Thread: Nrass... Why is a stealther far too imbalancing?

Well, actually 4-0-4-0 scout along with an elite combat class is probably the ultimate creature hunter (kind of a useless hunter if you can't harvest imho), but yea, I totally agree, and that's probably the single biggest thing that really bothers me about ranger, is that if we have any destinction at all, it should be that, and it's not even close.

I love your idea about stealther btw. That would go a long ways towards making rangers "cool" and make that whole branch of the tree some meaning.

One more note... the idea of the ultimate creature hunter is a joke.

A Bounty Hunter is just as effective, if not moreso, against creatures as we are. Their higher damage is just as effective as our traps any day.

In fact... any elite combat prof in conjunction with 4/0/0/0 Scout is "the ultimate creature hunter".

I really like the idea of using stealth not to turn us invsibile but to make us yellow dots on the radar. That is a grat idea and a cool way around thier concerns.

There are some good ideas here,

I like the yellow blip on the map, or the negatives to hit, or the complete removal of the player from the radar/ overhead maps (in the wilderness seems like the perfect balance) I really hope something good for all of us come out of this.

I personally am shocked that Thunderheart knows we exist. Even more kudos to N'Raas. Sounds like the modular camp idea may not be such a far fetched idea after all.

Ok, I'm getting a little tired of how this stealth unit business always gets dismissed out of hand...

For some STOOOOPID reason the posting program is fubar, THEREFORE we now write this in notepad...

Ok, I'm getting a little tired of how this stealth unit business always gets dismissed out of hand...

Myth # 1: Packet sniffers (or It's The Server Stupid)
First thing about this is you do NOT send any data warning any other client that does not know of the stealth unit. The server holds that internally and waits to send any data till after the stealth unit attacks. Unfortunately you will have to live with also being invisible both visually and on radar. You can't do one without the other sense you are sending the client data and can be hacked. This effect is also seen when you get those "pop in" spawns as you travel... and suddenly get pounded on. That is fair but this isn't? Show me the guy that has a "Sniffer" that can detect thease warp-on-you spawns and avoid them. Bet'cha can't. Why? His client hasn't been sent the info that the server has about the critter he is blindly walking into... till it is too late. Don't tell me it can't be done hacker-free, it can.

Myth # 2: Imbalance (or It's Supposed to Cost Something)
No doubt about it, the actual invisible to radar bit must be a Maser Ranger Skill. It should take time, experience and dedication. You should have to spend skill points and be robbed of combat points. If the smuggler is getting this too it should also be only at master (in town only btw, I would suggest they get the city and we get the country). If you really, really must then put the hide from NPC ability higher up in the trees, but this is counter intuitive to me as it really is easier to hide from a human at least (wouldn't know about lizard and Twi'lek senses tho).

Myth # 3: Oh the Griefing and Wringing of Hands (or Please Start Thinking Outside the MMOG Box)
Just what is this arguement about the covert scanner? I do not understand that statement in light of the fact that a griefage is perpatrated in certain towns every **edit** day by putting these things near the shuttle along with the faction base perk right there to blow you way even before you load on the client??? Some how this is fair game, but sneaking by the detector is not???? LET'S BE REAL. If this is such a worry, add a hartbeat monitor to the perk list and have a chance of it picking you up while cloked. This would not give a proper IFF warning and as such would TEF anyone. ANYONE. A Nuetral could be shot. Happy? MmmmKaaay?

I would go on, but I have to work...

"Unfortunately you will have to live with also being invisible both visually and on radar."

Aye, we are in agreement there. This would be considered the DAoC method of concealment, don't send any information about the invisible player to the client, and there is no way to hack the client to get that data.

The issue here is of course whether the developers actually want to do a DAoC version of invisibility, or go in their owndirection.

"No doubt about it, the actual invisible to radar bit must be a Maser Ranger Skill."

If such a skill that allowed players to move while invisible, it would have to have a massive skill point cost associated with it.

Personally, I don't believe that Master Ranger is sufficient. A new profession with the Wayfaring branch as a prerequisite (perhaps named Infilitrator) would be necessary to produce a high enough skill cost for such a powerful skill.

Infiltrator Vs. Ranger...I don't know that would be a tough call. I guess if you had the points you could pull both off. Would that be the first Ultra Profession that needed an elite as a prerequisite? It would be worth ditching hte useless skills and focusing on. I like this idea too.

Yes, that was what I was thinking.

Of course, such a profession would probably need other prerequisites as well, perhaps some Brawler or Marksman lines, but you get the gist.

What about making it harder forPvP opponents to target you if you are concelaed? They can see the dot but they can't see you well enough to make out a target? There would have to be a range limitation though.Mabye the hit "tab" and you get highlighted, but when they hit "attack", a message comes up that says "You see a shadow, but cannot make a clear shot". they would have t ocome in closer or keep trying to attack until they suceed. This is also a good argument for binos orgoggles of some sort that A or W Smiths could craft to counter our skill.Just a thought.

I'm not sure such a skill is that powerful, if /conceal broke as soon as you opened fire, it's not worth being a third level profession (are there any third level professions ?).

Give it a range you have to be outside of for it to work (it's never going to work on a melee character is it ?), have it break as soon as you attack or get attacked (so no invisible rangers training rancors on people - you've been spotted, deal with it), and have it only work if you're prone or crawling (if crawling there should be a chance it breaks especially if you /burstrun whilst crawing).

I don't get why this would be such an overpowering skill ? The key is absolutely that it has to break as soon as you get attacked - as soon as you open fire, camouflage goes out the window, this isn't much different to a sniper, if you fail to take out the target with the first shot, by the second shot everyone knows exactly where you are.

Sorry that should be "it absolutely has to break as soon as you attack", although "get attacked" works almost as well - "uh, larry, why's that rancor wailing on a bush ?"
