have worked in many circles involving wildlife as a career before becoming a high schoolteacher. Ranger was the obvious profession for me to gravitate to and I'm glad I'm here. The sad thing though is that after working for 2 months to get master ranger and at the same time met 3 other MR's that just got thier tag as well. We were having a great time hunting etc. All but one have moved on to do other things. They got tired of getting spammed to track As well as them taking "contracts" instead of just being put on a buy list as a supplier. So I would like to share some advice for new rangers who want to experiance this profession entirely.
- Do not take contracts from individuals: Contact BE's and docs and ask them to put you on a supplier list if they have one. If they don't they will usually tell you who to contact. The buyer will tell you what theyre buying and at what price usually in a formatted email. You hunt at your own pace and drop off without being nagged to fulfill a 100k tat avian order by Friday and have to hunt dwarf nunas for 18 hrs a day or get a bad reputatiuon.
- Make yourself unsearchable: In your character sheet where you can search for other players, you can turn off the abilty for others to search for you. If you find that you're constantly getting bombarded with tells asking you to track for people, turn it off with the checkbox.
- Take time to explore: I went out to the deserts of endor scouting around on my trusty brakeset last night and had a nice experiance ( never did find that gorax). Get back to your ranger roots and ride a mount every now and again. I especially do this if I do track for someone < friends only> making them ride with me. I've always got a comment of nastalgia from the player while we go, chatting , hanging out etc. Ride your mount through town if you must ride something, especially if you're wearing a tag.
- Meet your brethren: Always stop through camps if traveling or at least ride through. Make it a point to always say hello and ask assistance to new rangers or scouts. Our reputation is one that is laid back and friendly. Take part and enjoy the cool folks who share similar interests. Sometimes I'll set up a tech field base outside of coro in line with others trying to camp. I only do it for a few minutes to help attract people over to the area and it inspires the new guys/girls to keep on going.
- The most important thing if youre reading these forums! Do not be afraid of JB!! Hes considered.. ..." The salt " of the ranger forum.

I had a "ranger moment" the other day.
while setting up my "Ranger school" (Antarus Hunting and Fishing Academy), I decided I wanted a few fish on the wall. Planned to get one or two fish...
I ended up fishing for over two hours. So relaxing and really got me back to my early days of scouting.
and I had lots of fish on the wall.

Remember Odajja, the new Death Star needs a crew. See your local recruiter now. Tell 'em I sent ya, they will be happy to know I am still around, killing all their friends.
And good advice on never taking contracts. They only make you crazy. Instead, I found a tailor who will buy what I have, when I have it, for a low price. But what the hell, I am grinding anyhow, taking missions, so anything I get on top of mission pay is gravy. Same town is a guy who pays 10cpu for any herbie or domesticated, 3cpu for any other meats. LIke I said, gravy, free money. Not to say that when I hear of good meat, I don't go for it, but not on contract, and not Talusian avian.
And Master Rangers should always ask anyone with a Ranger tag on if they need any training. It's only polite. I know I hated to pay for training coming up, but had little choice - I think there were 3 Rangers on the server at that point.

i agree with the HTFB idea. Back when AH was a popular place, you dropped a HTFB, and 30 people came running over.

On the contracts. I have decided to go a different way. My new plan is to just hunt what is good after checking swgscrafts.
Then I sell or give 1/3 to guildmates for their production needs.
Sell 1/3 at current market value (usually just to someone advertising either on Trade forum or if I catch their barker in a starport.
The last 1/3 I am now setting aside for later sale in the lean times(like the last 2 weeks on Kettemoor were when there was NOTHING worth hunting for profit)
Otherwise I hangout with guildmates and help them grind or go practice droppig the big targets without being spotted. Sure the Malhloks<sp> on Dath are not super dangerous if your careful. But since I am only a 4/2/0/0 in Rifle it is still nice taking out 5 or 6 at a single spawn and never getting attacked.

me, i sell for very cheap to good friends. for example, a nice AS who's always on RIN is getting the great Dant wooly on Eclipse for 20cpu...where it's been selling for incredibly high prices.
a happy armorsmith is a charitable armorsmith. a happy doc is a buffy doc. a happy chef is a giving chef. etc.
i usually don't need much money because I defray all my costs by giving it away cheap.

The first one is HUGE. If you take a "contract" you're putting yourself to "work." And as we all know, working is less fun than playing. Never, ever, take a contract.
The second one is big too. It's even better if you just don't wear your Ranger title, especially around Coronet. All my guildmates know I'm a Ranger, all my other friends know I'm a Ranger. Some of the buyers know too. Better to be anything but a Ranger when you're walking through Coronet. I used to get the worst spam tells there. If you're on Sunrunner and you're looking for a Ranger, check for people wearing green camoflauge.
I think this might be server dependent. I never have any trouble with people sending me tells. At most, I get one or two tells every few hours. And most of those are friendly tells (not the 1337 speakers) from people who I wouldn't mind working for (even if I rarely do anything I'm asked to--it is a game, not a job). Eclipse is nice

On Ahazi I've only had one person try to sweet talk me into tracking for them for free. And I run through coronet with my tracker tag showing. Cant say I get alot of tells at all really.

I have to agree about Eclipse being a nice server. When on Tatt, yeah I get about a tell an hour sometimes more - the normal things like pirates, Mfs, and boars but no one there is ever pushy. They are polite and are willing to pay what you ask. If I am busy, I tell them so (sorry under contract)and they go away.
Yeah I had a jerk one time but one quick ignore and there was peace again. While I do agree with most things stated in this thread - I prefer to leave my Master Ranger tag up. Firstly, because I earned it. No macros, no uber gimmes and certainly no picnic. TKMs, Master Docs and the lot get the honor of displaying their badge of effort and so should we. I am sure master docs get hit with more than tells than even in our hayday of prepub10 rush.
Secondly and this is something I know from experience, I leave the tag up so that fellow rangers can look me up for training. Sadly, I bought all but 3 ranks of my training. My hours were odd at times and other times no one came up on searches withan all too quiet RIN channel. In my travels, I did a search on rangers everytime I landed on a planet. From there, I would give them a tell just to say hi or to ask for advice. We are a busy lot, true. Always under contract or off exploring often in hard to reach places but I have yet to run into a ranger who was anything less than cordial when approached under any condition. (I will make note that I have run into plenty of ex-rangers who were quite the pain in the arse - the prof to them was a means to an end). Every time I ran into a fellow ranger though, I put his or hername on my friends list in case I needed something or just so that I could see that we do exist.
A friend once told me when he saw my master ranger tag that he had seen more jedi than rangers. Again, an elusive lot we are due to our professions nature but still I believe that we should take steps to make our presence known. RIN is a good venue but there are times where it does not suffice. Novice Rangers want to know about us, the massive influx of new players due to the free trial thing want to know about us and we must be there to spread the word. At least ten people have come up to me and asked what it is like to be a ranger. These weren't clients but midlevelers who were about to make the next step into elite classes. They want to know what we know in our hearts and experience first hand about this way of life and if we hide our identities - they may never find out or go one believing that it is a dead profession that peopleUSED to take as a gimme on their way to uber jedi hood.
This isnt meant to be a rant - god I hate forums for that. I guess what I am trying to say is that perhaps its a good thing to show our titles off. To help other rangers train, to garner interest in our profession and thus with more people becomingrangers - perhaps the devs may stop ignoring us in their designs. Everyone wants to be a jedi it seems and look at the most changed part of the game...
Anyway, good tips all. Wrote them down as reminders. Thanks.
Oh and in case you do happen to be on the Eclipse server sometime - the names Malek. Would love to hunt with you.
