Thread: Are you having fun as a Ranger?

Since day one I have worked toward Master Ranger (4/3/4/3, Master Hunterright now.) I don't macro or grind too much so advancement is very slow. Selling hides/meat/bone made me fairly rich compared to my friends. Its fun to be rich. I gave the money to help friends in crafting professions who were always short of cash...

The recent harvesting reduction stopped me in my tracks... all ofa sudden it wasn't fun to go hunting anymore. It's phsychological I am sure, but when I kill a critter for 5 units now that used to provide 21 units (I have the pets in group reduction also), well... its like suddenly getting a major pay cut at work... you kinda lose interest in the activity... and start looking for another job. Fairness is a very personal thing.

If you never knew that the harvest had been cut, well you can probably have fun hunting and make an even bigger killing in the market (I think resource quants will go down as many solo hunters choose to do other things, I understand others think it will go up... and over the very long run maybe so). I still have my harvest "pay cut" worming through my brain...

I am trying some other things like stalking lone declared faction players using /areatrack and ambushing them. No money and little fp in it... but its fun. I hope I am not accused of griefing but I think if you are declared (as I am) then you are fair game. I am not sure that my attention will hold for long doing this however. I have not found a close group to play/fight with in swg as I have in other games... when I do then I am sure the ranger skills will add something to the group and make it fun again for me. In the mean time I am still searching...swg is not like other games... and then again it is, fun is what you make of it I guess... sorry for the ramble.

Just how rare are we? I guess rarer than I thought considering what happened to me yesterday. I was getting some destroy missions right outside the starport in Coronet City on Corellia which is always ahive of activity. You would think these people had seen it all. And yet, as I was standing there, one fellow says in spatial chat, "Whoa, look, a Master Ranger." And as I turn to look at who said it, I see no less than 4 other characters stepping closer to me to gawk at the sight before them. On the one hand I felt a little self conscience and on the other hand I thought to myself " I bet that never happens

Thanks all for your inputs. From my game experience alone, I think I've discovered Ranger is the profession I want to pursue. It's good to hear that I won't be disappointed.

After only two nights of focusing on my Scouting skills, I'm having a blast. I've mostly been going solo, but that's my style half the time anyway. I group with my friends when they are online, but in their absence, I'm more likely to go solo than to look for a group of strangers. I also tend to play a vagabond character - little cash on hand and no permanent items to maintain (no house, no harvesters, etc.) Scouting seems to offer a lot for someone with my play-style. I think exploring the world, hunting, and providing service to groups may be a more enjoyable end-game for me than getting heavy into the Galactic Civil War, as I once thought I would do.

Last night I had my first random camp visitor. I was camping and crafting (and watching TV, I must admit), and a stranger wondered into camp to rest up. We had a pleasant chat, I gave him a few heals, watched him dance, and then he went on his way. It was really kind of fun in a way I wouldn't have expected. I'm surprised I didn't get into this profession sooner. At least most of the skill points I've spent already are in combat skills and medic skills that fit right in with the lone ranger image.

I seem to be pushing through my Scout skills pretty fast, and I'm hopeful to actually attain the title of Novice Ranger in a few weeks (I'm a very casual player - two nights in a row is unusual for me).

Keep the stories coming. I'm enjoying hearing them.

Yes, Ranger is one of the best professions, I was going for Master Swordsman gave it up when i made MasterScout.Being a Ranger and now part of a PA (FAR) makes it really fun, Ranger Hunts are ablast. I know it has its problems like most of the other professions, but I think these will be fixed.. I

Last night I was on the way out to hunt when I came across a novice scout sitting in a dinky two-person little camp. I asked how he was doing, and he told me he was bummed because he'd been looking for more than an hour, but couldn't find any big game.

I flashed a grin, whipped out my tracking skill and immediately pointed us in the right direction. We spent the next hour or so very successfully hunting torturs. He got tons of xp and we had a great time.

So am I having fun? Hell, yes I'm having fun. As far as I'm concerned, ranger/rifleman is one of the best combos in the game.

I'm having a blast! Ranger caught my eye from the first time I read the description, and that's what I targeted. I'll admit that about 3-4 weeks ago I was considering just "freezing" my Ranger progression because some of the columns didn't seem too useful to me. Then they announced the planned changes and I shifted into high gear to move forward.

I'm 4/3/1/4 now and expect to hit Master in the next week or two. I spend most of my time doing two things: group hunts on the advanced planets with friends, where it is my job to use traps to keep the critters disabled and to put up the cool camp, and surveying out at edges of the map for high-quality resources (e.g., Dantooine berry fruit) where a non-Ranger would have a more difficult time.

So far the harvesting thing hasn't really disabled me - I'm in a PA and we dump all the stuff together, so we can still assemble decent stacks. I agree that it seems like big cut - I guess we'll have to see where the supply/demand economy takes it.

The camo kits have been a bit disappointing, but I was only WF 3 when I used them, so I'm hoping that either SOE will improve them and/or my progression to WF 4 and then Master will help.

Oh - and I got a tell from a CH the other night asking for my help to find some specific babies to tame. He was offering cash for my services. I was tied up but steered him to another Ranger in the area.

I am having a blast!

My friends, both CH, actively seek me out for hunting expeditions. Others offer to pay for my services (/areatrack). I can't wait till /track, and the new traps!

Keep up the good work Devs! And thank you Delta for all the hard work you have done, and for putting up with the whiners. Eventually the whiners will chose another profession.

I love being a ranger!

Not that you couldn't guess that from my posts on the board.

Speaking of crazed durni hatred, I hated vynocks for the first month I played SWG. Really REALLY hated them and the fact they mobbed. (You should have seen me the first time I decided to shoot one and three of them came swooping down on me. I was "ack! ack! ack!"-ing at the screen while pressing down random buttons trying to attack them.

Needless to say, my attacking was not successful. I kept getting incapped by them, it drove me insane. I hated vynocks, until now when I can kill them fairly easily. Now, I just feel sorry for them. Flying around, typically cluelss about who is attacking them, me being prone and /masked about 30m away.

I also hated rogue bagerasets for a while (it was the first creature that killed me.. and boy, was that a shock!) until I realized the amount of XP they gave, the amount of hide they dropped, and the fact that they don't mob.

I am defintely enjoying Ranger - more than I had even expected I would. I have been on the game since the end of Beta2, and a week after the release I started my Scout with the intention of being a Ranger. Because I am not on as much as some (and becuase Camping experience can be a painfully slow thing), I only got to Master Scout and took up Ranger a day before the Big Patch. Even with the bugs, I have enjoyed the changes immensely.

I am now Ranger 1/1/1/2 about to be 1/1/2/3). Combined with my Carbine (only 20K from Carbineer now) and my Survey skills (level4, soon to be trimmed back to level 3 or 2), I have become a powerful resource gatherer, and the Areatrack has made hunting expeditions so much more effective.

I have not used any camo kits yet, though I have made some. I do a LOT of trapping, and the new traps have some issues but overall can be impressive. I can solo a yellow or red with the right combination of traps and some luck, which I was never able to do as a Master Scout.

Heck Yes!!

I loved being a scout. Since the announced the profession the development boards, and said what it was going to me, I wanted to do that. I have had a lot of fun. I enjoy groups and socializing well enough, but I'm a bit of casual player sometimes, so I dont have time to find a group. Or I just want to go exploring the planet. I have spent a lot of time just wandering about a planet looking at things, checking out the scenery, the animals, and terrain. It's really exciting to find a dungeon or static camp or something like that. Makes it worth while. Especially when I see people in town asking about a certain place, and I say, "yep I've seen it, I'll send you a waypoint, or if you like I can take you there." Man that is the best.

Ranger is just more of the same fun. I had hesitated with it before they announced what there going to change/add for them. With /conceal and camo kits, and the tracking, I was completely sold again. I like hunting, I like exporing, and I like being able to just about anywhere now, in relative saftey. I like being able to drop a camp down and hang out, enjoying the sunset, or dancing around my fire.

Having played scout since second day of the game, I can honestly say that it had some problem to start. I also think that that profession is nearly complete as far as straightening out the problems and making it a fleshed out profession. Mask Scent being the last of the big problem in my opinion. So I have full confidence that the devs will eventually do the same with Ranger. The camps still neeed some work, and traps need a serious look at for rangers. Although I like what they are planning on the new ideas, and traps vs NPC. That is a great start.

Yes, with some qualifications.

Number one is that I always play a ranger. There is something in the basic concept that appeals to me, no matter how badly implemented.

Number two is that I'm also a creature handler, pistoleer, medic, and artisan, and just last night gave up entertainer to recover some skill points. It's been fun being such a generalist, but skill increases will force me to specialize. It is getting very hard to give up useful skills for ranger skills of dubious value.

Hate to say this but because of the harvesting nerf my Ranger points are being eyed for the chopping block. I already gave up my Wayfaring line since I feel its now even more useless. If they fix Harvesting then I'll want to keep it but if it doesn't get fixed I can harvest just as much as a Master Scout than as a Ranger.
