I never wanted to be anything else.
Of course, I always choose ranger (or equivalent) in any game I play.

I'm on Chimaera which I think has a reasonable amount of Rangers; I do see a Master Ranger most times I log in nowadays.
As for work, I've more or less retired from resource gathering. It was really doing more damage to my love of the profession, and mentally I was burnt out from it. More recently I've been getting a lot of requests for tracking (Jedi trials, Hermit quest, Black Sun, RIS Components) which I've been mainly turning down, due to my embarrassment when I proclaim there's nothing within a kilometre diameter and then move a fraction and have a dozen mobs spawn round me.
So nowadays I barely hire my services at all. I tend to head offinto the wilderness and if I come across anyone, see if I can help out. I saw some combatants on Dathomir, and helped one take down an Elder, tracked and pointed them off in the direcion of some more Nightsisters. Came across a bio-engineer who was looking for Rancors, so told him about the Rancor Cave in the west which has the Ancient Bull at the entrance and wished him luck. And so on.
I am gaining far more satisfaction by just heading off and seeing how my Ranger skills can help inpromptu.
Saying all that, I still wear my Master Ranger badge. I can understand why people may be frustrated that I wear a badge but am generally not available for public hire. I just wear it because I'm really proud of it. I love being a Ranger and I can't help but want to wear the badge that goes with it.
I think I'm just at the stage now where I want to use my character's skills and experience purely on her terms.
So a nightmare you couldn't get a Ranger and to be fair it was quite unlucky I think.

Well to me the state of ranger class in SWG as left much to be desired. I made master ranger somewhat early in the game around the time player cites were released and stayed on till I retired recently. When the novality of making credits, finding rare spawns and seeing what lays in the middle of nowhere nothing much remains. I was the only ranger I know that is still a ranger or stayed a ranger out of a decent amount of people. The bigest fall back is that a good amount of people feel that the skill points could be used in other areas. At first you drop master ranger, then trapping, and so on and so forth.
Me I walked away as a master ranger/rifleman and would not have it anyother way. The hunt was fun while it lasted but all good things come to a end.

Heya A'ier,
sorry to be on different server as I'm specialized in corelian avian, even if not master ranger yet. I could have helped you certaintly and for lower reward! I don't care for money, as in real life (and no I'm not rich!)
Yes I have to agree with other ranger, I'm getting bombarded of tells for area tracking, jedi tracking, krayat tracking.
My first tracking for a ppl was the following, just some days ago:
guy: "hi, are u ranger?"
me: Yes, you can search me in that way, so I'm ranger"
guy: "are u Master Ranger?"
me: "not yet, sorry, as u can see in your search results, but I can track very well"
guy: "ah ok, but can u track krayat dragons for me?"
me: "sure I can, but I can't garantee the results as they're rare"
guy: ok, let's meet in Bestine
me: Bestine? Are u sure? I never found a kayat there ... lol. Man, I'm on KG POI, here's the place for that job"
guy: I come to that POI, right?
me: yes I can wait for u for a little as I'm hunting here
guy: I'm coming rather now! Wait for me
me: sure I'll wait for you ...
after about 70-80minutes ...
guy: Hi, are u still there?
me: Yes, I'm still hunting here waiting for u
guy: I'm coming, just arived in Mos Entha
me: mos entha? you have to come other 4k meters NE to meet me
guy: sorrry I have no speeder and no money for the shuttle
... damit that guy did Bestine-Mos Entha running!
me: why did't u ask me some money for the ticket, it's crazy to run so far
... no replay for other 30min ...
guy: sorry I died and cloned 3 times in Mos Teike trying to get there, no way
me: omg, you have to grow up a little, are you just new?
guy: yes my 3rd day here
me: ok, u did great for now, this place is too dangerous for you. Tell me again next week ... and this is a smal tip for your effort!
/tip "guy" bank 25000
... after 10min ...
guy: hey u have to know what happened, I have 25k money and I can't explain this
me: really? 25k is a lot! Maybe the force is strong in you!
guy: yes I want to be a jedi and I'll be in one week
me: mmm ... one week is not so easy to get that, belive me, but gl in anycase
... no more reply ...
That's just copy and past of my first tracking session: It costed to me only 25k sob!
I have fun this way ...

Dunno if Ranger is a broken occupation(cause of countless revamps),or ever been"useful"in terms of standing out, inthe first place, but I do know I love it anyways:smileyhappy
I`ve only played SWG for 1.5month now,and Ranger even less ofcourse)If u want to become a Ranger,do it!.Not for the things we get...(or rather dont),but for the share fun of it.That said,we wouldent cry if we got more useful skills
Like Fred_Skinner sais,and it`s TRUE:Ranger is not a proffesion,it`s a lifestyle

"Im finding it more and more often that players find iteasier to blow someone off with a snide remark, than to answer a sincere question."
Thats true on other forums. Rare here. Grain of salt my dear....with that said...=)
Last night I was offered 1 million to find a Graul Marauder. Rare. But tempting offer, so I set out. An hour later I give up in anger, that and becaouse half an hour into it friends called me to go hit corvette (never done before). During the search, the /tells I sent to the person were ignored. But 30 minutes after I gave up, including telling the guy I was giving up, I get a ******* tells you, "Any luck?". So ya the ground rules are now going to be set in motion.
I would have to agree with one of the posters, I am not into harvesting so much, but I love helping others, so I will continue to take track missions. And my rules are similar mostly:
1) Group with me. At least stay on the planet with me, for the love of God talk to me, give me SOME enjoyment.
2) However, do not come with me while I track, stay within 5km or so. (this is because i concur with others, I hate saying "Nope nothing on track" and 4 seconds later we are getting attacked by huurtons. It's just not conducive to people hoping a ranger is worht the million offers.) =)
3) Set a time limit. Any pay accordingly. 1 million to find it?or what? Oh and I hold rights to stop anytime. (I would not stop after 10 minutes and let anyone down, but always give 110% for a good chunk of time).
4) There is a time fee, provided the target is found or not. No need if the target is found. But if I look for 3 hours, and even if the target is not located, you still employed my time, to perform a job that requires skills, and skill to use. (a rare animal or person tracker should be quite an accomplished cartographer for example =P)
Example: When you were hiring a person for 100k an hour, then 200k....perhaps modify that. You pay them 100k an hour (they could make vastly more doing solo groups missions / grind harvesting). But you set a target. You want X number of resources? Once you pass that then the big fee comes into play. 100k per hour + 500k for objective completed...for example. So 3 hours work you pay out 800k. =)
It has been said a plethera of times. Tracking is just not worth a ranger's time. Its boring. Unfortunetely, more often than not, it yields little results it seems. However if you include a ranger in some fun activity, be it that conversation skill you spoke of, or hunting (we are often alone and welcome the odd partner every now and then) or deal with them, aka free clothing if a tailor, discounts on some camo/maskscent tapes, or nice slices on weapons, or the best yet, friendship, you will not only save your credits, but have a friend that is loyal. After all, read this forum, the threads, and you'll see that loyalty and kindness oozing out =).

If it was worth your time to hunt Corellian avian spawn, why wouldn't it be worth my time to hunt them?
And grouped with you, I lose 40% of my harvest.
Starting to make sense?
100k an hour? I made more than that after I found a spawn site for devil gulginaws and carrion spats - 6k in 90 mins at 110cpu. You do the math. And I sure as heck would not share where I was, it was a virtual gold mine for me.
Anyhow, personally, I do not track for pay - unless it is something I know I can find in 15 mins or less and you are paying me for an hour or any part of that hour, and my job ends at the first spawn we ( me ) find.
Just my opine
JB
JB seems to have hit a major point here. Though it's not always about the money... the money makes it worth it. The penalty we recieve while hunting is a major deterent to group harvesting. I personally hate harvesting in a group because it forces me to take that resource hit.
As far as tracking goes? I've taken my share of tracking jobs. The some tend to be impatient... "Have you found one yet?" some just don't understand ... "What do you mean it takes time... just track one!" and some are just plain lazy ... "can you go find one while I grind faction?" In the end I don't find tracking jobs to be fun at all. As a result I only track for friends these days. I use areatrack when I'm in between lairs and mission terms to see if the creatures I'm hunting (and their higher yield buddies) are anywhere nearby.

I don't mind group hunting, but only with my guild mates. Usually one of them (armorsmith) needs certain hides or bones, orif I havean order to fill, and we can collect more faster as a group even with the 40% reduction. We just give the harvest to the one that needs it.
However, if it isn't a guild thing then I don't want to group because that 40% is a lot then.

Since its somewhat related to this thread, the last few days i have been compelled to make the following statement:
Contrary to popular beleif, Rangers ARE NOT as rare as some people may insinuate. Infact, their one notch below commonplace, or at least thats my experience. I see them all the time, both in and out of town.

Actually the camps exp is only 150k and another 36k from the scout prof.
It isn't difficult to get this exp.
1)just put camps with groups of ppl to obtain the maximum exp in less then 5min
2)there is a loop crafting macro u can find in the architect forum to do all the exp crafting camps in practical mod. You only need some 50k hide, 30k bone and 30k metal. Consider the exp is double the res used + 10% in practical mode.
Actually I used a combination of the 2 methods. Afeter I did Master ranger I went on using camps to take a rest and to heal my wounds. In this way I have an extra wild-surv exp of other 30k.
I think that without cheating and paying a lot AP is still the difficultest exp to gain!

You ask why we are so rare.Almost 200K offrontiering XP. The tediousness of it, tends to weed out the weak of heart.
