Thread: Why the crippling skills point costs for ranger ?

HI

Im sure this has been covered in the past.

But as a newish player of 8 weeks to the galaxy , i decided that scout and ranger looked like a good career. Backed up with combat medic should make for an awesome charecter.

SO i spoke to everyone i knew inour little guild and everyone said you can reach combat lvl 80 by being master in 2 elite proffesions and one base proffesion.

so by my reconing master scout is base , master ranger an elite master Cm the other elite.

BUt for some reason the skills point cost to master ranger is way above that of any other master proffesions.

i dont want to drop ranger as its taken 2 months of hard work to get it and i want to atleast get the badge .

What skills does ranger have which offer a significant advantage over other proffesionsto offset the high skills cost ? did the pre CU ranger have more skills which have been lost ?

as other posts have stated ranger is basically a super scout , if thats the case then surely a drop of skills point cost in the ranger box might allow us to take a second proffesion and reach mastery in it.

i know i should of done my sums before i started working on my chosen path, but when players with years of experiance in game tell you its possible i had no reason to doubt them.

In fact they have all gone off to do the sums and none of them can explain why the skill cost is so much higher than their proffesions.

You can reach a second mastery inby taking rifleman, carbine, pistols, fencer, swordsman, pikeman, bounty hunter, or creature handler. There may be more, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Those of us who stick with Ranger despite the amount of skill points it takes tend to be the ones who really love the profession. If you really love Ranger, then I would suggest one of the profs above. I am ranger/rifle and really enjoy the creature hunting and harvesting.

I am not familiar with the medic prof at all so I can't be much help to you here on that.

i think we got stuck with the high skill point requirement because everything in Scout has to do with everything in Ranger

for example....3 of the scout trees and 3 of the marksman trees had nothing at all to do with bounty hunter, so it was easy to revamp their requirements

same with the other ranged professions and etc....

they were trying to balance all combat professions (including skill points) but i think they would've had a hard time doing so with Ranger as we use all of our scout skills as a Ranger

the only way i see them dropping the Ranger skillpoint requirements is to revamp the scout profession first, and THEN work on the Ranger profession

since we are basically a "glorified scout" in order to revamp us, they first have to do something with scout

As Rangers, we use Mask Scent, Trapping, Camping, Harvesting, etc....

i would love to have some skill points free'd up, but honestly, i think Ranger is one of the best professions in the game (camouflage, traps, burst run efficiency, tracking, better mask scent, camps (for group healing - though camps really do need a LOT of work), etc...)

i love being a Ranger, despite the skill point requirement

i just got thinking....

if they wanted to make the Ranger pre-reqs only 2 lines of Scout....what 2 would you choose?

when i thought about this....i realized.....i'd keep Master Scout

the only way they could convince me to do otherwise would be to totally revamp the Scout AND Ranger professions, sorta like what i posted just a minute ago

(yeah, i'm bored lol - sorry for the spam)

In my opinion, pick up Carbine instead of CM. I've done this recently and I'm having loads of fun!!

BH is also a good option. You save on some skillpoints, and even if you never hunt a mark, it's a nicely balanced, versatile profession. I have it and I've only done one bounty, and it was an NPC one for kicks.

I for one love Ranger, I agree with what was written earlier in this post, that Ranger is a calling not a Profession. As to why it cost more skill points, or when a revamp will be done I dont know. I will never retire from being a Ranger, its too much fun!!!!

Like others have said, it's to do with the near-isomorphism of Ranger to Scout.

As things stand, Ranger is (on paper at least) merely a "super scout". The only real differences between scout and ranger are tracking and rescue. Everything else in ranger is simply a scaling up of scout abilities. That being the case, it is my belief that there is as much indecision between the devs as there is in the ranger community of what to do with ranger.

My best guess on what to do with Ranger is to split it into two professions, one being creature-centric and one being military/pvp-centric. Each profession would a different pair of scout lines. That way if you wanted to be the "Ultimate Ranger" you'd take both professions, and then the master scout box would be an optional extra if you wanted the extra skill mods.
