HA! so the ability to become invisible is coded into the game!

Well, honestly it doesn't mean it will ever happen. but at least they can't say it's technicly impossible.

Only if we let it die. I say we start a petition on the ranger forums for this!

That's pretty cool! Daniel was the CSR who helped me. We had an interesting conversation...

Calc, it seems that being invis on the radar and map IS possible and would be a VERY easy thing to code.

Ya as soon as i read this post a few days back i thought of how cool it would be and how perfect it would be to have rangers do this. Although whats the point what snooper client hacks are gonna put us on radar anyway.
Hmm would it even matter though if we did show up on radar again someone using a client hack when they cannot attack us? If they cannot see us, they cannot attack us.
Hmmm sounds more interesting now. Although would more or less make stealth attacks redundant if people could see us on radar hehe.

I am not sure even the current (and probably crude) implementation of the CSR-stealth need to be vulnerable to client-side hacks. Yes, they are visible to /areatrack, but /areatrack must be a server-side operation like almost all operations (combat, crafting etc) because it operates on information unavailable to clients. I would guess that the stressed-out implementor of the CSR-stealth forgot all about the rangers, so left that hole open. (Once again, a case of 'sig est omen'.)
To summerize:
1. Stealth of a very powerful and useful kind is already implemented.
2. From a game balance point of view, it needs to be nerfed a bit by severely limiting what the ranger can do in stealthed state. For example, combat and interaction with objects, healing, eating, drinking, running can be blocked.
3. Plus there can be requirements before this state can be activated and deactivated (e.g. no mob, npc, player within 256m, no states, no combat etc.),
4. a HAM drain tick can be added
5. If discovered, e.g. by a player coming within 5m of the stealthed ranger, the limitations of the stealthed state would continue for another 30secs (probably long enough for an elite combat player to incap/kill even a buffed/armored ranger.)
6. Thus counter-stealth teams would consist of a tracker plus 1-2 combat templates conducting sweeps.
It sure sounds exciting and game-enriching to me. And it doesn't step on any profession's toes as far as I can see.

Oh wow, i didnt know that
This makes things very interesting heh.
As for you ideas, i like alot, ill add some feedback under each point:
To summerize:
1. Stealth of a very powerful and useful kind is already implemented.

Very much so and now that i know tracking is actually on server side it makes it far more exciting to think of the potential implementations.
2. From a game balance point of view, it needs to be nerfed a bit by severely limiting what the ranger can do in stealthed state. For example, combat and interaction with objects, healing, eating, drinking, running can be blocked.
Yes i dont think we should be able to access terminals, containers(inc corpses) whilst in the stealthed state. Healing should also bring us out of a stealthed state but drinking and eating i dont think should. As for running, perhaps you can run, but if you run when around players or maybe even walking with a 10m radius you get found. The way to counter this is to go prone. The only player who could find you whilst prone and stealthed would be another ranger using a special skill.
When you go prone you dont even show up on the areatrack, the way you get found out whilst in your 'hiden' state is for a ranger to initiate and areatrack within 5m of you, this is the only way a master ranger can be found whilst in hide mode.
When the ranger is not in prone mode if anyone passes within 10m (not including mounted players - bikes, mounts etc) the ranger is found.
3. Plus there can be requirements before this state can be activated and deactivated (e.g. no mob, npc, player within 256m, no states, no combat etc.),
Yeah i like that, the no players within a certain range is great. Not sure about mobs and npcs though because that would make some planets very hard because its not often you go to a plent with no creatures (lag permitting of course). Definatly whilst not in combat, there is the oportunity to add a '/hide' command in there but i think that would be extremely powerfull, it would basically be a get out of death free card.
4. a HAM drain tick can be added
I dont like the idea of dying whilst using a vital skill but perhaps a good way of limiting the in stealth time.
5. If discovered, e.g. by a player coming within 5m of the stealthed ranger, the limitations of the stealthed state would continue for another 30secs (probably long enough for an elite combat player to incap/kill even a buffed/armored ranger.)
With risks like that the excitement and fun levels would be insane. Id love this to happen aslong as we would be able to counter a tracker, there is alot of 0,0,4,0 rangers out there.
6. Thus counter-stealth teams would consist of a tracker plus 1-2 combat templates conducting sweeps.
Yup i see that too, it would be great. Imagine the tracker gets a 'blip' and the team is sent out to the location. He performs another sweap and nothing. The recon ranger has gone into hiding. The guys know he couldnt have gone far so the tracking /areatracks to the north every 5/10m trying to get the hidden ranger. Whilst they are doing this, the stealthed ranger has slowly crawled south and heads into the forest for cover and escape before trying again.
It sure sounds exciting and game-enriching to me. And it doesn't step on any profession's toes as far as I can see.
Sure dont
and exciting seems to be an understament hehe
