Thread: Ranger in PvP
You can Master Ranger and one combat class (Pistoleer, for example) and have around 4-18 points remaining. I agree, that is pretty powerful combo.

Also, what better person to have PVP than a Ranger to fight off the pets of a creature handler? Our traps will work on CH pets right?
I've been assured that the traps will work on pets.
Just the fact that we can chose a combat class and our traps work on pets is enough, IMO, to make Rangers an asset to PvP.
I'd love to see more stealth and strategy in the PvP arena. I see so much potential in a city for sneaking around corners, jumping on balconies, etc. Right now, the radar seems to remove structural advantages though.
I'd never ask to be a PvP god. However, I see a definite PvP support role emerging.

There is a definite advantage to being able to sneak into the enemies ranks and find out numbers, positions and plans without being noticed. Taking us off the radar and crawling in will greatly aid in this, even if we never fire a shot. Not that most PvP is this organized yet, but we could hope someday it will be.
As is I still crawl into PvE environments with mask scent so that I can tell my group where best to launch our first attack. Really looking forward to camo kits!

I'm not a ranger, but I'd like to see traps work in pvp. Could make the ranger an answer to the current pet wars. It would also be nice if some traps worked on players as well.
In addition a master ranger /conceal ability to cloak a ranger on radar would be absolutely awesome. Perhaps they could balance it by allowing you to be masked from radar at all ranges, except if the masked ranger enters combat or is manually targeted (ie. somebodysees him and double clicks on him)by you or a group memeber.
In addition, players who have the masked ranger within their forward cone of vision automatically make a perception check every so often, with bonuses and negatives given to the perception check based on things like movement, posture andplayers mind stats.
PvP needs rangers!

These crafters don't "kill" for XP.....We (scouts/Rangers)need to "kill" to get scout XP and harvest, we need to harvest (kill) in order to craft traps (which we use to kill again)and build camps.....canRangers survey for hide and bone? (I think not)....at present wemight bethe PvE killing machine. We certainly don't sit around and craft all day long.
We are completely different to someone who surveys....we kill...we use traps and conceal to kill."
You're right - we kill.......critters.
Not people. Not NPCs (unless we're aggroed, or doing faction stuff).
We get no XP for killing humanoid NPCs or other players. None of our traps work on them (except the upcoming trip wire). The primary - from the mouth of the Scout dev himself - role for Scouts and Rangers is PvE. We have enough skills left over to get a combat profession. 99% of us have one.
I don't disagree with you - I wouldn't mind being more useful in PvP myself. But that's really not what we were designed for.

This keep going in a circular discussion...
we know will kill critters...the point is we "should" have the ability to be able to use traps to mame players and NPCs and get trapping xp for it. (I am assuming we will get the Pet Trap thing sorted out)I can accept no harvesting on players and NPCs thus no scout xp. PvP will not skew the develoment of the ranger skill tree. It is fun for some of us...that's all.
I am notsuggesting the Primary design of from the Devs is wrong, (PvE explore with a saftey advantage) butthere needsto be a secondaryrole devloped for the sake of pvp game play.
B - you seem to be closer to the devs more than me or the rest of us......but the devs should think about accepting a secondary role, and someone needs to tell them.
I have said too much on this forum I think we all get the point...I will leave you all with some lyrics I now call the "Ranger PvP Song" (aka Drawing Flies by Sound Garden)
ah hum...
"Sitting here like univited compnay....wallowing in my own obscenities....I share a cigarette with negativity...sitting here like wet ashes....with X's in my eyes and drawing flies"
In my opinion we NEED a pvp role. What exactly is there to do when you have become a Master Ranger? Nothing! We don't need xp anymore so all that is left is PvP, it is the same with all PvP games. What would be the benifit of killing creatures if you don't need the xp, there isn't phat lewt in the game and there aren't AAs. Some artisans play a HUGE role in PvP, they supply the weapons, armor and buffs, while others offer a supporting role to those artisans.
I really like the fun factor of Rangers but as it stands I am seriously reconsidering. Seriously what is there to do once you have spent all your skill points?
Brylden,
There's the ENTIRE rest of the Star Wars universe out there after you master Rangering.
Have you seen every planet?
Have you run every POI and Theme Park?
Are you an Imperial General? Do you an AT-ST?
Did you unlock your force sensitive slot?
Have you met the Emperor? Princess Leia? Han Solo and his walking flea market?
Did you complete Cries of Alderaan?
Did you join a PA? Or better yet, start one?
C'mon - once you max out your character the game BEGINS. You can't quit worrying about XP and just play the game the way it was intended. If you want to PvP you can go master your combat profession. If not, there's a huge amount of content that's out there.
You don't need artificial "leveling" goals to have fun in this game. Just be creative. ![]()

Stop the whining already. Why do we need special "Ranger" skills for PvP?? How many of you don't have at least a specialty in some weapon, or two? Raise your hands... way to go stupids. Now go and get one.
Combat is not running up to some clown and pistol whipping him into the next county. It is, or let me put it this way, should be, a planned operation - hit with the heavy stuff from a distance, take out as many of them as you can quickly, when they advance, fire quicker... and when all else fails, go hand to hand. Cardinal rules - pick your fights wisely, fight on ground of your choosing, exploit your strengths and their weaknesses - read a book by Sun T'su.
How many battles have I seen work this way...oh....NONE. But as my good friend Murphy says...No plan survives combat.
I am a Ranger, first and foremost. I got tired of people giving me crap about being one, so I trained my tushie off and got some combat skills. I will admit I could have used the skill pts in a lot better places, but hey, I did what I felt I had to do.
Again, stop with the whining, use what you got and if you ain't got, go get. Use your head for something besides a spot to place that stupid looking headwrap!!! (they are the ugliest things, them and the warm hats)

Master Scout, closing in on Master ranger but camping is so freaking boring
Pistoleer - 1-1-0-1
Rifleman
Medic 2-0-0-2
Artisan
Ranger are the god of PVE ? Currently it is a joke .....
First Template :
Get Novice Scout ... some pistol skills and go Overt Imp .... Get 2 AT-ST ...
Then you will be able to harvest 5 to 10 time more than a master Ranger in the same period of Time ... and will be able to Kill critters that no Master Ranger should able to kill. You will be able to survive a long time in Wild area ....
Second Template :
Get Novice Scout Skill ... Master Pistoler or carabineer... And a lot of medical skills (to be able to spawn a lot of specials between 2 heal) ... then you will be able to harvest as much as Master Ranger. You will be able to survive a long time in Wild area ....
Third Template :
Get BH And Medical Skills ... And you will be able to harvest a minimum of 2 time more than a master ranger. You will be able to survive a long time in Wild area ....
Sowe cannot consider Ranger as a hunter since many hybrid professions can do much and better than us ... We cannot also be the god of survival in wild areas since we cannot have both good Medical skills and good weapon specialization (Can only be a master ina range weapon, and eventually Novice Medic if we decide to surrender Marksman Ranges Weapon tree).
Ranger is an Elite profession .... But as long we want to play solo, we will never be the god of PVE.
The only thing that will maybe give us some advantages in PVE will be conceal, tracking and trapping abilities and maybe some efficient camp ....At this time ... we will be the best group helper in PVE ....
Thisis my point of view.
Hak,
Rangers ARE the Gods of PvE - but you are right - the tactics that we use are not well adapted to being solo, without a combat skill.
I apologize if I've been operating under the assumption that you've been working on an elite combat skill to compliment your Rangering - it seems like for some of you, that's not been the case.

It looks like there will be a new role for Rangers in PVP groups after all. A new high level Overt Factional camp is in the works. For more info, look at my post HERE:
http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=ranger&message.id=8220
Each class has a role to play, and in PvP ours is going to be providing field base support, trapping pets and fighting alongside all the other grunts. I don't feel like I'm being shortchanged, and I don't see why anybody else does, either.
For my money, ranger is the most versatile and fun class out there.
Currently you can use your Field Base kits to provide cover. Especially if you're also a medic. I'm pistol so don't quite have that, but if you're a medic / ranger you are AWESOME for the team. That means you can walk up to wherever the Imps (aargh, ok, Rebs too) are, setup your base for cover, the riflemen stay in the base and you heal the players. I'm actually thinking of doing this after master pistoleer, but ran out of point between pistoleer / ranger. ![]()
If your team has low terrain negotiation you're invaluable for scouting ahead.
Also master ranger has +10 melee and +10 ranged defense. These are not bad defenses. Master Pistoleer gets +7 / +7.
We'll be much better soon though when:
-Traps work against faction pets.
-Camo is implemented. Even if it doesn't work against other players think how much easier it would be to run through red mobs while PvP'ing.
-Tripwires are put out for ambushes, hasty retreats.
- You can also put on your armor and martyr yourself through /rescue. Hmmm, it works with Nyms guards (as of last night) but not sure if it will work during declared PvP since patch to fix exploit. Beforefix I've used it succesfully. Gotta try it. If someone tries it please tell me if it works
That's all I can think of at mo.
