Thread: The Outdoorsman...
Out FREAKING standing NRaas. I love all of it, except maybe the camp stuff. The modular camps are neat and all, but as I said in your thread about it, I don't want to do all that detailed crafting. I'm a ranger, I want to throw up a camp for a few features. I don't want to be a crafter. I like the ideas along the lines of what the alternate camping thing is.
I like the /hide command, first time i have heard of it. I envision a squad of overt rangers, sitting outside there base /hiding. The army comes in to attack, and rangers pop up behind them.
So lets hope at least some of it gets done.I approve for it as you have(dont care forcamps thing but if I get outvoted oh well I'll live)
I'm reading through this thing as I write, so bear with me. I still have one big comment on the to-hit thing. What good is a to-hit bonus when I'm on Dathomir by myself travelling to my destination? A bonus in combat is nifty, but not when I don't WANT to do combat, but want to be a shadow from the creatures. We simply need a potent means to conceal ourselves, and maskscent doesn't do the trick usually. As a Master Ranger with no bio-clothing, I am detected 70% of the time by DISEASED VRELTS! on corellia, and about 25% of the time by random Dathomir creatures, 100% of the time by Rancors unless I go prone.
A master ranger should be more skilled in concealment from wild creatures when he's just passing through the area. I don't expect no creatures at all to detect me when I'm running, but 100% by rancors at 65m is terrible. So instead of maskscent, I sometimes use /conceal, because that decreases the 100% range to 50m or so for a Rancor. Conclusion: either up the usefulness of maskscent so that we can actually USE it on high end planets or keep /conceal for those purposes. I think we all agree that a master Ranger needs a potent way of concealment, so to take that away would be bad.
The whole part about the /hide command has to do with this, but it reads as if that's something rather temporary for use in direct situations, not as something to use for 30 mins when travelling around.
Critical Hit: 2x damage and 4x at master, on default attacks only. Great... if you don't use any specials. e.g. a TKM with any will to live will keep a critter knocked down at all times possible, giving him a 2x modifier already. Using Unarmedhit2/3 while it's knocked down will do 3K damage to a creature. Using a 4x default attack will do half of that. So unless it stacks with the knockdown mod, it's useless for a TKM. I don't know about other combat professions, but it's just an example to show one possible situation.
moving on..
evacuation shuttle? Not to pooh the party, but who carries a ship in their back pocket? The fact that we can carry 59 large cabinets and a land speeder already annoys realism to no end, but providing a sort of shuttle port is hardly acceptable. Same goes for the Garage IMHO.
I realise these points may have been mentioned before, but in order to really be 'by the community', an extra perspective can't hurt ![]()
"you could give a 2 second grace period to where once it fell asleep your group could then peace. any attack that landed in those 2 seconds would not dmg the creature "
Eh... I like the idea of having to know how to use the item, rather than having the game do all the work. ![]()
I think the creature would have to peace for itself and its attackers, because it would be too hard to coordinate such a move with autofire. One persons weapon has to just accidently autofire once and it will ruin the whole trap... I don't think it should be that way, with lag and all involved.
Should this effect be instantanious, or should it take the creature a period of time to finally drop? While it's getting woozier should it's attacks and defenses weaken untill it's finally a sleep and everyone is peaced?
I'm sorry.. I always have to try and find some offensive bonuses to everything
Just the way I think I guess.
"A bonus in combat is nifty, but not when I don't WANT to do combat, but want to be a shadow from the creatures."
So you want a better version of/maskscent... Many Rangers are looking for something more spectacular however, something to differentiate us from the Super Scout image.
"2x damage and 4x at master, on default attacks only."
You don't consider anything else to be imbalancing, considering the huge damage of some of the higher level special attacks?
I agree that the bonus on the auto-attack may not be enough to make the skill worthwhile. Perhaps a smaller multiplier applied to all forms of attack would be better?
"evacuation shuttle? Not to pooh the party, but who carries a ship in their back pocket?"
We are not carrying the shuttle itself... Only the landing strip and beacon for the shuttle to find us. ![]()
that's what I forgot, an addition to the CH part of Ranger. I was gonna suggest an extra Max Level Of Pets, but it's already in there. Another possibility to consider is the ability to tame adult creatures given to Master Rangers who are Master Creature Handlers as well. In general this will not change the balance of the game due to the max level of pets thing, and not having to wait for your pet to grow up is not a very big inbalance either, especially considering the HAM of creatures found in the wild is often lower then an adult pet of the same kind. A waiting time could be implemented because the Ranger must first form a bond with his pet before they can fully rely on each other. The benefit of this ability would be that a Master CH / Ranger is the only one who can tame a gurrcat, or a gurreck forest stalker, or a you name it. There are plenty of creatures that don't spawn babies, and this ability would give the Master Ranger / CH something to show for himself, and the fun of having a truely unique pet. (And can I suggest giving mea Krayt Dragon as a pet?
)
A possible disadvantage connected to the ability if something's unbalanced would be that these bonds of friendship with an adult creature only apply to the Ranger that made the bond. Tamed adults under level 35 might be sold to other people if they've learned the Friend and Transfer command and have been through the period of bonding with the Ranger. But above level 35, a tamed adult will not give up the bond made with the Ranger and cannot be transferred permanently to another player.
A way to make it more interesting would be things that break the bond. If the Ranger CH allows his tamed adult pet to die too often or too quickly without even trying to heal it, the pet might decide to abandon the player.
Any comments on this proposal are welcome.
"I think the creature would have to peace for itself and its attackers, because it would be too hard to coordinate such a move with autofire."
Sounds like the Squad Leader "Retreat" ability to me, except with a little more effort involved.![]()
Well, if we want to get on the subject on what we can and cannot carry in our "back pocket" then I think it's going to get ugly.
Like I said, I dont mind conceal being removed, as long as mask scent is upgraded for Rangers to take it's place. If conceal is removed, I will not be able to be the shadow that the Vision says we are. Maskscent is simply too weak against the higher level creatures and against specific critters like diseased vrelts to be the sole concealment to rely on.

a stacking 1.5 damage modifier (2 at Master)on ALL attacks for 5 seconds rather then 2x/4x for 15 for default attacks sounds fair to me, though those numbers can use some tweaking naturally. That way a TKM in that situation will actually benefit from using the ability. Instead of doing 1.5K or 3K if it stacks with knockdown, you can do 4.5K damage on a knocked down creature with your critical strike, and after that you could either just barely fit in another unarmedhit3 for another high damage and have them stand up again, or you could warcry or dizzy your opponent instead to keep them pinned down longer. That's another trade-off you have to make, and trade-offs are what gives balance.

not a ship but a beacon? good point. Though the trade-off there would be that it'll take the distances to the nearest city in Km as the time in minutes you have to wait for the shuttle to get to where you are. How's that?
Well I have been with the game since the beginning. TK was my profession of choice, but I have found myself dabbling in alot of others. You will have to bear with me for this is my first post ever, even though Ifrequent these boards often.
Recently I decided to go on my quest for the elusive FS slot, my holocron told my Ranger. So I came browsing to your board to explore all the wonderful new skills I will have when completing my quest.
I must say I was taken back by your Correspondant, if every profession presented there dream in such a fluent and humble matter perhaps alot more would get done. Instead all I see from others is whinning and demands. I have read many profession boards, and by far this is the most civil and organized.
I look forward to joining your ranks, even if for a short while.
