I think they've had more of an issue with the Unarmed branch more than the Pistols branch; the smuggler specials can be used with pistols, but I'm less certain they're usable with unarmed attacks.

Is it just me or is this debate getting repetitive? I keep seeing the same arguments for pistols, carbines, rifles, and "ninja's".

Well it is a little bit, but I think it's because it's a fairly clear cut case, although some people keep coming up with comments along the line of "shut up and just be happy you're getting any attention", then the rest of us reitterate the straight forward reasons for the problems with have with the proposals.

The real debate needs to forget talking about the carbine pre-requisits (it's a no brainer that it's a bad idea), and need to concentrate on whether we incorporate melee rangers by staying elite, or we slide towards ranged combat.

I didn't use buffs or uber armour, so why did the combat revamp have to spoil my game?

Here's currently what I think the Developers are doing/planning.

Okay, to a large extent the Ranger is a foil to the Smuggler. Yes, the "stealable items" Rangers are supposed to "steal" are from Smugglers only (or so goes the rumor) and they are largely tied to the planned Smuggler content, ie. - mission items for Smugglers.

Smugglers are pigeon-holed into the Pistoleer profession for the most part. Smuggler/Pistoleer compliment eachother perfectly as a Debuffer/Crowd Control template.

I see that Rangers will be pigeon-holed into Carbineer. Carbines are largely AoE with one of the best snares of the game, Improved Crippling Shot. I imagine that the Developers plan on Ranger traps to compliment these Carbineer abilities in some way.

Now, if you happen to want to keep your template "intact" than it does NOT mean that you have to take up Carbines IV. In fact, all you have to do is DROP Ranger and KEEP Master Scout.

So in effect, if you want all your old Ranger abilities, and you used to use a Rifle - well, now you have an additional 63 skill points to play with. Be a Master Scout + Master Rifleman. You are a Pre-Revamp Master Ranger + Master Rifleman.

The *key* is to disassociate Ranger from Scout. Ranger is already, unless everything for the Revamp to date gets thrown out, NOT a Scout Elite. Repeat, Ranger is NOT a Scout Elite. No more than Bounty Hunter is. Get it?

So all-in-all, I change my position. Carbineer is fine, I guess. Just as much as Pistoleer is for Smuggler.

::shrug::

(As a complete aside, looking at the way things are going now, I don't doubt if we see new prerequisites for both Commando and Smuggler when their Revamps go in. I think the Brawler prerequisites will be switched to Scout. Namely, Trapping IV (Commando) and Survival IV (Smuggler) - but just my two cents. I hope this happens. Of course not everyone would like it, but it does make templates more balanced and more interesting, if with a wee bit of focus on ranged over melee. But that's happening anyway, came with the CU and probably not going away.)
