Totally agree, and I hope that's not how I came off in what I said. I also was just trying to compare skill point costs, and the "usefulness/uniqueness" of the profession.

Sorry if I shed on you too much during all the hugging.
And about the drool too.
And don't worry, I'm a Master Creature Handler, all my fleas are very well behaved.
And I agree with Phen that Doctor is a good analogy for discussing skillpoints spent for abilities recieved, but we shouldn't let it leak into the suggestion that we don't need those abilities to be combat-related.

The four trees of Medic are:
First Aid (injury treatment)
Diagnostics (injury treatment speed)
Pharmacology (medical skill use)
Organic Chemistry (crafting)
In Doctor you have:
Wound Treatment Speed
Wound Treatment
Medicine Knowledge
Medicine Crafting
While it looks like the Doctor trees are all advanced versions of the medic trees, 2 of them are not. Wound Treatment and Wound Treatment Speed affect wound damage (black bars) and the delay in the application of wound packs, enhance packs, and resurection kits. Firt Aid and Diagnostics affect injury damage (white bars) and the delay in the application of stimpacks and state cure packs.
That small difference along with the already well documented *useful* special skills Doctor's are given defines the difference between Doctor/Medic and the current Ranger/Scout to me.

I recently started a new char [got bored with the old one] and am grinding my way through Ranger and Rifleman. What I think is this:
1. Nobody should be better than a Master ranger at PvE. Just take a US Marine with an M16-A2 and send him on a survival hunt in the Yukatan. The point is that Soldiers aren't automatically hunters. Why the heck should a strait BH be better fighting a Rancor than a Master Ranger? How about pistoleers? Haven't seen to many people hunting bears with 38's.
2. Make Marksman Rifle tree a requirement for ranger and add a lot of Ranger specials to rifle with the appropriate accuracy and conealment. Make rifleman better at PvP and Rangers better at PvE.
Bad idea, not all rangers are rifleman, some like to get in close and beat stuff up with there hands. Any addition of combat skills to ranger needs to effect ALL combat classes used with ranger. Proberly the best way would be for a "To hit" and a Damage modifyer(2x damage normal but 5x damage on first strike as we are the hunting masters, we know where the creatures heart is and where its most vunerable)scattered through the entire ranger tree to stop dabblers.

Here's my idea: At novice Ranger we get a 10% bonus to creature damage and a small bit of damage mitigation. As we move up hunting, we get Alternating to-hit and damage bonuses. As we move up exploration we get alternating mitagaion and toughness bonuses. At the end of it all, we should get almost double damage. We should also get specials usable against NPC's, Creatures AND players. (These are basic specials, in other words)
Basically I say we go w/ Owen Lars' ideas (plus the additions I made to it lol) and add creature damge, creature to-hits, creature toughness and creature damage mitigation, esentially turning us (w/ an Elite Master Combat prof.) into the ultimate creature hunters, and also allow us to have some cool specials that, in theory, could be used in PvP.
double-you oh oh tee. = w00t.
