Thread: Why being a Ranger is fun and profitable

First off, as I sat listening to the CH dude whine about his lost rancors (yeah, that was fair) and the TK dude say it was not fair for him, an UNarmed person to lose his vibroknucles ( do you see the irony there?) I realized that being a Ranger is not a bad deal.

I run alone some, but I do like to GROUP. I contribute to that GROUP, camps, some healing skills, I check out the red aggros and see what kind of animal it is. No, I do not lead attacks, what armor?? Let the Squad Leader in his Uberarmor do that. I sit back, shoot at range, launch traps, and when the carnage is over, harvest my lil buns off. I am selling hides and bone and making a tidy profit...oh and I get a cut of the mission profits too... a deal for me.

Maybe you noticed I cap'd GROUP, It was for a reason... this is not a solo game (sorry Han). Soloing will get you dead real quick. Take on a herd of aggos and see. This is also not Evercrack, where you become Uberdude in two weeks, and go solo and kill throngs of monsters with your magical whatever. Instead, I have a Smuggler to slice my weapons for me (gratis, as he needs bone), a Medic to heal me and give me stims (bones, hide and stuff I forage), two Tailors who keep me looking sharp (hides), and an assortment of others who perform services, often for free as I square them away with stuff I find or harvest. I run missions with at least one other, usually three others, and I do the Ranger thing, I scout, camp, forage, harvest and help heal... and make some decent xp and laugh and have a good time.

Do I make a living...oh yeah, a good one... big cash in the bank, house, a couple of extractors... life is good. Can I do this alone... no way jose. I am constantly amazed at the lack of foresight and planning on the part of other players (oh wait, sorry, I forgot, they are former "crackies", they want it all and they want it now) I figure this is a long term game and the more you network, the better. Barter, trade, do favors...see the world, and if you get some xp, and cool stuff, so be it. Patience, have some, and good things will come to you.

Ya wanna be Uberdude, lord of all you see and then some... in two weeks nonetheless... go back to freaking Evercrack.

Before you leave tho, can I have your stuff??

Sorry for the rant... I feel better now...wonder if the server is back up??

I agree. This is the first MMORPGSLMND (whatever) that I have ever played (I was overseas during the EverCrack epidemic). I like it - a lot.

I haven't really groupsed all that much... just not into it right now... I am planning on buying a house. I too make a little money here and there. I wear a (helper) tag and I like to help out the newb's (and anyone else).

What server are you on?

JB,

So tell us, what do you contribute to your GROUP as a Ranger, that you couldn't do just as well as a Master Scout? That my friend is what 99% of the hellraising is all about, when you boil it down.

Grouping is not required to churn a Profit, I do rather well solo'ing all the time. Fun - well its subject to personal opinions, so what I may consider fun, may be boring as hell for someone else and vice versa.

"Maybe you noticed I cap'd GROUP, It was for a reason... this is not a solo game (sorry Han). Soloing will get you dead real quick."

What are you hunting? Ancient Rancors? I solo all the time, maybe I need to hunt harder mobs and leave the level 25 stuff alone.

I think DarxSteel has the right of it.

I think it is way easier to become a Master in SWG than to get to level 65 in EQ.

After climbing the Ranger skill tree I'm wondering what's next. There is really no reason to get any kind of XP at this point. Since my points are all used I'm forced to remove skills in one area to get others. EQ implemented AA's to get past this problem. I really think SWG needs a similar system to remain interesting.

Darx steel is right, yes you can have fun, heck I'm having a lot of fun and it sure do feel great when people say "nice camp" or when you use a phenc trap and your group can shoot at leisure cause the thing is so darn slow, but all this is scout stuff not ranger.

The problem is that to be a more efective "hunter" is way better to choose the ch line that the ranger line for hunting, or grouping. I'm not saying nerf ch, all I'm saying give us something that compliment that same group and make that group a lot more effective than a ranger can now.

And if you like to solo, Ranger IS NOT the way to go, you are way better off with CH or BH.

So as I said yes, I'm having fun but, I will like to also bring something to the table, something that a scout cannnot bring, something worth my precious skill points.

I've been spending most of my time playing the part of a Ranger, as opposed to limiting my role based on the apparent lack of skill defining attributes. It's fun for me to RP a little to compensate for all that this game is lacking content-wise, especially with all the problems in the individual professions.

However, I do solo a lot, and am quite successful at it. I've spread my skills out to accomodate a successful soloing Ranger character. I've been grouping more recently, though, since I've been taking out younger fighters to hunt harder mob's so that they can gain XP faster. Which kind of falls within what I personally envisioned as one of a rangers' characteristics.

There are times to solo and times to group.Group at the noob level until you are at the point you can take down a blue con without getting your butt handed to you.

Then you solo until you get a title of Master (when xp is desperate and grouping to kill blue's and whites isn't all that great) taking on the OCCASIONAL yellow and red.

At that point you need to group because trying to fill out the advanced trees by doing nothing but blues, whites and occasional yellow's and reds will take FOREVER.

I grouped until I could afford a scout blaster. I've soloed my way up to master marksman and master scout. I'm about to get novice carabineer and will need to start grouping again once I start up the path of carabineer and ranger (while dumping my hard earned marksman skills along the way. I was a victim of poor character development planning which was caused by having commandos gimped for so long. . . the class I wanted to play).

So there is a place for some soloing. But only if you don't want to get out and SEE the galaxy. I've pretty much been confined to corellia, tatooine and a little bit of talus. Soloing Lok, Dath, Endor and Yavin. . . even I'm not that stupid. I also see the irony of people whining about Dath being too hard to solo since the Baz Nitch exploit was fixed. . . oh those poor poor novice marksman who can't uber solo dath anymore whatever shall they do.

Oh yeah I also see the irony of the Unarmed brawler whining about not being able to use his vibro knuckles.

Well I guess I am stupid, because I have and will again solo on Dath and Yavin. Solo'ing is available to those that want to accomplish such task - through patience, tactics, room, and desire to do so - (without pets). Its a trial and error process, but in the end the reward is twice as sweet. Play like you want/enjoy to play but refrain from making such blunt statements, because my experiences in SWGhave proven Solo'ing to be not only valid, but also profitable.

Talk about profitable....

Once your master scout and have an elite combat line you should be able to solo just about anything on Tatooine. It will take some brains and tactics but it's doable. Don't be afraid to run if the entire mob comes at you, but then you can string them out with kiting too if needed.

Go there and solo banthas, especially rogue banthas. Rogue banthas have no matriarchs and you can beat the crap out of one while the other just breathes down your back. Then you beat the crap out of him too.

One phecnacine, two glow wires, and the beast almost dies on its own.

The skins you get will bring you bea coup top credit.

Four- Sixhours of bantha hunting brings you about 15k in hides, and then there's the mission rewards.

Dune lizard hides are also over 900 quality which sells well.

Sometimes it's fun to solo in the game. But I think it's more fun in a good party.

Don't get me wrong, stupid people will get you killed real quick. Forget Rancors or Krayts, the deadliest thing in the Galaxy is a newbie on Dathmoir.

Couple nights ago on Dath we clean a baz nitch lair in a party of 9 people I just met. Then we go to thump the lair to draw out more. Newbie shoots wrong lair. Then keeps shooting and shooting. So we had about 10 Baz Nitches on 9 people. Three people survived - and one was the newbie!

So me, a cool master creature handler, and the newbie had a talk. He couldn't shoot anything we didn't authorize.

After that the three of us took out six lairs with no casualties no slayings. We were able to communicate and use teamwork.

Large groups are never in the same boat and newbies can kill you quick.
