Thread: Why should Rangers be able to throw traps while mounted on a creature?

He is right. But the trap itself is unable to kill the creature. It will only take it down to 1 mind.

Still though, this is all 'theoretical', in practice you'd be long dead (if it were a DB creature if all you were using was, say, spurs and a cdef weapon) before you'd do any 'lethal damage'.

Don't you think so?

No. I go out unbuffed and unarmored and solo CL 50 mobs right now. I have to be careful and I'm not quite using only a CDEF but something in the 20-30 range is definately doable with Master Ranger and no other skills. Using just spurs won't work very well on anything over level 10 but using mainly phenacine, glow wire, andadhesive mesh you can solo most stuff out there with just Master Ranger. It takes forever but, if you have the inventory space, you can do it.

Okay, how many others are like him?

Probably none. But most people don't use credit dupes and the like either.

Personally, I think the mounts are too limited as well. But I don't think you are focusing the argument in the right direction. Right now, everyone is severly limited in what they can do on a mount (and not just fighters).

I personally think that the cowboys roping cattle is the best real world argument here. The cowboy TRAPS the cattle using his rope. And he does it from a mount. So we havea real world example of it working.

Why should we be allowed to in game? I don't know. I'd personally say it should be more of a CH skill, even if it would be nice to have it. They are the ones who live with their pets.

I agree with your post. I've been frustrated with the way this thread went. I didn't want to interact with it so much I just wanted to set it going, however there were some posts that did take the argument in the wrong direction which I feltI had to deal with.

As for it being more of a CH skill, well yes that's a reasonable argument. The problem is that CH's don't need the trapping line of scout, so there's no guarentee they'll actually have any trapping skills, while it's us lot who are the experts with traps. I'd enhance that statement by saying that given our level of creature knowledge, it's the rangers who should come second to creature handlers when it comes to an affinity with animals (and hence operating as one).

I think the best breakdown would be something like this:

Rangers can use specials and traps while mounted. Why? Simple. AS great hunters, we know more about creatures than any other proffession other than CH. Our creature knowledge allows us to keep our pets soothed, since we know so much about them.

CH's should be able to use their creatures specials while mounted. Why? They're creatures handlers. and a bear can still bite you if he's got someone on his back. makes sense to me.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

I'd go along with that.

In fact, I've never understood why (creature handlers at least) can't get their pets to at least performed ranged attacks while they're mounted on them.

same here. I sort of expected CHs to be able to attack using their creatures whilst mounted.

I supose it may have come down to how mounts are implemented why it wasnt possible to do this.

Two more things -

I solo mobs around level50 with no armor and/or buffs. Level 25 is simply boring. Level 40 is somewhat of a challenge. 50 and up is fun. Same critters, more HAM or more of em = more XP and bigger harvests. Oh, and it scares noobs to have them with you and you take on a level 40 lair. Gotta pass the test to get in the guild.

And maybe, just maybe, at the Master level, should we be allowed to trap or use specials with our weapons. But how is a TKM gonna use specials mounted ? whaaa ping don't work from the back of a kaadu. And will the creature stop, like we do, when we toss a trap?

Thngs to ponder.

That is precisely why I started this thread. Calc already made a thread about using specials while mounted ona pet. The idea clearly has 'problems' with combat professions as per your example. Therefore I started this thread as an alternative. Not counting traps as a special, but more like a ranger-specific ability (note i'm not saying weapon), that why shouldn't we use traps while mounted becuase it isn't going so far as to make all combat specials available while mounted, but just for us throw stuff at creatures!

The specials issue is easily resolved-- just let us TKM's shoot chi out of our eyes while mounted. I don't think it would be especially game-breaking if I could pull a Lo Pan from atop a cu pa. Say, any of you ladies out there have green eyes?
