I was sitting in a camp one day ... small by comparison ... in the days of long long ago, before even mask scent worked.
I watched a Creature Handler with great beasts running toward me. He asked to enter my camp and being the generous sort I did not object.
He asked what I was doing on Endor, so far far awayfrom civilization.
I said I lived there.
He shook his head at me and pulled out some pets (you needed camps to do that those days) and ran off into the woods.
His lack of understanding ... his disbelief ...
... oh I have such wonderful things to show you ....
It was then that I knew. As to why ... well, if this little story doesn't clear it up, there really isn't anything I can say that would adequately explain.

well.....as a beginning player, my rock beetle ran away.
I took up the helm of ranger to ensure something like that never happens again......*sniffles*

For me it was simple.
I have a tendancy to stay away from towns. What better way to survive than to become a ranger and learn the untamed places on any given planet?

I didn't choose ranger, it has chosen me.
Really it seemed the onlyprof that wasa true fit to me in real life and gameplay. Back in the old dice throwing D&D days I was a master monk. In real life I've always been somewhat of a loner and like to do "odd' things that tend to make othersask 'why would you do what?' Example: I worked as a wildland firefighter for nine years, then completly switched gears and studied laser physics. I now work as a laser engineer.Niether beinga very common profession but each interesting in its own way. My current favorate hobbyto get me outdoors is geocaching (don't ask me to explain, do a google search, then you can ask why). The ranger prof looked like it would allow me to be away from civilization for long periods of gameplay withrifleman, low levelmedic and low level entertainereven longer between visits topopulation centers. I doubted many others would also be rangers, this was also desirable(it makes people say why the **** do you want to do that), And dammit the camo's just look cool.
Right now I'm novice ranger, master marksman and still dabble in some of the "lesser" professions. When I obtain master ranger/master rifleman my template will be complete (there will even still be some room for novice entertainer or medic, not sure which quite yet).

My path to Ranger was through Creature Handler as a few others have posted here already. While out camping, trapping, and hunting with my creatures I accumulated enoughexperience to get Novice Ranger and eventually I went all the way to Master. Loved every minute of it and I still find myselfout wandering in thewilderness.I have since dropped the Master title for the 0/0/4/0 combination so I could try out chef and medic but oneday I will return.
On second thought... after reading this thread:

I agree with what Fred said, no we are not damage dealers, we are not tanks, we are leftover meatloaf from Aug 2003.
I now believe my loveof Ranger comes from my deep passion for ground meat in concentrated loaf form.

Ahh....Back in the day....
...before starships
...before vehicles
...before mounts
...before player cities
...before jedi
...before even the first architects spoiled the land with their factories
That is when I became Master Ranger. You had the wimps that took shuttles and Real Geneder Defiened Humaniods that would walk from city to city! I would of gotten alot of POI badges, if they were out back then.
I think the better question is "Why am I still Master Ranger?" Don't know. I keep on thinking of giving it up for some combat profession, but then I get tiered of grinding combat. Or grinding crafting. Or grinding medic. Or grinding entetainer. Except for the last box of camps, I never realy felt like I was grinding for Ranger. I was playing and enjoying the game.
The problem for me, was the journey was very fun, but then it ended and all I got was this nice looking camp.
