In a nutshell, as you progress up the ranger tree you get more ability but once at the top, you can:

track animals

track npc's

track players

you can search for one of the three above (or do one after the other if it floats your boat) and you do a sweep of 500m radius... so 1km from northern tip to southern tip / east to west with you at the centre. By the time you get to the top of the tree, you get both an idea of direction (south west, south etc) and distance.

Why do some people not like it - well, because it can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack and can be a lengthy process with no guarantee of reward - i.e. finding whatever you are looking for.It also tends to get associated with certain parts of SWG like the quests that go much quicker with a Ranger tracking for you - hero quests on Tat and so on, finding the bladeback boar etc- and with certain types of gamer (the uber d00ds) who tend to be the ones doing the quests.

I personally have mixed feelings. It's very rewarding if you do find what you are looking for, and rewarding to see and bask in the warm glow of other's appreciation for your efforts. However, it can be intensely frustrating if you track for ages and find nothing.

Well hello AngryBH and what an introduction from you. One thing tracking IV is good for is protecting guild jedi from Bounty Hunters. It works really well for that. I can track you for up to 500m before you get to the jedi. And be sitting there while they are force running away.

What do we do? Well we harvest more resources off critters than Scouts do, we are able to trap bigger critters than Scouts do, we make bigger camsp than Scouts do and we have a better form of .maskscent than Scouts have. Wow, that was a really depressing exercise right there . Our 1 unique skill is that we can track animals, NPCs and PCs. Please see this link for a crib notes guide to tracking.

Sure its nice when we can see them coming.

But its even nicer when the BH has a constantly updating waypoint to the jedi

The one time... ONE TIME.. we rangers were feared was because of our ability to track BH's. Sure they have their droids but I watched augustus over three planets and followed a fellow players jedi around making sure she had an escape. It even allowed you to make sure the starport was clear.

So in that respect we have an ability thats very useful. The smart BH's realized that the jedi had them in their friends list and vice versa and just did /findfriend

this reminds me of an experience I had a few months ago.

I am sitting in the hospital, second floor, in Theed. Overt and buffed. armored. Someone who shall remain nameless sends me a tell.

"hi, can you train me in ranger stuff plz?"

Me being nice, I direct him to myhideout so I don't have to expose myself to the jedi andfencers outside.

A few minutes later... *ding dong* ~you've reached floor two~

*POW!* 2 seconds later, Im dead on the floor with a nasty head gash.

I always thought that was a good trick. *chuckles*

Those riflemen.
