I hate to through cold water on all this... but...

One of myworries is that gap between the CB and our revamp. In that gap it sounds like all rangers will be out of business for a time... unless they mean for us, forever, to hire fighters to help us kill things. We will be extinct then, as even I cannot justify gimping myself by keeping Master Ranger and spending hours to get a few paltry units of hide and much cloning. I'm hoping that in the "sandbox" we can convince them to give us something anyway, even though they stated it will not happen. I was a Rifleman back in the days of AP0 T21's and 250% damage. I would not like to go back to those days. I don't have the skill points to compensate, and I would have to return to Master Scout only... if even that.

You could see the death of all freelance hunters and/or prices far beyond 250 Cr/U. It would also mean the death of non-PA alligned crafters. I did not do EQ because to do anything of significance there, you had to join a PA. If they mess this up too much I might never go back to the ground game

I will be watching just how they pull this off. Very closely.

No Pressure

I know where you are coming from and we probly wont agree with this either but i believe if a character is designed to be weak, he/she SHOULD be weak. For example if you take rifleman as a profession, you should be weak to melee hits (bring back 2.5x melee mod) and because of this you shouldnt get the same bonuses as a tk would for using armour.

A rifleman should forfieght defense for power if they are into becoming super powerfull, doing this would limit their ability to takedamage from large creatures and npcs etc however would enable them to dish out damage much more effectively. However if a rifleman wanted more defenses he/she would simply invest more points into toughness which would be taken from power making a more defensive rifleman with less offensive power than an all out power orientated rifleman.

It would be completely up to the play how much defense values they give thereselves. Each profession would give a certain amount of 'base' mods to defense and then on top of that you add your own allotted points in whatever area you want. So perhaps a rifleman will always have more power values than a tk even if the tk invests all the points into power. This just shows that tk isnt designed to be a primary damage giver, its designed to be both tank and power, but would still allow a player to customise the character to be an offensive/defensive/hybrid set up depending on how they want.

There is alot of ways to improve or change this idea because its new and not even planned. It doesnt tie into different current systems so you can have massive changes without impacting existing systems. The main points though is that it makes armour dependant on the character using it, allows for a much more diverse collection of players, allows the player tohave a massive amount of variationwithin a single profession by selecting their stats differently. Giving a player the choice to go offense/defense/mix is good in my eyes because you are forced to pick one or the other, not have both or forced into having one specific class trait, which i think is wrong.

Thats exactly what my main fear is; because we are so heavily involved in combat we wont be able to hunt. The part i am getting at though is the overall picture of the revamp, not just how it will effect rangers. Obviously within the ideas each profession would gets its own bonus, rangers would obviously get their own big bumps which im sure will show up when we hit the sandbox and start screaming at the top of our voices.

I cant see how rangerswont get additions within the combat balance personally, because we are involved with is so heavily. Like you said if nothing gets done in regards to rangers i can see rangers being very gimped. However allowing everyone to hunt the big things solo and not just rangers is the wrong way to go about it. But then the whole CB -> Ranger revamp thing comes into play and how long the gap will be

I have alot of fears but also alot of confidense we can make a good push in the sandbox

Always the optimist

The sandbox is the test server where the correspondents plus 5 players picked by each correspondent will be testing the combat revamp

Hehe ok ill try my hardest to be the pesimist

The sandbox is a private and isolated server where the devs, the correspondents and 5 members from each community will go and test, give feedback, give suggestions and ultimatly play the combat revamp changes before they hit live. There will be lots of bug finding, testing various things and work to be put in aswel as alot of writing according to calc.

The reason why we mention it is that we hope to be able to talk to the devs and actually SHOW them that rangers are severly lacking and in most probability will be hit very negativly by the combat balance unless we get some updates ourselves whilst IN the sandbox. Having time and chats with the devs whilst playing/testing will surly help alot in getting our points across.

Ah well, I hope calc picks Owen and I since we have such divergent views. Good opportunity for one of us to say "i told you so" and for the other to eat their words

lol we arnt making statementsso there cant beany i told you so's hehe

If you mean in regards to the CB being crap and worthless or being great then........... Owen = Winner

Nah im only messing mate, there will be no eating of words because i think we are both hoping for it to be a success and both wanting to push ranger forward in many ways. We are very similar apart from the fact you are a pesimistic ranger and im an optimistic ranger although this will change if we realy do suck after cb hehe

Now our ideas on how ranger should be are completely seperate to what this discussion has been about, if we are talking about how we would like to see ranger as a profession and its various roles then we need to start again and book a day off to post hehe

NO

NEVER
NOT EVER

You MUST understand the TOTAL gimpage that entales. The way the servers and lag works on the internet that will not fly. If buffs are reduced that is even more important. Back in those days Crazed Durni hit me for 400+ points. All RIfleman would never make it (even in a group) trying to take an Albatross (64m range AoE's... ya, that will be a tactical NIGHTMARE).

We already have problems with status effects, get hit more often, ect. Adding that as well is too much and I would out of business. Casual successes are no match to production hunting, I could handle this casually but would put production hunting out if my reach. I would have to switch to a defensive template, one that might take me longer for each one but keeps me out of the cloaning center.

lol ya AOE would suck big time.

However the only negative i hated when it was in was the teleport bug. I had no problems in avoiding hits if everything went well but 9 out of 10 times the thing would warp to me and bang! lights out.

Otherwise i did find it an attractive thing to have but that was only because i could use dart and ad-mesh hehe

Its probably not the best time for it to make a reapearancei admit, but apart from the teleport but i like it Kept me on my toes and balanced out the power hehe

Firstly, let me start off by saying that its obvious that we all (in general) want the same thing.

1: fast paced and exciting gameplay

2: challenges in combat with corresponding rewards

3: ranger skills that directly translate into hunting success, survival and usefulness.

4: varied, useful and powerful attacks during combat

5: introduction of strategy and tactics

6: varied combat professions with unique skills, advantages, disadvantages and purposes

Right now, we all push the same buttons... be it strafeshot, unarmed hit 3, or whatever, the main differences right now in the survivability of our hunters in both pvp and pve is the quality of buffs/ quality of weapons/ quality of armor.

Those with the highest rating of each generally win (assuming similar skill levels)

When im buffed and armored vs. a kimogila, i take out my Vibro Lance, (intim/ bleed1, bleed2, leghit3... rinse repeat) until the critter is dead. I know that i will win, because i have superior armor, and superior buffs, and i know that the critters less resist to electricity as opposed to kinetic will make my hits count.

Right now, the combat system is a fancy button mashing game, and thats really about it (only when buffed) unbuffed, the game still retains strategy, skill and the like.

I am cautiously optimistic about the CB, im not expecting to be amazed, yet i am excited about the intentions of the devs to make tactics, strategy and skill a much bigger part of the combat system. Whether or not those intentions are met, is ultimately up to a few variables, the testers, time and the combat system itself.

To debate a nebulous system that we dont know much about yet (other than a few basics), is ultimately fruitless. (however, as more info becomes available, essential)

My personal opinion is to focus on how rangers can add to the combat abilities, how having ranger skills will make us better hunters, and start formulating ideas and scenarios in which what we have would be usefull as new info comes out.

with respect.
