What would be the difference? Is Snare a "slow down" while Root a "stop completely"?
The way I believe it works in other games is that Root stops the mob at first and then the mob movement gradually moves up towards normal speed, whereas a snare is the opposite and eventually slows down the mob to a halt. I could be wrong.. but I think that's how it is in games such as Camelot.
I'd like to see a mez trap that is breakable upon damage done. This would get a group to work together to take out BAF's one at a time and make you plan out an attack. And we would be loved! hehe
So far nobody seems to have commented on the suggestion for the addition of a "throwtrap xxx" command. I for one would *love* this addition, glad to see that it will be presented to the devs!
However, this would clash with any experimetation changes to trap effectiveness or duration... Part of me would like to see experimenting to make traps more powerful; but I think that when weighing all of the pros and cons, I would prefer to have trap experimentation only affect charges/quantity, similar to camo kits. It just seems like it would be difficult to make high quality traps enough better than low quality traps to make the experimentation process worthwhile without either making low quality traps almost worthless or high quality traps overpoweringly good.
Another thing that I would like to see with traps is allowing them to be stackable. Again, this would be incompatible with quality/duration experimented traps. What are other folks thoughts on stackable traps? Would the stack size need to be limited to prevent "hoarding" massive numbers of traps without using much inventory space?
Thanks for the good discussion everybody!
"Im not really sure the dev's are going to appreciate asking for traps that affect people/humanoid NPC's. Thats not a rangers gig. Rangers are supposed to be masters of the environment and the flora/fauna therein. Hunting/killing/disableing intelligent humanoids is the realm of the bounty hunter. Theres starting to be a bluring of the abilities of these 2 classes, IMO. BH's want to be able to area track for people (landscape tracking from footprints, scent trail, etc. totally ranger ability) and now rangers want to be able to debuff humanoids. There has to be a line drawn."
Do not perceive to tell us how or what a ranger should do or be. This is Star wars, remember the ewoks on endor? They used traps to take down AT STs and Scout troopers. I suggest you read up on the antarian rangers as well, another part of star wars. Rangers have a place in pvp, and traps are one of those parts. Bounty hunters used devices like thermal detonators( for some reason this was given to commandos) Cable Launchers, poison darts, etc...the ewoks used ranger skills to accomplish what they did and the rebels were very grateful for it. Bounty hunters use high tech and weaponry to take their quarry, rangers use their environment( people or animals). We aren'tjust gamehunters, rangering is a military skill as well.
Rangers setup trip wire traps using things in the environment like logs, rocks, boulders, animal parts etc... Bounty hunters do not do this sort of thing. Rangers when it comes to pvp are guerilla fighters( refer to the antarian rangers). We setup ambushes using camoflauge and lay traps for unsuspecting enemies. We learn and perfect this craft on animals at first and upon mastery we learn to apply our trade on humanoids as well, take a look at the tracking branch, the last 2 boxes in trapping in scout refer to the traps as martial and elite martial design(martial means military, military deal with humanoids not animals) this means this level of trap should be effective on animal or humanoid alike.
ANTARIAN RANGERS. A para-military group based on several planets, including Toprawa, they were formed to assist and aid the Jedi Knights. They were trained to be masters of any environment, in order to help the Jedi in any way possible. During the Clone Wars, whole groups of Antarian Rangers were killed off, and many of the survivors scattered and went underground.
I don't see anywhere where it says they were a bunch of rabbit hunters who spent their time skinning animals and sitting around camp fires. This is star wars and the classes should reflect that as much as possible. I think you are referring more to the scout class because that is more inline with what they do, a ranger is a whole lot more.
Oh and Bounty hunters use tracking droids, i've never ever heard of a star wars bounty hunter following tracks in the wild, using his scent recognition, his hearing to listen for vehicles etc...While some bounty hunters may possess tracking ability or knowledge of traps, they have learned this skill from the ranger class, you know that other 33 points you have?
Gallandro was the most notorius gunfighter in the star wars universe, he was legendary and he also worked as a bounty hunter from time to time, he was a pistoleer/bounty hunter. Stop thinking so cookie cutter, you can't have it all for free, and not every bounty hunter possessed the same skills as every other bounty hunter though there were a few they shared in common, these skills trapping and tracking are not among the core skills of a bounty hunter as they tend to use high tech and conventional weaponry to accompish this, they also hire mercenaries from time to time to help them on particulary difficult bounties. Boba fett, dengar, bossk, 4LOM, IG88, Zam Wessel, all did this when it became necessary, they didn't always work alone.
I am a ranger, and i am hired from time to time in game by bounty hunters to track their marks for a fee.You can't have it all or the rest of us have no purpose.
One last thing in response to the bounty hunter opposition.
To be a really good ranger you need weapon skills, we can choose from the many elite professions to do this. I am going Master Pistoleer/ranged support specialist/Master ranger. This is a very point costly template.
Even if rangers get this ability, a bounty hunter can still get it too. You have to master scout the same as we do, you have 33 points left over after mastering bounty hunter. Ranger isn't a cheap class to take, master scout is a prerequisite for it. It costs us 140 points to master it. 33 points is more than enough to pick any line in Ranger and dabble into another line of ranger you want.
A elite combat profession plus ranger will not even with traps and tracking = the killing power or efficiency of a bounty hunter, though we won't be an easy mark for you as we do possess some of the same skills. if a bounty hunter takes trapping or tracking well it puts things more in the bounty hunters favor against us.
Bounty hunters do not have unique skills they have a broad range of skills based or borrowed from many other professions in the star wars universe. This combination makes you very very deadly, a ranger is very formidable in his own right, whether he's a CH/ranger or a pistoleer/ranger or what have you.
Yes i know you won't have many points to take any medical skills but neither do I. After mastering pistoleer and ranger with ranged support specialist i will have 4 points left, not enough to buy anything else.
Ranger is not an artisan class, it is not a class who has nothing to do with combat, we have to fight to advance inall of our lines but one, we have to kill to gain scouting experience and trapping experience. We are not touchy feely smell the pretty flowers and hug the trees class. We are a para-military hunter/trapper/tracker/guerilla style fighterwith survival skills to match. In the wild we are your superior. Ranger is a combat support class, it pairs well with any combat class in the game, you cannot be a ranger without combat skills. Not to mention we are based off of a group of people in the star wars universe which were not simple game hunters.
We have a place in pvp, we shouldn't be shut out and relegated to pve animal hunting. If this is the case then more and more and more rangers will surrender their skills and more and more people will not even consider taking the profession. We are right now a one dimensional profession, we need more meat or they might as well remove the class. It's too costly to take to be so one dimensional.
When i am done i won't have enough points to even take any medical skills so why should you get to have points leftover for them? Even if i dropped ranged support specialist i wouldn't have enough points to get any decent medical skills. So again Why should we be shut out?
Thank you Keito, you're absolutely right.
If PvP is suppose to be Star Wars' "End Game" and I, as a Ranger, am notallowed to have any PvP potential, does that mean that I have no place in the End Game?
If so, why would I continue playing a Ranger?
I am not a PvP player (yet), but something about Rangers having no PvP ability strikes me as wrong. Rangers in every game I have ever played have had Player vs Humanoid/ Player ability.
Rangers, from the rugged Grizzly Adams mountain man to the U.S. Army Rangers, have combat abilities that can and are put to very good use against Humans.
Even the Jedi needed us and they were more powerful than bounty hunters.
My ideas for new traps
1.Pit traps, a covered camoflauged pit that a ranger would lure his prey or foe into, designed to trap animals( immobilizing them) or slow down the advancement of enemy troops. Maybe two types, spiked traps and traps designed just to hold a creature or humanoid for a time.
2. Trip wire traps, designed to set off other traps such as a phecnacine dart, logs, boulders etc... chained to it. Need alot of variety here, type should depend on the foe or creature, AT ST/Animal/Humanoid/etc...
3.Baited lure traps, traps designed to lure animals and cause damage and snare them, slowing their movement and causing pain, possibly a dizzy or stun effect along with a snare effect.
I agree that we need traps that effect NPCs, CH pets and/or players.
If I could only have one of these then I would say CH pets. They are creatures you know ![]()
Traps are one of the coolest things we have an it is the logical extention into PvP for us.
Keep the good ideas flowing!!! ![]()
