Thread: Idea: Knock down trap

With talk about different or improved traps, I had an idea.

The traps we have no can (at least in theory) inflict, blind, dizzy and stun state effects, however we can't do knock down. Therefore, how about a "bolo whip" style trap (the kind of thing that Wicket knocks himself out with in RotJ). The idea being that if you throw it succesfully, it wraps around the legs of your target hence making them fall over. The effect would of course be temporary (imagine that the creature works it's way free to continue it's approachto you).

So this would be a trap that just did knock-down or would it be a kind of knock-down stay-down kind of trap? KD would be nice if dizzzy worked. I think it goes without saying that I'd like one trap that gives the same effect as both. And labeling it as a bolo gives it a nice basis in reality (so to speak )

Yeah, this would work well, especially if we get the "states" traps working.

Sling a dizzy on them, then a bolo and laff as they roll around.

Wouldn't be a game breaker, as only Rangers get to use it.

Good idea. (that 5 stars was mine)

Ok lets think this through for a second. How would you THROW a knockdown trap? Would it be something like a snake in a box? Would be an ever expanding thing of goop? Im not against a KD trap. What im saying is that it would somehow have to be restricted to either a droid with trap launcher or some kind of portable handheld expendable trap laucher. Think like a commmando rocket launcher.

Now a static trap thats in the ground that would do KD would make complete sense. As well as one that stuck a person in place. Just a thrown trap with the power to knockdown something very large doesnt make sense.

Ok heres the first reply we'd "But a pistoleer can do a KD with a small pistol". Sure thats a great example of something that makes NO sense whatever. A TK doing a KD makes a lot of sense since they are knocking there legs out. A pistoleer getting a KD from a sneak attack and waylay to the back of the head that makes sense but we don't have sneak attacks. Having a 5 foot tall twilek with an FWG5 KD a rancor now that doesnt.

When coming up with traps think of some logic as to how it could be done. Thats what the devs asked us for in the past. And i think i may have hit upon it with an expenadle trap launcher. Since you dont equip it like a weapon. You put your weapon down and then arm it.

Actualy i think bola traps would be thrown like all other traps (history lesson: bola's are thrown at people not launched unless u watched commando with areny in it too many times), we ain't going to see static traps as i doubt the dev's would even allow us to have them, which is a shame realy.

For large prey ok maybe static traps would be a good idea but in average it would probley envolve a lot of coding to pull it off, to workout trap effects, how the trap actualy does as it's suppose to etc etc etc

Bolo is a great idea.

And would probably be the most worthwhile trap if you landed it -- in my opinion.

Let's hope the Devs think so too.

And you wouldn't need a cannon for it.

I agree. I dont know why it didnt hit me when he said bolo before. I was thinking a full on bruteforce knockdown not like a bolo.

Ok so whens it coming in game?

I would also like to refer the Honourable Gentleman to the age old adage "the bigger they are, the harder they fall". In reference which, picture if you will the following scenario unfolding...

Rick Rangerly, Master Ranger and Big Game Hunter (oorah!), slips quietly past the nest of Enraged Rancor on his way to cash in his months novice merchanting xp. Crick! A small twig snaps underfoot and the bally beasts are upon him.

Pausing only to whip his sneakers off, Rick Rangerly rapidly ties a knot in the laces, whirls the shoes above his head, builds up a little speed (and, in an alternate world justifies the Dev's putting a one combat turn pause into the firing sequence) then lets fly at the leading ER.

The sneakers spin through the air, their shape now just a sort of horizontally travelling spiral, whirr into the leg region of the rancor which, after the briefest of pauses falls HEAVILY on it's face. Teeth and spittle flying out in a comic stylee emitting a pitiful "oofyeh" as it comes to rest.

A moments STUNNED confusion as the beasts tiny mind gets to grips with the situation "urrgh, aaargh... somethings holding my feet... uuurgh.. I kill it..! Urgh? There's nothing there?? Just a pair of cheesy track shoes?? RAAARGH..."

By which time Rick Rangerly has, fleetfootedly, legged it over the hill to the Saturday Morning Matinee Movie House Pianists persistent playing of the scary running away tune followed by a loud rantaraa as he escapes to fight another day.

I tried this at home, substituting first a small child then a dog for the enraged rancor. The best footwear to use was a heavy pair of workboots. The child fell 9 times out of 10, the dog 8 from 10. Slippers are useless, no laces. Unfortunately I didn't notice that flaw until after launching and now have muddy wet feet , having had to retrieve an unconscious child, a stunned dog and a pie of footwear from the back of the garden.

I don't think he is kidding, folks!

In college, I had a lot of cowboys living on my floor in the dorms. They used to have a specific kind of person (sorry, no more details, but gullible was one of the adjectives used) run through our lobby so they could rope the person. It worked like a champ!

Can we put it in the offical idea's bucket now, Owen?

A trap like this would be great. Follow it up with an adhesive mesh to keep that critter down as well. Oh the fun to be had.

I like it. Enraged Durni running at you and you sling a weighted piece of string at it. It wraps around the critters legs and the thing falls over. I think it make it worthwhile the critter would have to stay down for a duration of time, though not enough to make combat too easy, but enough to make the resources and attack time usefull. You cant have every TKM-Ranger in the galaxy making a crate of these and just mashing creatures to death as they lie helplessly on the floor, it would be insane. Which brings me to another thought, is it only melee combat professions that get damage bonuses when the target is knocked down? Or is it ranged as well? There could be some balance issues within the Ranger profession if its not both.

We already do this. A KD trap is useless to a TKM because we already have two knockdown attacks. I think it's a good idea for the rest of you, but a trap like this would be just another unusedranger trap for me.

i could see it if we had a trap launcher of some sort as everyone else said.

some sort of heavy object fired a high speed at the knee or ankle. that would pull anything's leg out from under it and might cause a snare state (if you get hit in the ankle you limp and that's all there is to it)
