Why would we have to strip out one of our trees? We already have Wayfaring which gives us camo kits and conceal. Just add this functionality to that line. Perhaps rename it "Infiltration". I know trapping is next to useless right now, but there are many, many ideas on how to improve it (just see the Outdoorsman proposal for an example of some cool and unique trap ideas the Ranger community has come up with).

If your argument is that the devs might want us to have 2 lines focused on stealth to get invisibility (i.e. Ranger must have Wayfaring AND Infiltration to be able to hide on radar), then I'm going to have to disagree. Make the Ranger skill tree: Master Ranger, Infiltration/Wayfaring line, Frontiering line, Tracking line, Trapping line, Novice Ranger. Then add the 'hide on radar' or 'complete pvp invisibility' skill to the Infiltration/Wayfaring line or to Master Ranger.

Just my opinion of course, but I fail to see why we should give up a potentially satisfying and unique line (Trapping) in order to gain concealment skills that should be covered by our current Wayfaring line.

So what's wrong with putting the "new" /conceal feature in say.... maybe, the skill tree the "old" feature was in?

We're supposed to get this profession improved, not ripped apart. Traps could be one very distinctive ability for rangers, if it wasn't for the fact that currently, they are nothing but slow specials that force you to stand still.

If you could be invisible to players in this particular game environment (which is technologically different from DAoC which does have a similar type of stealth skill), you would be vulnerable to a lot of really mean, jerky stuff. Hypothetically speaking, you might get someone who figures out that if they use some stealth skill and hide over covert detectors, that they could catch people in an unfair trap. Or they might go invis and wait for you to be in a dungeon or something and then train a high level creature on you. There is no way to know what would happen. Im not saying its never going to happen, just that there are more important things to do first.

I'll start off by saying I'm not a ranger. Secondly while I can see some imbalances with being invisible I also know that in order to attack a player they must have joined a faction. If some of the imbalances are worked out I don't really have a problem with someone going "invis" waiting over a covert faction scanner for unwary people of the opposite faction, this is a Galatic Civil War after all, by joining a faction your opening yourself to PvP, when your covert you just have less of a chance of being dragged into a fight that you don't want to be involved in BUT your still part of a faction.

I agree.. This isn't like (pre-Trammel) UO where every time you walk out of town, you have to worry about invisible PKs waiting to do you in with a Corp Por or two. If someone attacks you, anywhere, it's because you tacitly (by joining a faction as a Covert) or explicitly agreed to PvP (by joining a warring PA, being an Overt Faction Member, or accepting/initiating a duel). No one can grief-kill you without at least that consent. Assuming this consent is present (which it is) someone stealthing on you and attacking is no different than a squad of Imperials camping the rebel recruiter, or busting into a cantina with guns blazing.

I think that the invisibility described in the Outdoorsman proposal under the /hide skill is perfect; it has self-imposed limits, and has limited capacity as a possible offensive ability. I *would* like to see a small addition, though.. Movement. Limit it to prone (of course) movement, but with the additional limit that it's prone speed as though you did not have Terrain Negotiation while hidden. Also, it would check whenever you entered any hostile (player or NPC) area of detection, and have a chance of revealing you. If you are revealed in this manner while using /hide, you are subject to the same disorientation pause as if you voluntarily dropped /hide. This would make moving a calculated risk; Do you move to a position of better advantage and risk being detected, or stay put and remain safe?

There is a proposal in the SotP (the new one, availablevia my signature) for such a beast.

You guys are right! The inflitration skills should be in wayfaring but I originally said that it should replace Ranger trapping as that whole tree is worthless anyway. I see your point now. We need to either drastically improve Trapping such as what N'raas is proposing, or get ANOTHER skill set in its place and leave the new infiltration skills in Wayfaring where it belongs.

I respectfully ask that posters don't bump threads multiple times in a row.

Thanks

I'm sorry N'Raas if my bumping this up to make sure other Rangers and Devs can see this is upsetting, but this issue is important to a lot of us and that's the only way to keep it alive. For those people that don't want to read it or agree with it, they are more than welcome not to click on it. I'm not sure if I have the ability to sticky this like all of your posts. If I can, then I will be happy to quit bumping this.

"but this issue is important to a lot of us and that's the only way to keep it alive."

If the issue is important enough to the community, the thread will remain on the main page on its own, without having to manually bump it.

I think however, everyone has said what they wanted on the subject, and that is why it has died out.

When something new arises (such as a proclamation from the developers on the subject), we can start a new thread to discuss the issue anew.
