Thread: Why a Ranger? Nothing going for it.
Hi,
Just to start off I love playing Rangers. In EverQuest, Baulder's Gate ect ect I played a Ranger. Now my question is, why wouldyou want to become aRanger in this game?Let's just pretend for a minute that the Ranger class isn'tbroken and all skills workto perfection. Now why would you want o become a Ranger? I have looked at the skill tree and it doesn't look good at all. What do Rangers have going for them? They don;t get any combat skills at all, meaning if you were going to Master Ranger you have to Master a combat skill too, not to metion mastering the Scout skill. It just looks like a Ranger is an upgraded Scout. But if there is anyreason to play a Ranger please please let me know. Also what good is trapping animals?
Thanks
A huge misconception with traps is what they do. They are DEBUFFS basically. It seems to be the scout/ranger little secret. I have had folks tell me I am exploiting, some have said WOW how do you do that! Well. . they are traps. They don't trap animals. In fact I dont know of one trap that traps an animal to take home. (Creature handlers do I guess but not scouts).
Traps in a nutshell are your debuffs. Snare, Root, Defense Debuffs, Attack Debuffs... They do WONDERS in many cases.
Legulad,
It sounds like you think SWG uses a Class system and not a skill/class hybrid system. your character can be a master ranger/master rifleman/surveyor or a master ranger/master swordsman/pistoler, the options are enlist.
So yes Rangers don't have combat functions, but they do have skills that help in combat. in other MMORPG terms forage will get you buffs and traps will de-buff animals but not humaniods. camps will heal most wounds, and can runfaster then non-rangers.I would not call that nothing!

Warning! Warning! Apples and Oranges Comparison in Progress!! ![]()
OK, anyway, never compare one profession's skill boxes with another profession's skill boxes if they do not use the same type of experience points. In this case we're talking Scouting experience points vs Creature Handling experience points. They DO NOT compare straight across because they are earned at different rates.
Btw, this post was by no means meant to denigrate anyone's playstyle, so please don't take it that way. Everyone of course is entitled to their own playstyle.

Before you guys scream for tons of stuff for Rangers, try to remember you are getting what you pay for here. The biggest investment in this game is not in the skill points, but the brutal grinding xp. Just to clarify!
When you take down a big creature it may give you say 600-800 xp in your chosen combat profession, but only 180 scouting xp. Also a CH gets anywhere from 400-800 CHxp per tame.
That is why the ranger skills take much less xp. Period, its called balance.
Why do I play a Ranger? Cause I want to. I don't care about combat benefits, pvp advantages, etc etc etc. I just think the ranger class sounds like fun to play.
But that's just me. I think too many people pick their class based on what's gonna be uber and ultra powerful. I pick what I think would be fun.
I agree, in EQ and other games ranger is defined as something very differnt then it is in SWG. I never, EVER played a ranger in those games because it didn't seem fun. But i like the way Sony made them and thats why I play them
