I like healing my wounds on the road and having a safe spot to rest in.

I like foraging for my own food.

I like using my traps to help down gigantic prey (Needs some work).

I like being able to conceal myself while running through areas swarming with vicious creatures (Non-vicious creatures need to stop breaking this).

I like being able to harvest more organic materials than anyone else.

And I am very much looking forward to the high tech field base. I will get there someday. Our class needs some work, but these are the things I like / look forward to.

Imho Ranger is about nature, not about combat. Ok, hunting is combat, Rangers get Creature-to hit-bonus for that matter (well, and traps ). Right now I'm only considering going this path so I don't know if the actual to-hit-bonus is high enough, but it is the only combat related thing a Ranger should get imho. Everything else should be Marksman related.

It appears to be one of the most underpowered professions in the game (second, perhaps, to Chef).

Wynnn

That was very stupid to say cause u obviously dont know anything about chef the chef is a ver highpowered class did u know there foods cause too greatly reduce any there damage in combat hell chefs are the ultimate weapon so actuall chef it almost at the top of benefits and are almost too powerfull for comfort on the game

To answer the original question, there really is no reason to be a Ranger. It appears to be one of the most underpowered professions in the game (second, perhaps, to Chef). Sure, the XP may be easy to earn, but it uses up skill points that could be spent in other professions that actually do provide additional abilities with some use. Heck, at least Chefs get to make new stuff.

A ranger/chef combo would be pretty uber actually. I just have domestic arts 2 for the mana regen food. I can imagine what a master chef can make. Coupled with the major harvesting from being a ranger, they would be the super buffers. EQ Shamans/Chanters

Please don't call others stupid when you yourself have no idea what you are talking about. I will insinuate from your lack of knowledge that you've never played a Chef before, hence you have no right judging other people's opinion on that matter. I will tell you one thing though, that Chefsare broken, and not for the good either. Their skill trees are really unbalanced, and some important ingredients for their recipes do not even exist. If Chefs are the "ultimate weapon" as you say, how come there areso few Chefs on any galaxy compared to, say, Armorsmiths or Weaponsmiths? Heck, I'll even go as far as saying that Chefs aresome of the most underused professions in the game, next to Rangers and Image Designers.

Chefs are overlooked, underused, and underestimated. They aren't the ultimate weapon, but they can stand on their own two feet assuming there is someone with the brains and money to spend on their food. Few people know what food even does. Chefs and food can help you greatly. The chefs major problem at the moment is that everyone gets along just fine without them and therefore make little to no business. No need = no demand.

You could say the same for rangers. They don't have any skill that anyone needs because a scout can match most of their skills. The large number of BHs with those skills just adds to it. I personally wouldn't mind seeing some more traps to give us a sort of debuffing role in groups.

I have to agree with Pyradius. Currently, I am a Scout 40% / Artisan 35% / marksman 25%. I also have a little entertainer thrown in for music in camp. I have a medical R5 droid for healing in camp.

So, after gretting out of a bad situation with some greater shawpaws (sp?) outside of Theed, I can:

1. Set up a camp in the middle of nowhere

2. Group my med droid and get healed (speeds Survival xp)

3. Survey for and sample resources (again - speeds xp)

4. Craft traps for the next excursion (or bone armour, or a muzzle, or whatever)(crafting = xp)

5. Meet and talk to folks from all over the world (I'm not antisocial!)

I am pretty self sufficiant. I get a ton of survival xp every day that I play.

I really haven't decided what I'm going to do as far as a secondary preofession, but ranger looks pretty good! I may pick up armoursmith or weaponsmith so I can make my own stuff, too. Who knows?

If ranger isas fun as scout is, I think I will enjoy it.

The problem with the Ranger class right now is that it doesn't offer much in the way of a significant advancement over the Scout Proffession. Lets use another Elite proffession for example, the Pistoleer. In the Marksman tree you earn some nice pistol skills and ranged support stuff. Then you get into the Pistoleer proffession and a larger array of moves/enhancements opens up for you.

The Ranger, alternatively, only gets 1 new skill, 3 camp types, and 2 area of effect traps. Everything else is just bonuses stats to what you learned as a scout. Even with the little you get, outside of Rescue the Ranger does not learn anything new. Instead, they just get a little better at the stuff they could already do as a scout. While the pistoleer gets better, they also learn a variety of attacks that have different effects/advantages.

The main problem here is, yes the Ranger is supposed tobe an advanced Scout, but they don't have enough uniqueness or advanced feel to them for most people who figure all they'll ever need is scouting.

What the ranger needs to complete it is a couplemore new skills that are either advanced variations of scout abilities or somewhat unique. Conceal needs to be brought back from beta where it was basically a mask scent 2 for NPCs. Some more area of effect traps need to be brought in....like a "confuse" trap that made creatures aggro against each other. Now *that* is an area of effect trap I'd use all the time. And we need some new stuff like the tracking thats been discussed or the like.

All this is also not taking into effect that the item thats the biggest benefit for Rangers, its camps, aren't even working properly at the moment heh. Now don't get me wrong, I love being a Ranger, but right now it is focused too much on just bonusing scout abilities instead of bonusing and adding new unique stuff like all the other elite proffessions do. It doesn't make the Ranger a bad proffession, it just makes it less incentive wise than others.

Nicely said SolrFlare.

Maybe if they moved some of the actions in scout to ranger since scout is one of, if not the, most used professions. It doesn't really make rangers something to say "wow" about.

Im really hoping the additional bonuses to hit creatures will help alot in fighting enemy creature handlers. Im going for Rifleman/Ranger and im seeing numerous creature handlers out there right now, someone will have to keep them in check. I believe the ranger is perfect for this. And it will further the effectiveness of the scouts traps too, so that little lep dart will take off even more mind per hit, so I can just dart then follow up with a head/mind shot and boom, dead pet and fleeing creature handler. (I know I wont get EXP for this as it is a pet, but its all for the Empire in this case, not me, so thats okay)

This is all theory of course.

The way I see it, I have pistol specialist, rifle specialist, and I'm a novice ranger.

Now, lets say you have a friend who wants to go somewhere, but that place just happens to be completely out in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by large powerful mobs. The jedi temple on Dantooine for example...

Now, you can trek out there, hunt the creatures, scare creatures away if you're not in the mood for a fight, make bases if you and your group need to heal, hide yourself from powerful mobs if you need to, and extract some of the rarest resources in the galaxy (Dantooine animal bone used in Advanced armor for example).

I'm the kinda person that likes to go out and explore. I want to see the rebel base on Dantooine, explore some of the dungeons, go see places and live out on my own. To me, the ranger is the perfect profession to do this. I can also pick up pistoleer or rifleman. With the creature-to-hit bonuses, I'd be able to take down some of the more powerful creatures in a few swift shots.

That sounds like major fun for me.
