I hope everyone here realizes that all talk about new abilities, weapons, etc is just idle chatter and that there is zero probability of seeing anything more than what the devs have already mentioned (/track, etc)anytime soon.

It's been three months and they're still working on maskscent. All talk about trophies, bows, teeth necklaces, ranger cabins, etc is merely howling at the moon. We'll be lucky to see aone or twonew traps introduced (and working as advertised) within the next twomonths.

Bows would be awesome. But I disagree with the idea we should make any part of it ourselves. Ever shot a wooden arrow with a compound bow? Me either and I'm not going to attempt it.

Poison tips? Nope. A typical broadhead on an arrow cuts a 1-2" diameter hole in it's target. Blood and damage out the wazoo. No poison needed.

Range? Sad part is it will have to be close...very close. No Rambo-like explosives or distance. On the plus side, with a high quality bow, mucho camo, and a good shot, the animal will drop like a rock. Either that or run a few meters and drop. Today arrows can do more damage than a hunting rifle. The secret is surprise. You spook the animal and you miss. Simple as that.

PvP? Refer to that last statement. Try it and miss. Make it a non-PvP or NPC weapon.

A bow would have to be a one shot weapon. Very rarely can you actually get 2 off on the same animal. The megableed alone would make it worthwile.

/agree that weaponsmiths should make the bows

/agree that we should be able to apply our traps to the arrows.

/not sure that we should be able to make the arrows. Modern arrows are aluminum and plastic with no bone or hide. Of course, out tents take metal too and the master ranger does appear to become an electrical engineer at some point (able to build a crafting station from some metal, bone and hide? What am I, McGuyver?)

/not sure that poisons or disease should be able to be applied to the arrows. Other than in Fantasy, poison wasn't used on arrows. The only projectile in history to use disease would be the catapult, where the corpses of dead livestock would be hurtled over the walls of a castle under siege.

/agree that the arrows could be added to the bow like bait to a fishing pole.

/agree that the bow should look VERY high-tech

/agree that people that see themselves as "Army special forces" should still be allowed to use their rifles/carbines/pistols and not be forced to use the bow.

/disagree that a bow would be "un-starwarsy". Chewbacca used a Bowcatster (crossbow that fires blaster bolts?) Jango Fett used a dart launcher, the gamorreans in Jabba's palace used axes/vibroaxes. ThenI keep finding these stupid stone knives on meatlumps outside of coronet, AT-ST's are assigned to individual imperials to go paralope hunting, all the Jedi in game (npc's) don't have lightsabers, there is no sense of epic good vs evil. Maybe I should say "a bow wouldn't be more 'un-starwarsy' than the game already is."

/agree that it would help differentiate our class from scouts and part-timers.

/agree that could/should be months before this might happen.

/agree that the bow should not break /masksuicide(/maskscent) or /comegetme(/conceal).

/tell I like the idea of potentially having to reload a weapon in the middle of a fight! That's realistic!

/agree that all kinds of extra components could be built into the bow to increase it's effectiveness, especially vs animals.

/agree that the bow shouldn't be a PvP weapon, especially since we are not a PvP class, but a class that should excell in PvE combat.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

For the sake of keeping it simple... I think the Ranger should be a Bowcaster Specialist! I am not familiar with any other profession that makes use of this weapon and it would be cool to see someone actually use one. Just my thought...

"just idle chatter and that there is zero probability of seeing anything more than what the devs have already mentioned"

And that is a problem how?

Why can we not also talk about the future of the Profession?

Once GreenMarine returns to implement more stuff, we will have ample choices for him to focus on.

"Modern arrows are aluminum and plastic with no bone or hide."

Well that would just mean that our schematics would require a metal resource. Those crafting tools can do wonders you know.

"that poisons or disease should be able to be applied to the arrows"

I can see capsules attached to the heads of the arrows that would deliver biological agents and such.

I have been watching this "ranger weapon" debate from the sidelines for a while... (maybe I should stay there)...

This is an age where you have sabers made of LIGHT that chop off arms and cut people in half. You have STAR DESTROYERS that go into HYPERSPACE. DEATHSTARS that blow up PLANETS. BLASTERS!!

A bow and arrow just screams of EQ or LOTR or DAOC to me. I know we have Pikemen and fencers and stuff, but that can be attributed to the varying traditions and histories of the civilizations in SW.

I am 100% against it. A rifle of some sort - YES. A rifle that cripples in some way like 95% of the time with a 9 sec rate of fire. I figure that a master ranger should now where to hit a creature in order to cripple it.

Just my thoughts...

Ranger Hunting Bow

This weapon would be designed as a complex delivery system for the more advanced Ranger "Traps"

  • Compound Bow: This bow would be created by Weaponsmiths.

    • Frame crafted from Bone, Wood, or Inert Petrochemicals (plastics). Cams crafted from Metal. Strings crafted from woven Hide or Polymer.
    • Does a minimal amout of base damage, but instead relies on status effects.
    • Status effects work on creatures and humanoids (NPC's and Players) alike.
    • Is loaded with special arrows in the same manner fishing poles are loaded with bait.

  • Specialty Arrows:

    • Crafted and Certified by Rangers at various levels up the Advanced Trapping line.
    • Arrows effects include many of the Scout trap effects as well as many Ranger only effects:

      • Poison Arrows: No initial damage, but applies a small DoT to random HAM pool as well as possible status effects (dizzy, blind, vomiting)
      • Serrated Arrows: No initial damage, but applies a large DoT to random HAM pool.
      • Weighted Blunt Arrows: Low initial damage, but applies a long term stun effect.
      • Explosive Arrows: Advanced Trapping IV or Master Ranger. Heavy damage delivered to all within asmall area. Requires parts created by Weaponsmiths.

Bows have been and will continue to be used throughout the ages due to its simple to create and use design.

Star Wars has many examples to archaic weapon designs being used in this "futuristic" setting: from guards weilding polearms to Wookie bowcasters to Jedi lightsabers.

One of Lucas' favorite writers was Tolkien, think about it...

Quiz: Where did Lucas get the name for the forest moon of Endor?

"Daddy, what's that bad man doing to my (Star Wars)?"

"Son, that bad man is (SOE), and he's **edit**ing your (Star Wars)."

I love this idea. as long as whatever the weapon turns out to be still has that "star warsy feel" to it.

and if the bow and arrow doesn't fit, I would like to see a special certification for a "hunting pistol/rifle/carbine/ or something under the Ranger tree. Ora weapon certification that would only work well against creatures near teh bottom of the tree. and a more powerful one up top.

I think our traps should be made more effective.

Maybe a bow of some type giveing us the ability to throw/shoot our traps further.

Yep... I know have that one noted.

"Maybe a bow of some type giveing us the ability to throw/shoot our traps further."

Got that one listed as Trap Launcher suggestion and the Ranger Bow suggestion as well.
