Why are we screwed again?

we're not screwed... we could potentially face a screwing, but we're not screwed yet.

people are ACTING like we're screwed, but I don't remember seeing or reading anything that did little more than tickle my internal "red flag" system. most of those "almost" flags were directed to all non-combat profs in general, but since we're getting armor certs, I tend to believe that we're going to be included in the combat group, eventually.

wait, see, decide.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that armorsmith, weaponsmith, etc... needed full Mastered Artisan first. That would in essence not make us the only prof with this situation. Am I wrong?

There is no profession that needs master Artisan. You only need Engineering 4 for WS and AS. We are truely the last profession in the entire game that has a full novice mastery as a prereq.

For the time being my comments are related to Scout ... because climbing the Scout trees reflect climbing the Ranger trees.

  1. How is leveling ranger going while leveling your other professions?

    • My combat professions are leveling 2x as fast.

    • On average I'm getting >30xp for harvesting anything at and under level 4. As a result, so 3 kills = 100xp. That's 30 kill/harvests for the first box, 150 for the second, 300 for the third etc. Advancement in the "core" pre-req of most combat profs (i.e. the rifle tree in marksman) occurs 2x as fast. That's one tree of the combat pre-req. Ranger needs to collect 2x the amount of scout xp and is doing it at a significantly slower speed.

  2. Is Ranger making it easier to level combat professions?

    • No, In fact, Ranger is slowing down Combat profession leveling. Trapping is just something that needs to be done (the traps are pretty terrible) as a result they increase the time to get through any given engagement.

    • Harvesting is not really being effected by the combat pairing that I can see right now.

  3. Is it making it harder?

    • See my comments above.

  4. Are you having fun doing it?

    • I'm enjoying the challenge. We still need to see where things are going though.

Wow, this thread went a bit walkabout on us, eh?

OK, back to levelling, and a few observations: (this is c&p'd from a post I just dumped on the TC forum, but am dragging it back here while its still warm and dripping....)

Haven't worked on the math but here's how I'm seeing this CL/group ungroup thing:

On your own you are, say, lvl 5.

You should be able to easily beat creatures 1 lvl below you and get some xp, 2 below you and get less xp, 3 below and you might as well not bother.

You should be able to fight creatures of the same level as you and get decent XP, and up to two levels above but its going to get progressively more difficult to kill (due to healing, strenght of their attack, etc). You WILL be getting higher XP from the higher level kill, but you are going to have to work for it.

Now you group, and however the math works, you get a GROUP lvl of, say 10. -2 creatures are going to be ones that you'd not be able to kill on your own but the GROUP should be able to kill easily, so lower XP payout. +2 will be more challenging even as a group but the XP reward will be much higher. On your own you wouldn't even be able to look at this creature level.

This does mean however, that if you form a lvl 10 group and everyone goes after individual targets, you are going to end up dead. In effect this kills the current system of solo-grouping dead on its feet. The debate as to whther this is or is not a good thing isn't for this thread and no doubt will rage on for weeks elsewhere.

A significant element of the CU is the encouraging of co-operative play. Group dynamic is much more important now as you will want ot have a medic/doc with you rather than filling up on buffs at the starport and then being 'invulnerable' for the next couple of hours. You're going to have to protect the less combat able members of the group, such as medics and rangers if you want to have the benefits they bring to the group.

The smaller group size also means you have to be more careful in structuring your team. 8 elite combat profs will have a really HIGH group level, be able to dish out a lot of damage, but are also going to get hit back HARD and need to think about making a space for some support type players.

--- addenda ---

One MAJOR advantage I found to being in a group with people who were concentrating on gettng their combat skill... LOTS of harvestable corpses.

I pulled together a group of eight novice marks, all wanting to get to rifleman, carbineer or pistoleer, non doing ANY scout. Stood on the mound outside Espa and slaughtered the local wildlife. In effect, I had eight people killing stuff and just me, me, me harvesting. And it was good.

One major DISadvantage, you get a group of eight together, they go wandering off looking for higher level critters, die, whine, whinge, complain, drag angry mobs back into the cluster...

Working with eight people also geared towards harvesting was much more focused, but then again, I'm seriously biased towards all the forum rangers, lol.

Right. Haven't been able to play today cos of RL stuff and sleep, but I see the server is down for a pub update, so fingers crossed we'll be able to pick up a novice elite skill off the frogs when we get back on. (I'll bet that novice ranger won't be there tho...)

OK, folks who are testing. Because traps have been disabled I'd ask that everyone please submit a /bug during your next playsession. Make sure to let the Dev team know that the system is currently unavailable for testing.

Along the same lines, when you are leaving the CU testing and get the exit survey please be sure to make a note about the slow progression of Scouting XP. It seems way out of whack and deserving of a pass as soon as possible. Thanks,

Yes, and make sure you add that traps dont work and if you know why they are not or a specific problem with traps you want to report, slap it down under the abilities question at the end.

Owen, maybe in conjunction with these CU threads we can put together a "/bug this" thread to let people know what to bug when they log in.

If all the Ranger testers are bugging the same things they'll definitely get the point eh?

I think its a pretty safe way to go about getting attention to this stuff.

Well the bug thread in the cu boards is a primary source of the bugs in the current builds on a day to day basis. You only need one person to highlight a specific bug though and thats why tiggs encourages you to read the bug thread and only point out bugs that you can advance upon, provide alternative feedback or have not been stated yet.

Whilst its definatly worth making a thread highlighting the specific bugs, i was this to be done by the department heads. I want you to update your first posts and right down in bullet points what the current buggs are, what have been fixed by using the throughscores and bascially what the feedback is.

Ill be getting in touch with all the heads soon talking about this but if you want to make a start of updating your front post with the current bug list the please be my guest, it will help a great deal and shot the others how to set it out.

Hi guys

Started testing last night. It looks as if it has been mentioned already but in one 90 minute session, outside Mos Eisley, killing womp rats and the like - I scooted through

Rifles I, Rifles II, Ranged Support I. I am a third through Rifles III and halfway through Ranged Support II.

In that time, I have completed one box (Hunting I) of Scouting. Scouting XP needs a serious re-do.

I am mentioning it here as the CU: Skill Progression thread seemed to be most relevant but if someone can tell me where else would be pertinent to post, I will happily do so. Particularly places that devs read. I am a bit confused by the number of different threads going on.

I got the questionnaire after the first test (basically involved setting up a character) but it didn't come up when I did my 90 minute levelling session so I wasn't able to say my piece there as I had hoped.
