Thread: Rangers cannot PVP
Not from my lack of other skills or lack of tactics..I have the full marksman tree and about 8 top class sliced weapons at my disposal.
I'm talking about being jumped by suprise outside a med center, poised by a combat medic then eye-shot 3 times in a row by a BH... you're down in 3 seconds flat before you've even got time to think the word "tactic".
The only way I can see us being any use is when we get player tracking, following your asailant back to his/her home base with friends in tow and get revenge.
Other than exploring some of the BH tree and becoming and eye shot spamming idoit myself, or buying tonnes of composite armour (kind of out of character for a ranger really) I can't think of anything else.

Eyeshot is best on people who keep their mind bar very low and enter PvP without helmets. I can spam it at one shot a second for 92 - 140 points of damage. Most people die in about 6 shots. If they have a helmet it's considerably tougher. The best thing to do is team up with a combat medic with mind poison or a sniper. If the person's on a muon gold downer and they're in range it's pretty much done. Also even if someone has a huge mind pool it's best to lead with eyeshot since this puts the blind state on them, then work on a weakest pool. Mind shot will be nerfed or mind healable soon anyway since this combat ability was an oversight after the mind pool was made unhealable by medics in Beta.
But if they fixed Ranger line and made it better for PvP I'd go back to Master Ranger. I just got sick of not using traps on the same animals I own in the wild, not using traps on humans when the same tranquilizer works on Rontos, having my huge bases disappear in 120 seconds (barely long enough to leave and do 2 forages) huge bases evaporating because something entered the camp, kreetles breaking my maskscent and attacking from 70 meters away, Borgle Life Suckers going rabid when they saw through my camoflauge and coming from 100 meters away. Besides that, the Ranger traps never once worked for me. So....
I kept wayfaring line and dropped the rest. I never use maskscent and never get mobs coming at me from over 60 meters. I am safer now out on remote planets than I was before. And my phecnacine, adhesive mesh, and glowires work fine for me.

Pistoleer is slightly higher board than BH but that's not saying much. There are a few good people in each. I'm still on the learning curve for PvP (think I maxed it for PvE) and already I've noticed a few things. One is anytime you go in without a helmet you're dead. Two is rifles, poisons, and eyeshot are best if you're low on overall firepower, because the other guy's medics can't do anything if you kill the mind pool. Three is my ham bars are too short for PvP. I keep hams short and raise secondaries for long battles with stupid animals. But players are way smarter and it's difficult to break contact like you can with animals. Most importantly is the benefit of a good team whereby the doctors buff you so you can wear good armor, you have cheap supplies of mind food to wear helmets, and you have people for long range, short range, medium, and diseass / cures. Then it gets fun.

The BH and the pistoleer boards are the bottom level of maturity I have avoided them as much as possible for some time now. Neither side wants to be mature and reasonable.
I can beat a BH in certain situations, depends on the BH really, some are good and some suck.

Um if you guys havnt realized yet i am a master ch and trickshot pistoleer. Your cl50 pets are garbage crap compared to the commandos 14k damage. You are not realizing that as a master ch my gurreck get killed in one shot please dont tell me to go ch crap. And for pistoleer rifleman and crabineer being combt they are not as trikshot i do about 1to2k damage which is nothing. Go BH or commando if u wanna PVP cause well everyone else in PVP is. DOnt go CH not worth getting your full grown CL50 pet incapped in one shot.

Master CH Master Ranger Pistoleer
Oh yes if u think a crystal snake is gonna do anything u must be on a newbie server cause a commando could take that in less then one hit heh
If they apply the 75% PvP reduction to pets you'll be singing a slightly different tune.
Commandos can't hit squat if the target is smart enough to be moving and stay out of flame range (16m)

I have a winning record so far. Course I don't duel fully armored people with lightning cannons and particle beams and pets the size of New Jersey either (well, not anymore). I don't wear armor, or a shield, and I use only pistols.
Who, then, do you exactly fight? Novice Entertainers?
Hee Hee.

Give us some insite on how to be a PvP Ranger, because I don't see it.
Master Ranger can PvP just as well as any other player who puts slightly more than half their skill points into a non-combat ability. You can be master carbineer / ranger, gunfighter / ranger, etc., and the coolest thing I've seen maybe ever: Doctor Ranger. Yep, got ranger to HTFB and was master doc. His role was to setup the command center when they were attacking something. Because he relied on his team to keep people away and used the objects in the HTFB as cover, he didn't enter combat. So the medics would drag back the incapped / poisoned / diseased and players with unrecoverable mind wounds would take cover there, as well as the camp being a rally point / beach head.
Anything in this game is possible and different skillscombs require different tactics. Our guild has a master chef who's almost to master pistoleer. While the doctor buffs us, he gives us a non-stop supply of mind foods. Most people enter combat starving and weak, but even without buffs the chef food puts his mind up by another 300 with good regens and the drink combos are almost as good as buffs, just not as long. Then you can wear full armor, spam specials, and take mind pool hits a lot better. I in return harvest the best flavor meats and best OQ meats for the doc and the cook, which is why I had a hissy fit when the 09.08.03 patch cut harvests in half.

No Yp, Hairdressers andChefs top my list, with the occasional Image Designer. (Wise ass)
What I meant - pick your battles wisely -
TK masters are easy, just stay outta wha-ping range (hand to gland hurtz yanno). Bounty hunters gots them some nasty mean shots, like eye shot, left ear shot, right big toe shot, who the hell knows, but they make your nose run and its hard to fight and honk your beezer. Commandos get them some mean ugly rifle looking things. Don't work for diddley half the time on beasties ( why yes, that thing is acid resistant ya dummy ) but they tend to muss my hair down to the soles of my big flat feets. And anytime I see anyone fully armored, besides giggling at em, God that stuff is ugly, I realize that - 1. They are badand may kill me, no biggie... or more likely- 2. They are insecure and if I do kill em, they will whine for freaking days and haunt me til I leave the planet or if they kill me they will "tell" me to death about how uber they are. So I leave the armored clowns alone.
So there -- neener neener say I --

off to draw more Xs on durnis, if the stoopid resource shift is over that is
Well I guess the only way to do what you're describing is solo hunting on enemies with your TEF on. If you have no helmet / buffs and someone catches you with eyeshot you'll be dead in less than ten seconds and it's a lot harder to keep over 64 meters away from everyone in combat. Also meleers are being changed so they don't have to stop to hit so if you're running and they get within 15 meters you're gonna drop like a rock.

I'm a master ranger, and the only PvP complaint I have is my traps don't work on pets. Ranger is no more a PvP class than an architect is (ok the 2 +10 defense mods actually make us a little better). I doubt it's supposed to be. Ranger is not aPvP combat class. Repeat after me - ranger is not aPvP combat class. If you want to be good shooting a weapon, take a class that gives you those skills. Of all the problems I see with ranger, this doesn't even make the list. At most I can see a trap or two affecting NPCs/players - but what is it about the ranger mythos that makes you think weshould rock at PvP? Perhaps you are confusing this class with Rifleman...
