this is going into the Outdoorsman 3.0 proposal. Don't wait! Reserve YOUR copy of the Outdoorsman 3.0 today. Guaranteed to raise your hopes about the possibilities for the Ranger profession. No refunds.
(Note: the Outdoorsman 3.0 proposal is already in the works-- it will incorporate changes that will be made in the CURB...so of course, I can't actually FINISH it until the final product hits live)

No need for a launcher. The trap is its own launcher.
While it's being described as a KD trap, that's the effect, it's really an entanglement device. Two comparatively small weights on a length of high tensile cord (think guitar wire inside parachute cord), youjust spin one weight round your head to build up momentum then fire it across the legs of the target.
The target's own forward momentum is, literally, what brings about it's downfall. (Imagine how fast you'd go over if your bootlaces were tied together while you were sitting? Now imagine how stunned and disoriented you'd be if that happened while you were going at full tilt...
Yup, you winced at the thought of those skinned knees and palms, dincha?
Earlier joking aside (thanks for the chuckles, btw) I really, really like this as a suggested trap.
Artwork: minimal, couple of small balls with a roll of cord.
Logic: almost every hunting race has a version of this. It is an incredibly primitive and superbly effective weapon.
It also helps address one of the deficiencies in our trapping tree without forcing the issue over AoE or stun/dizzy.
Canon / Precedent, well, I guess you could cite the Battle of Hoth scenes where they use a bolas trap on ATAT's. Am sure the ewok use them on ATST too.
And, even though we know they'll never let us trap players, just imagine being able to trip somebody at range and getting maybe a couple of combat turns free to flee/strike back...
Oh, and Calc, course I've tried this out. Didn't need anyone gullable though, I'm an older brother, lol.

That's not so bad, as a rifleman, a wire mesh trap is of little use to me, but a glow juice trap is a lot more useful. Point being: there are different traps for different combat types. However, a bola knock down could be of use because you could knock down the target long before it gets in your normal melee range (even more so after the combat revampI suspect).
I know. I wasn't trying to piss on everybody's parade-- it would be a great trap for a lot of you. It's just hard for me to excited about this idea, because we get so very little dev attention, and if this was the one bone they threw us, it would leave many of us out in the cold. (Man, did I just set some kind record for most cheesy metaphors/euphemisms crammed into the least amount of space?)
Oh, and knocking something down before it closed to melee range wouldn't help me-- I'd have to cover the distance myself, and end up losing my window of increased damage. It would help if I needed to get away, but phec darts already do that.

I realy like this idea, and imo it wouldnt be to powerful, because many profs have KD and Dizzy isnt working on animals.
PS: As far as i know its called bola with A and not with O.

A perfect 10 for that reversal Fodder
Good form and an excellent landing.
I like it. Enraged Durni running at you and you sling a weighted piece of string at it. It wraps around the critters legs and the thing falls over. I think it make it worthwhile the critter would have to stay down for a duration of time, though not enough to make combat too easy, but enough to make the resources and attack time usefull. You cant have every TKM-Ranger in the galaxy making a crate of these and just mashing creatures to death as they lie helplessly on the floor, it would be insane. Which brings me to another thought, is it only melee combat professions that get damage bonuses when the target is knocked down? Or is it ranged as well? There could be some balance issues within the Ranger profession if its not both.
