Thread: Retiring Master Ranger

Speaking of Ranger/Software Developer combos, I've got two cents on this thing:

Doesn't SOE use a revision control system? We have the same policy at work that several of you have mentioned about not taking a vacation immediately after releasing a major update. But, in cases where a minor update caused major problems, and the pertinent developer was not available it wasn't that big of a deal to back out the changes and make a new build. I assume there are other people besides Green who are capable of making a build.....

Guys I dumped all my Ranger boxes like a week ago and I don't miss them one bit . This profession ... I dunno . Seems to me like it's MONTHS away from being anything apealing . I'm pretty confident that it's going to take at least a month to fix what was broken in the last batch of changes , by then there will surely be other things broken and I dunno , just the whole way this thing has been done left a real sour taste in my mouth .

Hope you are all getting some fun out of the profession , if not I would suggest dumping it quick and trust me , the other elite professions are so much better it's a joke . Good luck all

Peace

Best of luck in what ever profession you chose.

I actually thought about giving up rifleman for fencer, you think you have issues LOL.

I love being a Ranger. I do. But I have to admit having thoughts of surrendering the class as well.

I am torn.

1. If I feel like a trip to Yavin IV to check out the Sith Temple, I have to plan weeks in advance for camo kits I am not confident in, if the resources are available (as in the case of Lok flora). I don't need the camo kits, understood, but if that was truly the case, why keep it?

2. We are a support class and points are needed elsewhere. I have to get 1 or 2 tress in something else even to survive PVE, let alone any PVP.

3. It would be nice to have some sort of specialized weapon for rangers - something with additional bonuses to creatures. It just looks weak with my Master Ranger running around with a DX-5 pistol in his hand. At least the T-21 looks impressive and respectable for a "big game hunter".

4. I never use traps, but I like knowing they are there to use. But then, I only use the scout traps.

5. Mask scent seems to get weaker for me compared to Master Scouts and Novice Rangers. Almost like it degrades as camo kits get more advanced. This weekend, though, I managed to survive with it. I'm still very nervous travelling around hard planets by myself when I never feared it.

6. Areatrack works great for me. I would hate giving this up. I can deal with some little things like shops and vendors showing up as -1 and such. Animals have been accurate when they are on the planet.

7. Camps. Very cool as always. This is my biggest "accomplishment" since it was so tough to get. I feel like I did something. I will hate to give this up.

8. Examine. Another tool I don't think I could easily live without.

I do not want to give it up, I know it will improve. I like all you guys. I am seeing less and less options though.

New class: Guidance Counselor?

1. You get more bang for your buck using camo kits on other folks who don't have good or any /maskscent ability. That's the nicest thing about them IMHO.

2. Yep, by design. Ranger, as well as scout, were designed to "go with something else" or "be a requirement for something else". Neither is intended to be standalone.

3. No it wouldn't, see #2. Ranger is a support class to augment another ability. You want a big @ss weapon, get a profession that uses one.

4. If you choose to only use Scout traps, that's your choice. Personally,I use the AoE traps all the time in addition to the scout traps.

5. Myskill is +100 and /maskscent rarely ever breaks for me. And when it does, I either fight what smelled me out (heh, I like a little excitement once in a while) or I reset it in a mere few seconds if nothing comes. Maskscent is not intended to be an invisibility spell so don't be surprised when it doesn't act like one.

6. Agreed, /areatrack has improved my hunting ability tenfold enabling me not to wander nearly so much looking for specific prey. I'm sure the future /track command will be even better.

7. Camps are our way of saying "Look what I can do." Yes, functionally scout camps are goign to be pretty much as viable until they finally make ranger camps actually repel creatures. Then you'll be happy you have the advanced camps.

8. As a scout and even a novice ranger I rarely used /examine. But as a Master Ranger, with all that info and now that in many cases that info actually matters to me, I have found this to be an extremely useful skill.

I understand, Alton, you Imperial slime :

I had to drop it. Frustration to much, and I can't play a frustrating game. I get enough of that at work, this is supposed to be fun.

Despite all the broken stuff, Ranger was a blast until 09.08.03 patch.

Hated it ever since, but took me awhile to drop it.

I really appreciate all the comments people have added, for right now, I'm deciding which trees to keep and which to abandon. I'm torn about the traps tree, I have read some of the upcoming changes and static traps that work on animals or NPCs really sound great. If they let some of those traps work on PCs, that would be incredible. However, right now the tree is absolutely worthless.

I will probably get rid of the Wayfaring (mask scent, /conceal and crawl speed) skill tree first. Although I think they will improve it eventually, that will likely be far down the line. Camps are really not worth it either, the sad part was the ridiculous amount of work to get Survival skill.

I'll likely get rid of the top box of Tracking, I'd still get most of my (nerfed) harvesting skills and keep the trapping in hopes that they make that interesting.

With that, I'll have enough to get Master Bounty Hunter with one skillpoint left over. Is anyone else going this route?

Psycho,

Something tells me that the release of the patch wasn't really his call. And when you have so many different things going into a patch like that - especially one that had been in test for nearly two weeks (granted, not a great test), I'm not sure who is to blame there.

Plus, I know that he'd had this vacation schedule since before the Correspondent reports came out, so if they decided to release that patch right then, that's not his fault.

My fear is that I'll dump Ranger (because Master Scout is pretty much all you need)and they'll turn around and nerf Scout while finally giving Ranger its due.

And this is killing me because I'm 2 bricks away from Master Ranger (I don't grind) and I'd like to have achieved Mastery of some profession in the 10 weeks I've been playing this game. And to make matters worse, I recently dumped all my Rifle skills to free up points for Ranger. What a mistake that was.

Well, I've been laying low, but I'm not dropping my master status. I'm a casual player due to time constraints and I don't have the patience to crawl back up a line again.

I haven't been playing much at all lately, due to the harvesting nerf (gathering resources just isn't as fun as it used to be knowing how much material I used to be able to pull in at master), masked scent/camo being all wonky (sorry, I've had enough of voritors warping in on me from 64+ meters) and I won't even get started on rifle issues.

I dunno... things lost a bit of appeal after the latest patch.

And I STILL can't catch a friggin fish to save my life!!!

I hit master ranger a few weeks ago and it just seems like a huge waste of valuable skill points. I have started selling off my skills to free up room for medic, pistoleer and CH. Hopefully I won't feel so useless in PvP anymore. The only thing I'll miss are the camps, and that's not that big of a deal. Someday rangers will probably be fixed, and I may come back...I've banked a ton of XP just in case, but right now there are better places to spend 63 skill points.
