A side note on the combat profession aspect. I disagree that we are a combat profession.
There are, from my point of view, two ways to look at our combat situation. 1) Ranger supliments a combat profession allowing the combat profession to become an elite creature hunter. 2) Combat professions supliment Ranger to allow Ranger to become a great harvester. There are complimentary skills, this is true. However the Ranger profession alone is not a combatant. To clarify, take a Master Ranger/Master Weaponsmith combination. The skill points requred do not leave enough room for combat skills, and the person with that template is essentially combat ineffective. Some of his skills require combat to use, but they are not combative in themselves.
As a Ranger (admittedly I am working my way back to it, but I spent 14 months in the profession before my departure) I was not combat centric. I studied the various creatures of my chosen planet and learned all that I could about it. This was my approach. It was not combat centric unless I wanted it to be. Yes I was poor, and yes I was "unneccessary" to most, other than tracking, but it was my character.
As to the other points in this thread, I am enjoying the reading. I wanted to clarify that one point though.
