Thread: Something rather sad...
... is reading that some of the "old timers" are feeling this way ![]()
I look at how strong some of my friends are... how easily they kill things that just petrify me. Sometimes I feel pretty weak. It isn't always a pleasant feeling to be incapped and hearing how so-and-so could have taken that mob easily.
Then I look at the skills template they are using... there is no denying there are half a dozen templates that are just extremely powerful right now. By comparison, Ranger looks a bit lacking.
We have two skill trees stillpromised an overhaul. A number of combat classes have broken/underpowered skills and specials. Lets face it, all of us have a combat profession... What would your game play be like if all of those skills were working correctly? Would Ranger be contributing and complimenting those skills?
Look at the super templates... How long do you think those will last?
Perhaps I have blind faith, but I do feel that the gap will close... it seems to be the way of all mmrpgs. In a few months, the game will be completely different. Personally, I'll probably ride it out as a ranger... I've seen how much has changed, what skills we have, and it looks good. It all boils down to your enjoyment level and your patience...
On the positive side, once you select skills, you aren't stuck with them. So if you feel the urge to explore... maybe you should. Nonetheless, I have to agree Fred_Skinner... It is rather sad.

Arg! I just reread the thread and still can't believe it... We are designed to be master hunters, so go to it folks! 3k units a day!? A DAY!?Maybe the reason you're poor is because you don't spend enough time hunting! And if you don't like to hunt, I have to ask why be a ranger? Please don't misread these posts as a flame, it just bugs me to see fellow rangers complaining about money when we pretty much have a monopoly on creature harvesting, and we have zilch for overhead besides travel/weapons.

Sorry but I had more money thenI needed so I bougth a PA hall for my house and invited a few friends.
I can not even fill the contractsI have now. There is one guy that will buy all of this one type of meat I can get. If I am getting poor I go hunt for a night and I have guaranted sales.
I like to specialize in meat. I always ask Doctor types and Bio-Engineers that I see if they need meat. Alot of times they already know of what planet is yeilding the best meats that weak before I do. They point me in the right direction and pay me alot for my services.
I do tend to play alot but I can easily get 10k or even up to 20k meat in a night. I never group with my pets so I get the extra yeaild. This helps alot.
IF hunting is boring then drop Ranger. That is all it is for. Hunting certain pets, I got Hired to hunt Dark Jedi and Force Sensatives, Hunting for animal resources. Always hunting something.

Geeze, I am confused here.
I am a Ranger/Pistoleer. Getting pretty good at pistol too. The terms are giving me insane missions... 3k is about the norm... I am talking go kill a durni warren for 3k off the regular term. How long can that take...answer is two missions like that, 3k per, 1500m or less from the term, total elapsed time 21 mins, and I harvested out and back and during. I ended up with a couple of hundred units of herbie meat and other stuff as I ran out and back. Hmmm.... 6k in 21 mins = 18k an hour,,, call it 15k, gotta give time for finding the missions.
Fred, what are you doing, sitting around drinking Jawa beer all day?? Well, me too, but I always find time to run a mission or 4 before I start imbibing. I have a house, and 3 harvestors, and 2 wind generators. I have sold the stuff I mine for decent profits. My trick is I stockpile it and then find a buyer for mass quantities. Really, how much metal does one Ranger need for camps and traps?
So anyhow, my bank account is around 450k. I have pistols stored in the house, enough I will not be buying any for at least a week ( thats a long time for me). I travel all over, road trips are fun. I tip likea drunken Texan oil tycoon. I give stuff away just cuz I can't use it. Oh yeah, I get yelled at for selling stuff at 2 - 5 cpu too. Go figure.
Missions are the way to go.

As a rough guess, I'd say two-thirds of the combat-oriented players out there have Scout hunting skills. Particularly early and mid-career, you have plenty of skill points to spare for it. If you're out running missions, it only makes sense to be able to harvest the critters you kill for your PA and/or extra cash.
The bazaars are overflowing with creature resources. Sure, Rangers harvest *more* from a given creature, but not *that* much more.
The reality is that if you want to make money, get Surveying skill and go mine. A heavy harvey can pull up 10K+ units of whatever you want in a day without any appreciable effort from you, and in most cases you can sell it for the same price you'd get for a typical animal resource. Only in very rare instances does a bit of meat or hide sell for more than 3 CrPU.
The economy in SWG is certainly unbalanced with respect to this. You simply cannot get the same financial return for your effort in hunting. Hunt because you love it, not to get rich.

I do missions all the time. I only get 3 hours a night to do them, however. I usually choose Explore missions due to the higher payout and the better chance of actually getting to harvest. When I do destroy missions someone else tends to finish them before I get there... No harvest for you!
I noticed that you are a Pistoleer. I suspect that you do not have to be as carefull as I, being a Rifleman. As I said before, perhaps this is the problem...
If I could actually kill the white-conned critters without much death and pain... I also need to get some experience in Rifle so I have to be careful with bleeds. also, to harvest and not get aggroed I need to pull one away. How are you doing this? just run up and AoE away and deal witht he hits? I don't have medic and can't heal. I have 250% damage done to me and miss more then you (this has been documented, btw). I have a sword to help with this, but using the sword cost me in Rifle. Can't leave and come back or the critter is all healed.
Did you ever die to a Crazed Durni? A Giant Gubber? They don't deathblow, but I take so much damage from them I DO die to them. As a pistoleer I'm betting that you have not, hense perhaps your confusion...
To be honest, ignoring the missions would allow me to collect more organics, so I don't think this is it. The problem is I'm limited to bottom feeding until I find a group and then the group didctates what creature is picked and not the merchent I'm working for. Also: I have to so funky tricks to get the correcttarget critter... perhaps if they would let us actually pick the critter...
I work for a living. I get 3-4 hours to hunt. This is not enough time? I LOVE to hunt, but I must do it alone 'cause my friends want easy within-one-kilo missions.

Oh ya , heads up on a nasty bug. I have maxed Rifle xp at 900k with 65k of combat xp. Figured I would Go to Dath with my pa and go hunting. everything is good, buffed out ready to go.
Target 1 Nightsister Rancor. 460ch xp 1 combat xp
Target 2 Nightsister slave 0 ch xp, solo with about 9 hs3's 1 combat xp
Now according to the tech support forum there is a bug. If you have maxed weapon xp you get 1 combat xp.
I think I would actually rather to go work then Play today.
You should hunt alone. Grouping slows you down, time-wise and resource-wise.
Yeah, we do have a monopoly on creature harvesting. Just because some shmo BH has master scout, what do you think a BH spends his time doing? PvP maybe, BH missions? No, I think rangers are the only class that stay out and hunt as long as we do, so I'm not just referring to creature-harvesting mods here.
Forget about doing missions when hunting. You're better off just leaving town and crossing a planet, using areatrack, and moving from lair to lair.
I'd probably drop the sword too. Taking a newly socially assistive mamien lair melee-style can't be good for your HAM. Pistoleer isn't that great for PvP at the moment due to nerfs and bugs, but I think it's a great fit for us.
Just throwing in my two cents.... I think this idea of Ranger throwing buffs towards the rifle skills is fantastic. It only makes sense. Roleplaying a ranger kind of leans on either unarmed or rifle (at least in my humble opinion) adding a few buffs, especially ones that would either boost speed or increase accuracy/damage would be ideal. After all a ranger needs to be precise and quick in order to prevent damaging the hide he needs to harvest.
Like I said just my two cents...

(pistoleer / carbiner rangers please don't spam I personally use a pistol as my secondary I just think Rifle fits a little better with the profession.)
I think what is sad about a Ranger is that his ability to hunt alone on high level Mobs is difficult. Conceal and Maskscent break and traps are average at best. If I want to go kill a high level aggressive creature I should be able to do it! Isn't that part of what being a Ranger is? I watch Commandos and CH's out with Maulers wreaking havoc and I'm creaping around trying to kill off Huntress' on Dantooine and getting schooled. Pisses me off. I toss a trap and while Im frozen it aggros on me. Now that Mask scent breaks on combat initiation the mobs seem to be on me faster. Camo kits are still average....my my tests.
We need ONE UBER Trap that holds a creature for like 15-20 seconds. We need some substantial weapon enhancement. Or a cool weapon at master....like a bow.Our camo should be INCREDIBLE at Master. We need to hold our Camo longer during a fight. I should be able to go out without a Creature and have reasonable chance of hunting on Endor solo. Not necessarily carpet bombing like a Master CH but certainly not being along just for my great tracking skills. Our Harvests on Creatures should be HUGE. So big people would be saying "Gee I really want us to get a Ranger going with us."
Notice how a good hunting team wants a Doc or Combat Medic? They should want us MORE.
My 2 cents worth.
