This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

What about a few traps that did damage along with states? Kind of like grenades but less damage and some states to make up for it.

Exactly.

We get a unique weapon, our traps. We should work on getting the range increased ( scale with advancement in trapping ) getting the state-effects and their duration up-to-date and possibly get some damage added to some of the traps.

BTW, since I haven't gotten a chance to get on TC yet. Have the traps that do action and mind damage now been converted correctly yet?

Discussed, now let this dead horse rest peacefully.

Personally, im happy to push the developement of traps into our ranger weapon. They have lots of possibilities and if the stealth aspects get off the ground, could havea major place in combat and pre-combat (setting up ambushes etc). IMO traps should always be the ranger weapon then your ranger effectiveness is enhanced by whatever weapon specialisation you bring to your template.

I like that rangers are unique in what weapons they use (they can use any) and are not pigeonholed into melee or ranged. I understand the desire for a ranger firarm but on a personal level i dont realy want one. It would be cool sure, but i want traps to be my defining weapon in combat, i want people to understand that traps as weapons are a large part of what make a ranger powerfull in combat. They need work, yes, but thats not what this is about.

All in all, a weapon would be cool, but seeing as though we dont have marksman i highly doubt we could ask for one and besides i like the prospects of traps being the ranger weapon more, they are more unique.

Almagill said it once and i will repeat it.

I really dont support a unique ranger weapon unless it is tied into the traps that we already have. A ranger weapon should be unique and applicable for both the melee and ranged rangers. If not, we get pigeonholed into a particular combat class.

I loved being a ranger/ pikeman... and i loved being a ranger/ pistoleer, i am having a good time with ranger/ rifleman.

but in terms of rangers and dealing damage, it should really be tied into the traps.

I agree, but I think if traps are going to perform that role, then we need traps on a much larger scale, and we need lethal traps, or at least traps that would make killing a fairly large creature a lot easier and quicker than it would be without. (I say this with an image of a camoflauged hole in the ground containing lots of spikes as an example).

Such things shouldn't be unreasonable, especially since Ewoks can take out multiple AT-ST's with only rope and logs

I've played Ranger with both melee and Ranged professions, and it's equally viable. The fact is that a weapon that can only be used effectively by less than half of the population isn't going to work. Unique weapons and unique ideas are what Ranger is about. I'm not with everyone else about traps being solely our weapon (unless they add traps that are specifically damage dealing or (and god I would love this) they made traps experimentable. You can either experiment in damage or duration of the effect.

Take that experimentation ability into account with a weapon like the Double Crossbow idea I had the other day and you've got a unique weapon for Rangers AND a way to deal damage that can be used by both ranged and melee Rangers. that's the kind of thing we need to focus on. Not getting us a new version of one weapon that half the population won't be able to wield effectively.

I'm actually coming back to the idea of traps as weapons if (and this is a big if) they have a higher damage-dealing capability.

As i said above-- making it so that rangers could experiment on traps for duration of effect or damage or number of traps would be a great boon, especially when combined with a double cross-bow.

We should get a lot of weapons certifications, but do think that is ever going to happen.

The points I made seem to have gotten lost in this thread, since I still keep seeing the argument that a Ranger weapon could only suit one playstyle or combat profession, but not all.

If that's the argument, give a weapon that suits both ranged and melee playstyles.

    Certification Requirements
  • "Ranged Ranger Weapon"
Marksman branch Elite master + Master Ranger
    Includes master rifles, pistols, carbines
  • "Melee Ranger Weapon"
Brawler branch Elite master + Master Ranger
    Includes TKM, Pikeman, 1 & 2-handed swords

If that's too complicated, just give out a melee ranger weapon, and a ranged ranger weapon at the master ranger box! Pick whichever you want to hunt with, both, or none.

Why shouldn't we get our own unique weapon? Traps should be fixed and improved anyway! We shouldn't consider settling on traps as our "ranger weapon".. what should be considered is the fact that they're long overdue for fixes and improvements.

Give us good working traps and our ranger weapon!!

but the point is that if traps do damage that is comparable over time to a unique weapon, and we had a unique method of delivering those traps (Double Crossbow) then you don't need another weapon. The unique weapon would be the trap launcher. however, if traps stay as useless as they are now, a unique ranger weapon would be a must.
