Thread: Serious Look at A Ranger Hunting Weapon
"If you read the EU novel Tales of the Bounty Hunters (think it was this one), there is a story of Bobba Fett in which he hunts his target with a Bow and Arrow, because he wanted tpo use the element of surprise and stealth.
By the way what do you think a bowcaster is. It is a space age crossbow. "
Yes I know whata bowcaster is...my point was that a regular bow, even a composite bow is not very 'Star Wars'. Bowcasters arefine because they fireenergy bolts, not regular crossbow bolts, and are even more interesting since they are made by and for wookiees. And no I haven't read that EU novel, nor do I think it matters. Star Wars to me isn't the novels, it's the movies. Anyhow, I do agree that a bow could be "Star Wars" enough, if they make it look high tech. I just don't want a bow that looks like it came out of EQ or D&D.
"Im not flamming you just bringging some (useless) SW EU info."
No problem, I dislike most of the EU stuff (especially when people try to justify something using it) but that's just my opinion. And some of it is great.
"Anyways to keep on track with the post. I would be happy if we could just use our traps on everyone, PvP, PvE. Since when are humanoids not capable of getting hurt with a trap. Its so anoying when I go Squill hunting and I cant use my traps. (In jungle warfare plnty of traps are set to incapacitate ones opponent."
You probably can't hit the squills because of the bug that won't allows us to use traps in caves. I'm hoping they allow us to use traps on creature pets soon...I won't go PVP unless they do. (I've spent 28 skill points on the trapping lines for scout and ranger...I don't want them to be useless in PVP!) ![]()
"By the way how do you guys get the quality of your traps to improve. No matter what I do the Qlty of mine is alwais a big fat 0."
You can't experiement on traps yet (or camps). Hopefully this is something they will fix when the new traps and camps are implemented.

This is not a flame... but for those of those that feel that just plain ol' wooden bows and arrows are too much like EQ and DAoC... what do you think the Ewoks on Endor use???
But seriously, I do like the idea of a space age hunting weapon tailored for the Rangers. Heck, I'd even go so far as to say each profession should eventually get specially made weapons unique to their class.. just my two cents worth.

what's the difference between what you describe and the traps we already get?
I mean you are suggesting status effects and damage. Traps already do that.
Actually thats a good idea.
Im not a ranger, but I do think you guys should have some perks for your proffession.. because really, camo and fancy camps aint exactly a perk.
Maybe make the ranger specific weapons be a slight combination of harvested items and artisan made items?
Say, a Ranger could make a crossbow (using the Bowcaster graphic) that requires wood, bone, (insert artisan made component).. this crossbow would have a durability of 50/50 and has no specials, so the weapon will actually break apart in 50 shots (if they make it lose 1 dur per shot). Now that crossbow, when made, would have an 'optional' slot, which would be the poison/chemical agent that its bolts are tipped with.
'optional slot' could be filled with:
Ranger Traps and Scout Traps (to make the xbow just fire long range traps)
PacifierTip (from herbivore meat and avian bone): makes in-combat creature 'peace' and not aggro for 10 seconds (but will aggro if attacked)
Venom Tip (from aggressive carnivore meat and animal bone): similar to combat medic poisons.
Tranquilizer Tip (from seafood and avian bone): slows down target's movement speed AND attack speeds.
Ranger xbows would only affect creatures (not humanoid npc's or players).
Another weapon could be one that allows a ranger tokill a creature with 1 shot and harvest its resources, but getting no XP for it.
Make it be a melee type weapon (range:3m) for the ranger. A Neural Scrambler Spear
Requires Metal (conductivity 100%)
Tatooine animal Bone
yavin hide
mind-attacking ranger trap (bone spur from scout line.. i dont know the names)
camo kit from planet creature is in
spice (any smuggler made spice that drastically reduces mind)
its durability would be 20 uses only.
With things like these, the rangers would excel at being the organic resource gatherers. Because as it is now, the only bussiness a ranger can engage in is harvesting, which anyone with novice scout can do. That a ranger can harvest more per kill? Who cares, a master commando (or master elite profession) can kill stuff much faster than the master ranger can and will harvest more per time.
If you've going to make a new ranger weapon, I would rather have a trap launcher that looks like a single shot grenade launcher.
It should increase our range for traps to 64m. Traps that do damage that are used with the launcher should be capable of killing a creature instead of reducing it's HAM to 1.
The launcher is made by a weaponsmith and the certification for it shows up in the ranger trapping line somewhere.
That would be a unique ranger weapon that would be affected by our natural ability to make/use traps, would not affect PvP, and would not unbalance PvE.
Let's just **edit** this non-starwarsie bit right now:

It's a racial slur.
It's short for Niponease. A little off topic though.
Good work on the Pics Fred!

'tis a quote from Mayberry, Don Knotts character (Barny Fiffe (sp?)). Never heard of any other use. Must be the connection to California this game has, the PC capital of the world...
