I have to observe that a person beginning a thread, poll, conversation with "what is the most useless profession" is basically trying to get a rise out of people, disclaimers to the contrary, and is starting the group off in a negative or polarized mindset. Of course, this attracts posters who have some need to disparage others, to assure themselves of their god-given superiority. I don't understand the attraction of various professions that I don't play, but it's interesting that people who do can put so much time and effort into some little imaginary task that for a while they live and breathe it. Of course, that's what we all do, according to our various temperaments. I mean, how many people contentedly enjoying the game have the need to thumb their noses at others (or themselves!) just because? So we have 5 pages of malcontent posts that I didn't have the stamina to read, and I didn't choose Ranger to satisy even one of them. I really enjoy Ranger for a lot of subjective, personally satistying reasons, which is basically why every single player in the game plays, whatever their profession.

When i saw the subject the Troll Alert sounded in my head. But it is nice to see our forum community responding back. We aren't useless. We just aren't combat monsters. We seem to be a very ground group of folks that enjoy the game in our own way.

The original poster actually has a good point at highlighting how others see us and how past rangers view the profession, its not all bad no, but there is a reason why rangers say: "ranger is a lifestyle, not a profession". Its because the profession itself isnt half as good as the community and the playstyle it 'represents'.

"Who gets the resources for Doctors to make buffs that allows Bounty Hunters to wear composite armor and make them so effective in PvP? Oh that's right, WE DO. So who's useless now?"

And so does every other scout in the galaxy, this doesntgive us a unique skill, it makes up part of the crowd. Yes we can harvest a little more than master scouts, but they can get more defensive bonuses than us if they wish to aid them in hunting.

"If Rangers are so useless, than why am I getting paid 100,000 credits just to find one NPC? So who's useless now?"

Yes our /areatracking works sometimes. Prety cool trick and unique to us, but im sure rangers everywhere will join with me in saying tracking down farmers for a 'living' is not that much 'fun' and not something we want to make our class defining role.

"I reveled in the fact that the same creatures that were fighting to the death to kill my team mates were the same ones that gave me scouting xp a few moments earlier. So who's useless now?"

Leveling isnt exactly a use. I mean what is scout xp (under present patch conditions) going to do a master ranger set in his/her template? It doesnt do much at all. The ability to level up is common in every profession in SWG its not just unique to us. The fact we get scout xp before killing a creature is only because we are using our scout/ranger skill. If weapons somehow made you able to hide from creatures (/maskscent) then they would give weapons xp prior to combat too. Theres nothing realy unique about it, you get rewarded with xp for using your skills.

"the people in my group were asking me if I could apply camo kits on them."

Most people are not aware of the purpose of camo, dont know how it works, expect to be removed from the radar, able to walk by rancors/kreetles without getting sniffed or simply dont have /maskscent. For those that dont have maskscent then sure why not use camo, but the vast majority of players do not understand how camo works and its limitations/bugs. In the majority of groups (if you can find one) players will thank you if you give em camo but i dont think any would be willing to pay for it, demmand it or expect you to use it, its simply not that good. Yes it has a use so its not useless, however considering the lack of resource cost and limited bugs whilst using mask why use camo at all? That in itself can make it useless to many rangers.

"The main complaint about Rangers is that we aren't very good at PvP."

Yes people moan and rightly so that we dont have a 'role' in PvP but i think nearly all rangers accept that we should be a support/stealth role rather than direct PvP. Id say the main complaints are infact not being able to harvest much more than master scouts, not getting enough payback for our skill points, not being the ultimate hunters, bugs, broken/redundant skills, no feedback from devs, no developementsand general ranger grumpyness because of these (/tips-hat to Fred hehe).

This is an awesome post. Listen, I *love* my Master Ranger character on Tarquinas and if I didn't enjoy it so much I wouldn't be leveling up another Ranger-to-be on a new server. I just hate to see a good profession so lacking in uniqueness.

For the person who brought up that a Master Ranger can still harvest more with a droid and veghash than a Master Scout with a droid and veghash, all I can say is that the extra amount we can harvest is not enough to make the expenditure on skill points worth it. So yes, you are right I guess. But when you are sitting there trying to decide which skills you can do without so you can have a master combat profession and maybe some basic med skills guess which skills will get surrendered?

/areatrack and Camo kits are the only 2 unique things about Rangers. Camo kits aren't all they're cracked up to be and are almost more trouble than they are worth. The /areatrack skill only works if there is something to track. Since I resubscribed to SWG, I noticed that the spawns have REALLY thinned out. You used to have to watch your step and /maskscent was your saving grace. I once ran 5000+ meters from one place to another on Corellia and didn't see even ONE MEASLY SPAWN! Alot of good /areatrack would have done me there <rolls eyes>. I remember using it with my Master Ranger on Tarquinas before I closed my account and I have to say that it did work great. My only complaint was that it would have been nice to have an expanded tracking range. Bottom line: /areatrack is our only advantage over Scouts. But is that enough to spend 97 skill points to get that line only in the Ranger tree, let alone the skill points necessary to become a Master Ranger?

I guess there are other professions in the same boat as far as not having enough unique skills to make the skill point expenditure worth it. Or the bonus effect of mastering those professions is not worth putting skill points into it. Rangers are not alone in this regard. So maybe we aren't the MOST useless profession. But if the Ranger profession were removed from the game, I doubt too many non-Rangers would miss it. That's how lacking the Ranger-only skills are.

Well, all that I was trying to do with that post was to try and get you guys a bit more excited about being a Ranger. When reading through the posts, I rarely ever see a positive post about our profession. I decided to look at what our profession can do instead of what it can't do in order to try and liven things up a bit on this message board.

I do understand the short-commings of being a Ranger, don't get me wrong. I know that the 63 points that it takes to get to Master Ranger could be better spent elsewhere, and that most people become a Ranger because they like the idea of being a Ranger (that's why I chose the profession). Even though the Ranger community is our best asset, I still think that we should be proud of the abilities that we do have, even if not all of them work as well as we would like them to.

As far as a Ranger surviving in PvP, I recently participated in my first PvP battle and was killed in a matter of seconds; I didn't even get a shot off. Although I do admit that I wasn't able to get a buff from a doctor before the battle, and I wasn't in my composite armor (I was waiting to get the buffs so I could put it on). Besides those two factors, what else would I need to know in order to survive longer in a PvP battle (I'm already climbing up the Rifleman tree)?

Since being a Ranger doesn't add to PvP, and its benefits in PvE aren't that much greater than Master Scout, would anyone recommend me surrendering my Ranger skills (except Novice Ranger, for the tag) in order to pursue a more combat-oriented profession? I know this basically goes against what I just wrote at the top of this post, but I'd plan to go back to getting Master Ranger after any positive changes have been made to the Ranger profession.

Clearly, you need to look harder...

The whole bit about Ranger being a lifestyle, not a proffession....that's pretty positive. JBMat will spit in your face unless you love being a Ranger.

on the whole, people who choose Ranger will not put it down. Those who are here for questionable motives...they'll knock it. I don't think Ranger is perfect but I'd say on the whole, I love it.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

I'd never recommend it, however it is personal choice and how much fun you have playing the ranger lifestyle. I cant play without it and many many others are in the same boat as me but there are lots of others who simply choose to go alternative routes until ranger gets some love, and i dont blame most of em.

Ranger isnt the most attractive profession out there and it requires you to 'click' with the whole ranger ideal and lifesytle if you are going to keep it up and stay on as a ranger. If things havnt 'clicked' yet or you think it would do you good to try something else whilst ranger gets some love then thatsa prety good plan.

End of the day its all up to you, if you'vefitted yourself intothe lifestyle yet then you'll find it very hard to drop and when you do you'll feel like something just isnt right. But if you havnt got into it yet, everything should be ok to drop and come back later.

Oh, I've definately gotten into being a Ranger I'm just wondering how I can be a Ranger and not get creamed in PvP. I must admit that i'm 0/1/0/0 in my Rifleman profession, and that might get my combat life expectancy above 3 seconds. I was just wondering if there was anyone who was able to pull off being a Master Ranger and still persue other professions to still be useful in PvP.

If I could keep my Ranger abilities AND be good at PvP, that would make my day.

A Master Ranger + Master Combat Prof should be just fine in PvP, at least until the CB. My advice is to master Rifles and see how you shape up in PvP. Rifleman is a completely different prof once you master it.
