Thread: State of the Profession (Feb 29)

NRaas, maybe you should abbreviate the SotP in a form of a teaser so it's easier for people to read at a glance what the gist of it all is. Something like this maybe:
- /rescue doesn't work. When it succeeds, the effect is so paltry that it isn't worth it.
- /areatrack is a joke for anything but player hunting
- Master Rangers shouldharvest more than 30% more than a master scout
- Melee combatants have 5 terrain negotiation skill out of the whole profession thatthey can make use of
- Limiting the creature to-hit bonus to normal ranged attacks isn't good enough
- The HTFB is the only camp that's worth making because it has crafting stations and a bonus to healing equal to a medical droid. And those being the only two reasons to make the HTFB, there's almost never a reason to make a camp.
- Versus difficulty 22 creatures at the master Ranger level, traps fail about 60% of the time. Against creatures that any character with a master level in a combat profession can solo unbuffed, traps are worthless.
- Camoflauge barely offers any bonus greater than what mask scent gives you, so mainly it's only good for hiding non-scout friends.
Or you could even shorten it to this:
Currently the only reasons to be a master Ranger are:
- For flavor, because you like the idea of being a Ranger
- 30% bonus to creature harvesting
- For Riflemen, the terrain negotiation is helpful

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. But it doesn't really matter, you know what I meant, right?
Awesome post,
I am curious if there is anything moving towards being able to /bana player from camps.
I remember doing a raid on a Rebel Faction Base a while back, and while we were healing our wounds, some of the Rebels happened upon our camp and began to /listen / /watch our entertainers in MY camp. Had I been able to /ban them from my camp, they would have had to find their own way of healing there mind wounds. Just an idea.

I think that it needs some editing from what it is now. Specifically, I think it would be a better list if very low-priority issues were moved from the current categories into their own category. The hunting lodge idea doesn't deserve as much attention as any of the bugs, for example.
Aside from that, I think it's bar-none the best SotP doc in any of the forums. It's very long, but it's built in such a way that it's easy to read and understand; and it's length is due to necessity, not a lack of brevity. I would hate to see it go, or to see it replaced with something that leaves out all of the hard work of the Ranger community.
Still, it might be a good idea to create a Cliff Notes version of the document that lists out some of the main points and skips the details. Some may want to read the Ranger SotP without reading every good idea and every aspect of each problem.
But here's what I think is most important: what do the Devs and THthink? Do they want it shorter so it's easier to read, at the cost of the details? Or do they want to know as much as they can by reading this document rather than having to fish the forum for the details?
I agree, N'Raas's list is extremely comprehensive and has everything any Ranger could possibly want, but it would do more good than harm to have it sectioned off into Top Issues, Bugs, and Wishes, in that order. The list itself would probably grow a bit due to duplicate headings (Top Issues with camps, Bugs with camps, and Wishes for camps, e.g.), but that way we could have the most pertinent information at the top, right where Thunderheart could easily see what we want most out of the profession. Plus, by having the Bugs section after the Top Issues section, we could avoid the previous problem of only getting developer responses to bugs and having everything else ignored because it was at the top of a very long list of issues.
