Thread: Something rather sad...
You don't need to go to another profession to make money. I have been a Master Ranger for quite sometimewith some skills in ch and pistoleer. I have 3.5 million in my bank and most of it I acquired from my ranger skills. Just last week our server had wooly hide that was 995 oq 865 sr. I collected 40k in about a week playing casually. I sold this wooly hide to an armorsmith at 50 cpu.
I normally don't get 50 cpu on my harvests but getting over 20 cpu is fairly easy with harvests that have over 900 in the right stats. You need to know your buyers and what they need. As well as know your wildlife, your a ranger after all. I get tells all the time asking for various harvests. On my server forum I see posts looking for Rangers to harvest a particular item and quite a few are paying 20 cpu or higher for them.
So you don't need to give Rangers ch/combat/healing skills you have skill points leftover and pick some of those up. Now could some of our skills be improved most definetly but I see no need to take skills from another profession.

As for melee weapons, well, my prejuidices enter here and I have to say, "Sorry, this is Star Wars." I wouldn't bring a melee weapon to a gunfight, and I wouldn't hunt with one either.
Holo said that and he regretted it ever since. For one thing, a lightsaber is a melee weapon. Another, if Holo says "don't bring a knife to a gun fight" one can ask him then why he put that class in the game to begin with?
The point is melee is in the game so a mindset likeyours and Holo'shas no justification whatsoever. Holo already learned his lesson I believe.
Actually I believe the original design for SWG was to have no melee except for Jedi but early on in beta the people who really liked playing as warriors and such in other MMORPG and fans of EU begged for the Teras Kasi type player. So the devs caved and built the professions scratch.
I missed this gem. Bruce "Rambo" Lee. Now that would be an interesting combo.

Now a commando/tka now that makes sense!
That might be and the game might have been better off or worse off. But I think the game would be even more dominated by pets if there were no melee classes. As it stands, TK is in the expanded universe and they are star warsy enough. I cant really be sure why there are classes like rifleman, carbineer, commando, pikeman, fencer and heavy swordsman either. But the point I was making is that they are in the game and so should be balanced accordingly. The mindset that they don't belong in the game is inappropriate at this point. If Holo didn't think melee classes, for example, belonged in the GCW he shouldn't have put them in the game. My first character was an armorsmith/pistoleer and would still be playing him if the CSRs didn't take 2 months to fix the character after he got broken.

A complete skillset with a variety of types of skills is what will make you deadly. Expecting melee skills alone to do so for you is nonsense. Melee should be used opportunisticly, not as a stand alone method of fighting. Most people with a gun will destroy you. The only melee who has ever killed me was also a master gunfighter.
You better read some more books about jedi too, they did use blasters as well as lightsabers. The force can guide a blaster or a missile as well as it does a lightsaber. However they are more clumsy weapons and more crude.

Better watch all 3 original movies again then. Luke even used the force in rotj to pull a blaster from the hands of one of jabba's henchman and was going to shoot jabba with it.
But he didn't use it. "Could have used" is different than "did use". Removing a weapon from your opponent is a normal defensive move.
Even jedi could be killed by a blaster, better read tales of the bounty hunters trilogy sometime. Melee is not a stand alone profession. What was it qui gon Jinn said? Oh i remeber he said he wished it were true a jedi couldn't be killed.
I never said jedi couldn't be killed. Where did I say otherwise? Melee works very fine stand alone. You want to be a self-sifficienct ranger? Ranger/TKA is your only choice. No need for weapons, no need for armor, and the ability to self-buff. Almost like playing my EQ monk again. ![]()
And to be perfectly honest, I never had any desire to play a monk type player. I played one in EQ because it seemed the easiest to start with, and a play one in SWG because it seemed to fit my Trando which I picked purely to play a Ranger. Go figure.
"But he didn't use it. "Could have used" is different than "did use". Removing a weapon from your opponent is a normal defensive move."
how bout he was going to use it but jabba opened the trap door and luke missed? He didn't do it for defense, the guy with it had it in his holster. He pulled it to shoot jabba.
But hey if you think you can take on social creatures with melee go for it, i have far more tools available to me with ranged support specialist, pistoleer, ranger than any melee will ever have against multiple targets. Fanshot is in fact a cone attack and does quite a bit of damage to multiple creatures, i've taken down 3 white cons using nothing more than phecnacines and fanshot andhealthshot 1& 2 and bodyshot2 all at once mind you. With me carbineer/medic/scout wife with me i can take on multiple red cons as well. We are a pretty unbeatable hunting team. I also have melee skills, called pistol melee defense 1 & 2. If i had the skill points i'd take TKA but with master ranger, master gunfighter, ranged support specialist it's just not possible. But i do know the power that a ranged/melee combo has and i would never expect my template to beat onebecause i am aranged only profession.

We're getting pretty far off on a tangent so I'll leave you with this. I haven't read any of the newer books but the books out from before the new movies (which focused on the characters from the original) didn't have Luke using a blaster.
The only type of character that is able to kill me before I close is a BH with eyeshot. Once that is moved to master, it will be much harder for the typical BH to kill a TKM before he closes. And now that power boost is fixed, TKMs will be much harder to kill. The difference between a non-master TK and a master is astounding. A difference I'd like to see for all classes (ie that master actually means something unlike for ranger).
Melee in this game is not a support skill by any stretch of the imagination. It's in the game and you'll just have to live with it, whether it belongs or not. I'd also like to say that I think a master heavy swordsman/master doctor is one of the best templates I've seen yet for PvP.

First, it's easy to split social mobs. The more agggressive they are, the easier. I solo giant baz nitch lairs all the time. Second, unarmed spin attack 2 does over 1k damage to all melee opponents. You're not the only one who can attack more than one mob at a time. It's also funny that you mention fanshot because it is now going to aggro a lot more mobs than it used to. Makes it much harder for you to perform crowd control when you keep accidentally hitting the lair.
I'd agree with you if creatures acted more naturally. The fact that they are all blindingly stupid and charge into melee combat makes life exceptionally easy for a meleer. I can easily solo a camp of red NPCs except maybe that tusken warlord who like to one shot kill me before he's even on my map. Of course if I make a mistake odds are I'm one dead Trando.
I'm not an idiot who fights within hitting range of a lair, i pull mobs using single shots, i use fanshot if i get more than one. I never, ever fight close to a lair. When i clear the mobs i hit the lair once from range and wait for more to spawn until the lair is empty. When i am confident it is empty, normally happens when it's at half ham, i go full bore on it and destroy it with stopping shot which tends to do over 2000 damage each time, often for more than 3000.
Ranged profession rangers are much more effective than melee rangers will ever be. I'd like to see you tank a red con CL 37 or higher creature by being a master melee/master ranger. Even with major spices you'd get your butt handed to you in no time.

Did you ever die to a Crazed Durni? A Giant Gubber?
What the heck are you doing wrong?
I've got a scout/marksman alt who plays on Corellia/Tempest. I've put almost no time into him, so all he's got is scout Trapping III and marksman Pistol IV. No elite skills at all, period. I do have Novice Medic, but almost never use my stims; I don't remember the last time I had to use one during combat. I am wearing a complete set of Mabari Armorweave, and I did have it all sliced, but it's hardly "all that." And even when I was using a discount-priced aggressively mediocre scout blaster, I was killing crazed durnls and giant gubbers before they even figured out where I was!
Then I used my wooly hide profits to go out and buy a high-end FWG5 and a couple of crates of powerups. Now they go down in three pulls of the trigger - so fast that even social mobs don't have time to figure out where I am, half the time. Heck, against crazed durnls and giant gubbers I wouldn't even bother to use traps if I didn't need the trapping XP.
I'm not a rifleman, but the riflemen I know mostly carry a spraystick as a backup weapon, because it uses rifle skill but doesn't gimp your accuracy at point blank the way other rifles do. So far as I know, you still take the extra melee damage from having a rifle equipped, though.
Look, unless you can get a rifle that one-shots things you're trying to hunt, my advice is get rid of the rifle. Too many solo fights end up at point blank range anyway. And against anything that cons white or below, even at 60 meters range I'm hitting almost every shot when lying prone. Rifles are for big groups, orPVP snipers, or for master CHs who have a pet tanking for them, not scouts and rangers.
You are lying prone and starting the attack from about 45 to 50 meters away, right, just barely within trap-throwing range?
Of course, it's also possible that you've screwed up your HAM setup? Did you by any chance go cheap on your secondary stats?
I'm just grasping at straws here, because you have to be doing something wrong to have that much trouble with combat.
