Thread: State of the Profession (Oct 14)
Actually, given the way we are implemented in game right now, we are EQ, etc. style rangers, not military style. Every ability we get is geared towards creatures, not enemies. Sometimes I'd like to be more of the combat style ranger too, but that doesn't seem to be what the devs want from the class. I think their intention was that we be the place where the PvE lovers come to enjoy the game. /shrug

Not really, our camo works against npcs, our camps work for everybody, traps are restricted for no good reason at all as they do nothing that other professions can't do with their weapon specials. Tracking works for npcs, creatures, and PLAYERS.
To make us better rounded all of our skills should apply to npcs, players, and animals(including pets). Then we'd be worth 140 skill points. NO other professions is so limited as we are.
Awesome List! Thanks for adding in a link to my post about fixed resources!
I like the idea of ranger only weapons. They should be different from everyday weapons. I think the idea of a bow is not a bad idea and the main reason is because i assume they could be made to be much quieter then a conventional gun or blaster type weapon. That is why it makes sense to have an older technology. If it is possible to inflict damage at range in stealth then it is valuable technology even if it is old. Maybe using a quiet weapon would give a percent change that you dont draw aggro or break camo.
wow, we have a nice little community here
first time posting for me on this forum
this is brilliant work NRaas and to everyone else supplying ideas. but, like someone said earleir, dont try to get too aesthetic and carried away about superficial improvements, the main issues are more improtant though i love the more casual ideas as well.
i think before we ask the devs to work too hard on our little ol profession, we better let them rebalance the whole game and anazlyze their new possible CH changes (or enrf in some people's view). we are improtant but that is what we should be supporting and voicing mostly right now, because if the public thinks they screw up with rebalancing then no ones gonna need a ranger anymore since there wont be anyone elft palying ![]()
one other littl thing, in addition to the +5 or 10 bonus to us being able to sue better pets as non-ch's, is it too much to ask the devs to let US be the ones who train the creatures for mounts and whatnot? i thought that would be cool (mostly cause on my server ch's charge way too much for selling pets and now they're gonna charge a ton of money for mount training).
just my 2 cents .. dont flame me for the mount training idea! ![]()
"i think before we ask the devs to work too hard on our little ol profession, we better let them rebalance the whole game and anazlyze their new possible CH changes"
The Creature Handler profession is actually maintained by a separate developer than ourselves, so they could work on us and CH at the same time. ![]()
However, our developer is working on Player Cities, and soon after, will move onto Smugglers. It may be a while until his focus returns to us. ![]()
"is it too much to ask the devs to let US be the ones who train the creatures for mounts and whatnot?"
I am quite sure the Professional Creature Handlers would be extremely slighted by such a move...
Either way, the system is already too far into development to make such a drastic change. ![]()
I agree with Erdraug, I don't like the idea of a bow being the Ranger weapon, even a contemporary compound bow. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against archery. In fact I maintain a useful and popular traditional archers' Web site and, until recently, I was an avid and deadly accurate longbow target archer using my own hand-made self-nocked arrows. I just don't think the bow belongs as a player-character weapon in Star Wars Galaxies.
One of the things about Star Wars that appeals to me is how integrated technology is in the everyday life of the citizenry. Gadgets and weapons that make us swoon are old news to the inhabitants of the Star Wars universe. If we want to meld the tradition of the past with the technology of today (in SWG terms), then I think the bowcaster is the perfect weapon. Traditional, short range and folds for easy transportation. I realize its use is steeped in Wookie tradition and lore, but maybe we can find a bridge; maybe a sign of respect by the Wookies towards Rangers (as a profession) who have shown the dedication. Just a thought off the top of my head.
If put to a vote, I would vote no to the bow.

A couple of quick comments from the "noobie" perspective:
1) As another member said, this list has gotten way out of hand and it too long for it's own good. It's too difficult to look at and see what the REAL problems are versus just a lot of real pie-in-the-sky kinds of stuff. My suggestion is trim the list down to half a page, and get rid of all the "pork" on it. It's self-defeating.
2) So far the biggest dissappointment to me is that Rangers aren't better hunters. I've gotten the novice ranger box and 1 box into "tracking" line (which is supposed to give extra harvesting ability) but I really don't notice a drastic different (if any) in the amount of resources I'm able to get versus when I was simply a scout. Also, since ultimately one's ability to hunt comes down to combat anyway, I'm thinking that say a master pistoleer with minimal "hunting" scout skill, would probably have a lot easier time collecting a big pile of resources than a master ranger with only minimal combat skill. Just seems real backwards is all. Probably why you see so few rangers to begin with, lol.

The point of this list is to describe all the requests for possible inclusion in the Top 5 report.
- You will see that Report is reasonably more concise compared to this list.
