I think Shaw is right we need to push for something more in PvP or GCW but I tend to lean toward a PvE primary profession. And I too have seen multiple comments form people regarding the Dev's thoughts on traps for PvP beingfor BH if any get it. I could make a case for being able to use our traps in PvNPC, and I could also get talked out of it.
With a little minor editing Phenix1050 I could not have typed better myself the view I have for Rangers....

- I DON'T want to be a combat class that centers on PvP. Much like Squad leader, I want to fill a secondary role. This does not mean I don't want combat abilities that work in PvP. This means I want our contribution to be more along the lines of Squad Leader: you don't need one to attack a base, but it sure as heck helps.
-I would prefer to remain focused on PvE. I think that's what scouts do, and as a progression from scouts, Rangers need to remain in that vein. again, this does NOT mean I don't want PvP. It's just that I want PvP to be less important to us as a class. Also adding the use of our skill in Ranger Vs. Player creature
MY IDEAS ON THE ROLE OF RANGERS IN THE GCW
-Few combat proffessions are uber in the GCW. There are a few that will ultimately be awesome. Rangers, in my opinion, do not belong in this vein. Look at what JBMat says we can do now, just with areatrack. We can do recon like nobody's business. That's a nice thing to have. Commando and BH require more skill points as does Combat Medic they SHOULD be much better in PvP than Rangers. Doctors, while requiring the same skill points have a HUGE role in indirect PvP, we need to close the gap some.
-Rangers use all different combat proffessions to hunt animals. But that's the majority of the combat skills we should have versus another player. Like I said before, MINOR tweaks are a good idea. Giving us a combat bonus while out of a city if possible. Applying camo to PvP scenarios (stealth or no stealth, either way, it should make us harder to hit). These are PvP ideas that would give us more of a role in the GCW. How about camo hiding our Overt status until we enter battle, like a 5 (or more) minute timer after PvP or favtional PvNPC to re-Covert Cammo
-PvP and GCW are NOTthe same thing. I think that we should ask for skills that lend a hand more in the GCW than in direct PvP combat. The stealth skill is an AWESOME idea. I would love to see it implemented. But in one-on-one PvP, it still won't be a great skill to have. Even with the first attack, we'd lose in a fight with a TKM on more than one occasion. However, in the GCW, this is a great skill to have. Imagine setting up a perimeter of Ranger, all hidden w/ stealth skills. We recon, see who and how many are coming. we then let the enemy slip by us. When they move towards the base, we trap them in a cross fire. That's the kind of skills I think would be "Ranger" skills. Smart, tactic-heavy skills, like areatrack which can turn the tide of a battle through intelligence, not brute force. I agree and see above comment also
I would rather be a tactic-driven proffession, like Squad Leader, than be a proffession that has tons of attacks and huge damage. We should have some great abilities but require certain things to be in place to work, I don't want these to be spamable but MUST require tactics to use. A ranger-specific weapon would be cool, but again, we were designed as creature hunters. A weapon designed for us should do damage better to animals anyway. As for us being defenseless, I think our best defense right now is tactics and intelligence, and I would hate to see that change. As a group, we're pretty smart and inventive. Let's keep it that way

I would be very satisfied if we got what you guys suggested, then only thing I would change is the PvP/PvNPC traps issue. I know what the devs say know but if we don't try we wont have any chance at getting them at all.
I'm going to start the discussion of "if the devs would give us traps what would we want?". Our traps wouldn't be spamable in my mind. There would be either two types of traps or traps would have two purposes each. All the PvP traps would be ground based. The only traps we could throw or launch would be the one for creatures. For PvP our traps could be things like tripwires for warning you of an enemy approaching. Snares that would temporarily slow down an enemy so you could escape the area, our help in launching a surprise attack. Perhaps some sort of explosive trap that would do damage and make a player thing twice before persuing a ranger any further. We could have it so you could only put x number of PvPtraps in a given proximity to each other. We could also limit the number of PvP traps we could put down at one time.
These are just a starting point and I think we should at least play around with the idea, if we differentiate our traps enough from what a BH would have we might have a chance at changing the devs minds. Have fun with this, I personally haven't seen alot of discussion on what PvP traps would be but it is possible I've missed it.

I would like a claymore mine type trap for pvp. Hopefully they could make it about as deadly too. Course with buff's not sure how nice that would be. But yeah i just love imagining the damage a claymore could dish out right in front of a enemy base.
