Thread: Discussion on the advocation of Creature enhancements vs. General enhancements to Rangers
I want both PvP and PvE. I want to pilot a ship too (and yes, not only do I like RPG's, I like twitch). Is that so wrong?
I wonder if this is an opportunity to, yet again, shamelessly plug my stealth proposal...

One thing that may help shed light on this issue is that we were told that the Devs decided we were to be the ultimate creature hunters. That is, in part, why we focus on the PvE aspects of things.
Have we not been told many things by the Devs, that have been completely 180'd. i.e. the original skill/prof descriptions didn't match the reality for most professions...
I plan to ask them if that is still our future....
Does that necessitate that most post/ideas should advocate a narrow vision of the profession (just my opinion), in stead of being well rounded, in most aspects of the game....
I would argue that a 'narrow'professionis exactly why one chooses to be a certain profession. That is why I don't think we should have herbal healing and other skills that belong to another profession. No one chooses to bea crafter so they can be better at combat. They stack if they want to be a combatant. I am all for traps working on humanoids, including PCs, but we were told 'no way.' I also think we should have some role in combat, but the reality is we are creature combatants (as the profession is designed currently). That being said, I think that we never have been intended to be, nor never will be (or should be) Military Rangers. That is what commando's should theorhetically do. That being said, I will still fight for PvP changes if the community agrees that they are for the better (i.e. Stealth), butI don't see why we should become a PvP profession.

by narrow, I only meant creature only. For example: Docs are not only a support profession, they can remove there own states, buff themselves of coarse, heal there own poisons, as well as others. There "support" abilities while not directly connected to combat, butGREATLY increases there combat effectiveness in both PvE and PvP. SL are another example, this support profession raises its melee/ ranged defenses by 30, removes dizzy, gives perma burst run, increases accuracy, not only for themselves but for the entire group, once again, a support role enhancing that persons own combat effectiveness.
Much like Rifleman is a blend of a sniper and a heavy gunner, I'd like to see Ranger follow suit, more of a blend of the military ranger and the outdoorsman. Def vs. states, making a ranger both a better hunter, and a better combatant, same with resists.. I like the idea of tying stealth to conceal as previously posted by another ranger... and making creature to hit, just to hit, applying itself to both styles....and so on...
Any combat/combat support profession shouldbe effective in pvp/gcw..... as stated by the Devs.

"My point being why does most of the Ranger community advocatesenhancing Rangers for PvE only, instead of enhancing them in general? Allowing Rangers to be more usefull in all aspects of gameplay rather than 1 aspect of it. Not all players want to be PvE only, creature hunters only, PvP only, crafting only. Most players I know want to be somewhat effective as many aspects of the game as they can."
And isn't that why we have enough skill points to master multiple professions? Even ones that aren't at all related? I really can't understand what your premise is. Should Rangers be good at everything and cost 250 skill points? Why not do the same to all professions? There would be no player interdependance, and hence little need for a community beyond role playing purposes, if all characters could do all things. Premise for discussion = My point being why does most of the Ranger community advocatesenhancing Rangers for PvE only, instead of enhancing them in general?
Your statement that all of the promises and statements by the Developers were empty or hollow (redundant description, by the way (thanks professor, If this were a thesis that would be duly noted, however the purpose being emphasis redundance is concidered acceptable andi'm sure there's plenty of comma slices, and mispellings for you to pick at too)) was incorrect. Better recheck your facts, this community was told more improvements where on the way soon, that was almost a year ago.
And I suppose you didn't waste my time, I allowed your tangent to waste it. I won't do it again. Very good, accept responsability for your on actions

I have read the Ranger forums almost daily for over a year.... I played ranger for nearly 6 months.
In that case, I am mind boggled by your question
Sorry I lost ya.
RESULTS: We have embraced our intended position in the game and are making attempts to help the DEVs realize their (and our) vision of what rangers should be.
Not to be rude, but if you've been paying attention to all our posts over the last year, you'd have noticed this simple fact and its resulting reaction from us, the ranger community.
- Rescue-- ummm ok, i can see sacraficing your self so the stackers can regroup
- What else provides direct support for other professions?
- Most so called support professions support themselves as well as others. Like Doc and SL.
2) Advocating changes to the profession, specificallypushing for PvE/Creature only changes, instead of advocating general enhancements that would support all playstyles. The question being, How does this benefit the profession as a whole? Not just PvE'ers, or PvP'ers, or BadgeCollectore, or RP'ers.
- All our traps and skills work on CH pets in PvP, Combat Medics get Doctors as a counter, so Creature Handlers will have Rangers!
- Give some factional importance to camps like being able to go overt in a HTFBK and drop turrets and scanners in HTFBKs to make a short term raid base anywhere.
- Thedefences that we could get would help close the gap a little in PvP too pure PvP template players. (not a lot but a little)
- /areatrack as it it (or even with a little improvement) is a BIG asset in PvP right now.
- And many of the ideas that have been looked at by the Ranger community that might or might not get in our skill set:
- Stealth
- Player Traps (now that BH have been released from the trapping)
- Vastly improved camps in the modular camp proposal
- The many (and very well done) posts on improving player tracking or even player stalking
- And so much in the Outdoorsman and Nemo's, Rooks, Owen-Lars and my revamp ideas (just quoting a few recent ones that come to mind)
SO I guess my point is that yes we want to be PvE centric but many of the skills should bleed over to PvP

Ahh forget it, I'm obvioulsly not able to get my point across without people inserting there own assumptions and assigning them to my statements. I though my questions/statements where pretty simple and straight forward.
All my answers on this are for Ranger as a stand alone profession with no other skills whatsoever
1) How is Ranger really a support profession. We have no combat ability to directly deal damage with the exception of doing some damage to a creatures mind pool with a blind trap. when hunting with a group we can apply states to creatures so that combat people don't waste thier time or HAM applying those states. We can also slow or immobilise creatures when an escape is called for.Crafter support, i just don't buy it, I see it, but I'd rather Ranger be more of an actuall profession than a mobile harvester.
- Rescue-- ummm ok, i can see sacraficing your self so the stackers can regroup
- What else provides direct support for other professions?Camps are nerfed to hell but still help everyone heal a little faster, especially if there is no Doc present. We can track players or mobs for the other professions, saving time and energy. Camo can help others travel quicker or snipe more efficiently.
- Most so called support professions support themselves as well as others. Like Doc and SL. We're broken in that regard right now, unless you take into account picking up additional non ranger skills, which a Doc or SL has to do also to be effective at higher level.
I'm a fan of specializing, doing one thing and doing it well. To me being limited to a degree forces creativity in tactics and style, no matter how you play. I like the idea of working with the little you have. To me, that's a benefit.
