yikes, I just dunno if I would do this or not (post stuff from our wishlist on other forums in hopes that they would support us). The reason is that every profession has a long list of their own wishlists and since the amount of development resources is fixed, what you very well may be asking is for them to support this above one of their own. The other thing is that even in crafting professions where the price and availability of creature resources is perceived as a problem, there is certainly mixed feelings about the ranger community. Often times there is a perception of greed on our part

That was the whole reason the million monkey post is written the way it is. It is not asking for them to support us in any big changes. We are asking them to support us in a quick change that would help them as well. Have a look at the most recent version of the proposal here. So far, correspondents have been supportive of the idea (according to Calc) and one would assume that they have a feel for their forums (and wouldn't support it if it had no chance of working).

It would be great to see increased harvesting soon, but unfortunately I probably will not be a Ranger long enough to see these changes happen. I'm gonna have to drop what I have left in Ranger soon in persuit of a more pvp oriented template GL guys, hopefully it wont take too long.

Nemo,

The problem is that there always has been, and always will be this sort of sentiment among many rangers:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=ranger&message.id=35906

On the one hand many rangers are asking that crafters support increased harvests for use under the pretence that it would somehow increase their supply and lower their costs. On the other hand we have rangers screaming that we are getting ripped off not because of anything to do with our harvest amounts, but because crafters are able to mark up products made from the things we harvest.

That's why I think this is a bad idea. We're just going to look like we are talking out of both sides of our mouth.

Every profession has a set of certifications, why not Scout/Ranger? You should be certified to harvest from creatures of level no higher than determined by your skill points in harvesting. So expert combatants may kill rancors all they want but harvest nil (or next to nil) if not certified. They can still harvest lower creatures, just will have to do a lot more killings (read"hard work") to achieve the same result (harvested amount). And groups will desperatly needmaster ranger(s) (or high enough level rangers) to harvest from their high level kills. Thus you choose between being better combatant or better harvester at some point.

Of course, this is not free of some issues like group doing all the killing and then ranger having all the harvest. But such a situation will be immediately detected (no ninja behaviour here) and dealt with accordingly (that ranger will never see a group again. Alternatively, having a ranger in the group gives everybody in the group hiscertfication level for harvesting(so long as (s)he is in the group) and the usual group harvesting rules apply. Good way of bringing up scout is by grouping with ranger and going hunting ;-)

That approach gives ranger unique certifications and makes ranger a desirable part of the group. The fact that a group without ranger won't be able to harvest high level creatures is logical - you can gather together a hundred novice weaponsmiths and they won't be able to make high level weapon they are not certified to. But if master weaponsmith makes a schematics (a-la joins the group for a set of missions) they'll be able to do some factory runs of that high level weapon. Hope, this analogy makes sense.

Certification code isin the game. Creature level code is in the game.Should berelatively straightforward to implement.

What do you think?

I don't know if this has been said and I can't remember if we put it in the Outdoorsman Proposal but has anyone though of being able to tab through dead creatures? Since I can't harvest when in combat and sometimes I have 2 or 3 creatures on me it makes it kind of a pain to have to click on them manually. A lot of times I will get 2 or 3 corpses piled on top of each other and its hard to click on a new corpse. Its not really a big deal just more annoying then anything.

Rather than respond to each individual thread about harvesting, I will compile the currrent situation here with a note about the Outdoorsman.

  1. I have posted a thread on the Correspondent Forumin regards to the Million Monkey Proposal (yikes). It references the the current Proposal we have. This thread has recieved nothing but positive feedback from those Correspondents who have chosen to post. In this thread, I questioned the Devs about if this was possible (they, ususally TH, do give responses there). I also brought up harvesting multiple resources, but made it known that that was secondary to an increased harvest.

  2. I would like to hold off posting the Million Monkey Proposal on the crafting fourms until I get an answer from TH regarding the issue, but I will send the posts out tomorrow if I haven't heard anything.

  3. The response I got regarding the Outdoorsman Proposal is *sigh* the same as always...wait until later. I did use this response (not a dircet quote, mind you) as leverage for the Million Monkey Proposal.

So, that's where the proposal stands right now. I will keep you updated.

The markup is something we have no control over. But remember that a larger amount of harvesting at Ranger will lead to Rangers having a larger share of the resource market. While the actual price of resources would probably go down,Rangers would probably make more money anyway. The markup is theirs to make. We have our own markups. Do you really think it costs even 1 cpu to hunt down these resources? It costs a bit (travel and weapons) but most of that can be covered by just running two missions when landing on the planet (while collecting resources as well). If we are able to harvest3-5 times as much then I don't think any Ranger should complain about getting 10 cpu. And 10 cpu for quality resources is a lot less than most crafters pay on my server. The main people to be affected by such a change are the low level scouts. It would sort of be a nerf but we would try to ensure that nothing changes for a Novice Scout. All that would change is the amount pulled at higher levels.

Think on this a bit. Rangers want to get paid well. With a change like this, Rangers should be getting significantly more resources. Let's use a 3x increase at Master Ranger (extremely reasonable in my opinion--I would argue that we should get more than that and still get triple harvesting). Stuff that the person in your thread wants 80cpu for could happily be sold at 30cpu for more money with the same amount of work. While crafters could mark that price up quite a bit, competition should drive their prices down. I can't guarantee what people will do on either end. But the simple fact that more resources are available means that people can't easily charge as much for them. But a Master Ranger is very unlikely to lose out on the deal.

Well, I think this might have been an interesting idea during the implementation phase of all this stuff last spring, but it's too late now. I try to adhere to the "don't suggest nerfs on others" credo so this is a no-go to me.

But it wouldn't do me any good anyway. The people that slay the big beasts are those that either have the uber combat templates and solo-them, or the people who go out on big group hunts, and I am neither.

I think this is an interesting proposal. For one thing, it would promote the interdependency that the devs seem to so want. Perhaps this is an idea that can be hashed out among the community and refined?

NIce work. I just read the letter from Garry Gassit or who ever on the SWG front page. He tells the current plan for the next several publishes. The only profession they list getting any work is SL. So if that's the usualy schedule we are looking at for all the professions getting worked on, we are in for a long haul. Because I'm sure we are not in the top 5 list of professions.

Have a look at this thread. It makes me think that the crafters might not complain too much about getting us a harvesting boost. When they start coming to your board complaining that you can't harvest enough for them then maybe they will think that a fix for us is really a fix for them. Especially when they are so forceful about it (I'm guessing they ran into a hologrinder and got told off).
