Master Ranger/Master Carbineer
Carbineer has more defenses then riflemen. Also has a snare shot as well as a knockdown. Also for when those creatures charge in groups it features some Area attacks to include suppression fire and spray shot I believe. Suppression shot is supposed to slow movement (it does currently but for about 1/2 a second)
I was master riflemen/master ranger But I found that my rifle abilities were bugged and I didnt have any fun at 65m sniping a target. I wanted to get up close and personal and while 50meters isn't as close as pistols I find that combat is more dynamic with carbineer then rifles. and I've always liked the carbineer specials more.
I can't really add much to the carbiner post (am master ranger / master carbiner) except that the carbiner specials seem to compliment my traps very well. For example, crippling shot (the one that snares) seems to work really well with p-dart. Also, if one of your traps misses, charge shot gives you enough time to chunk another (if you can get the knockdown in).
Other advantages: the guns look cool
Disadvantages:
1) charge shot actually charges you forward, so if you are trying to tackle one thing at a time out of range of its buddies, you have to be careful with chage shot, as you'll charge into range. I've found that if you hold down the back key while executing charge shot, you can compensate for the forward movement.
2) many of the 'crowd control' specials are area effect, so they can get you a lot of unwanted attention if you're not careful. I'm not sure whether they are working right either.
3) My traps seem to do more crowd control than do the carbiner specials. For example, I've found that if multiple creatures are attacking me, I can p-dart, cripple-shot one and it'll stay away long enough for me to deal with the other.
4) and this probably applies to all combat professions: I'm really having a hard time targeting things. It used to be that in the heat of battle, you would auto-target the next attacker, but now it seems that I'm always tabbing forever or clicking frantically to target the next thing that's attacking me. Very frustrating.

He's lvl66, go anywhere, do anything, only died once so far on Kash and that was just cos he stripped off and charged the spiders in a mad attempt to get an arm or leg replaced.
Good specials from BH, combined with the hitting power of MR and a few traps mean he's a pretty handy 'all rounder'.

Frankly, he sucks. Pick critters at his level (30 something) and they eat him. Lob a few traps, snare tehm and he still isn't pushing out enough damage. Having said that, soon as he gets some space missions done I'mlooking for better weapons as pretty much everything he used to be cert'd for is lvl 54+ now
Just for comparison, a non-ranger:
PL
Master Fencer, TK 4344, scout 3020.
PL used to be my dancer, MID, MEnt. Now she's a little killing machine with some TN and maskscent plus a little harvest mod.
Offence Speed : 100
Offence Accuracy : 210
Melee Defense : 175
Ranged Defense : 125
Using a 'nice' Ryyk blade (pupped and sliced pre-CU, 370+ dps) she hits as hard as ken' does with either T21 or AdvLaser. She loses a LOT on harvests but hoovers up loot like its going out of fashion. Voodoo doll anyone?
Pros: With Ranger you can camo and draw herds out one at a time. Since Swords has decent defense and a really good offense you can usually take out something one vs. one pretty easily. I use glow wire traps, to make melee/combat defense go down, then use CoB and Defense posture. Armor break is an amazing tool and for really tough (lvl 78-82) bleeding is a really good attack as well. With good stims almost anything around lvl 80 is soloable
Cons: Swords has no area attack and no knockdown attack (unless i am missing it, but i don't think i am). This makes it incredibly difficult if you aggro more than one, or if you need a breather to get a stim.
I have never played a different combat template, so i don't know the pro's/cons of of others but i really enjoy this template. Swords took me a while to figure out post-CU but it really is a quite effective profession

I am quite happy with this template.
Noarmor is required as TK inate armor if great, especially with Center-of-Being.
No weapon is required as TK bare hands do enough damage to kill critters 1 level above me.
At CL 80 I was able to solo and tank 2 melee CL78's with only 1 heal from a 1034 stim-D.
With no armor required I am running around in a green camo outfit with BE enhancements.
+16 Melee/Range Def. green camoflage pants.
+16 Melee/Range Def. shirt.
+15 Mask Scent/Camo desert command jacket ( green with goldscarf )
Privateer bandoleer ( substitutes for 50 item backpack ).
Greensneeks.
I am a happy Ranger
Normal solo combat, for me:
Get mission
-Mask Scent
-Approach lair to 49meters from critter
-Launch wire mesh trap to pull one critter and drop its melee defense
-Apply CoB while critter is running toward me
-armor break/kd/hit/hit/hit/hit/hit/reapply CoB/kd/hit/hit/hit....etc
-harvets corpse
Critters with a range attack requires a bit more planning ( i.e. CL80 spinflaps, rawls etc. )
Trees and rocks provide good block/cover so I don't get hit a lot with ranged attacks. I try to be next to the tree before launching a trap so I can duck behind it and force the critter to come after me - then normal melee routine.
Downside of this template is in caves/dungeons where line-of-sight doesn't seem to work vs NPC's. I get chewed up pretty bad at range.![]()
