Thread: Ranger: An Outsiders Perspective

I think its something that needs to be discussed at great legnth by the rangers who go to sandbox. Other players and especialy the devs need to realise that rangers, although not gaining many skills to aid in combat, are a combat profession and require combat to perform (hunt). Making combat harder is going to seriously effect the margin between stacker templates and rangers and also rangers ability to hunt effectivly.

Everytime someone post about Ranger being the best Hunter, I get flooded with a long list of things to say about it. But it is so long I can never get it worded right. So I am just going to stop here and say this! When you look at the Ranger tree it looks like it has all the skills to be the best all around hunter. But when your friend the TKM/something with a little scout comes back to town with more hide then you in the same amount of time you where out, plus say he had to stop to duel someone at the mission term, you have to set back and wonder.

Will I stop being happy with Ranger, No. But I will post in here with every idea I get that may someday give me the edge.

I do think that we have run into some problems because of alternatives being introduced in the game. With some luck, we will be helped from a downgrade of buffs and armor and who knows what other fixes (maybe a boost in harvesting?). But, i will not get into our problems and potential fixes in this thread, there are plenty other places for that

And thanks, Calc, for anything you find out!

We cost the same skill points to that of a master doc. Can you honestly say that we compaire to them?

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

Hmm

Can you honestly say that having less effective armour and buff will enable us to hunt BETTER?

That is my number 1 concern for the combat balance. That combat gets reduced to the point where rangers need to group in order to hunt even though most poeple dont want to hunt ALL THE TIME. I have this picture of rangers begging to get into a group so they can do their hunting contract, rangers having to jump into large groups because they cannot kill the things they need to harvest. This concerns me alot.

I mean can you not see what the CB will do to us if we dont help push ranger forward? It will make the people who have spent skill points elsewhere more effective at hunting. The defensive mods they gain will enable them to kill creatures better and hunt better. The mods you get from other professions will become much more important due to the fact creatures will be much tougher to kill and where will ranger get you then? Can anyone say that this doesnt concern them?

Of course not...we are soooo much cooler.

But my point was that none of our abilities are broken--they all work as meant to (I think). The problem is that given the investment we are severly underpowered. Camps...suuure, they're wonderful, but they don't do anything for us that cannot get done some other way faster. Traps...well nice but not effective enough. Camo...keeps us hidden alright, at least in PvE--for a while. Tracking...well too much said about that all over (I want to force a spawn of something i want to track!). What we need are not fixes, but something to make Ranger more worthwhile.

But in short, no we are not the equivelent in usefulness to docs...but thats not stopping me from climbing the ranger tree

Your concern is valid..... Now, I am concerned !

Calc, could you, please, do some investigation related to the armor and buffnerf topic? (These two in combo will hit the Rangers mercilessly hard.)

I don't want to be dependent on others when I go hunting and the only thing that keeps me alive is my armor and buffs.

If your investigation concludes that we will be "nerfier" than today but it has to be kept confidential... just say "thumbs down" so I change my profession to something less nerfy, like Politician or Merchant)

I love being a Ranger. Love, love, love it. I don't see myself stopping being a Ranger for a very, very long time, if ever.

There are three, maybe four, changes I'd like to see made, though.

1 - Inherent melee defense. I know we're not a combat profession, but then again--we're not a combat profession! We can't defend ourselves (even though we have Rescue!). You have to be pretty agile to climb over all those dead logs; a little defense or dodge ability would be nice to have. Not every Ranger also takes up a combat profession, so it'd make them a bit more secure when going into the wild.

2 - Speaking of which, by the time you hit Master Ranger, Mask Scent really should not drop as much as it does. I've gone out in +Mask Scent shirt and pants (15 and I think 7), guzzled some Jawa Beer and just flying around Dath--or Endor--or Dantooine--I've had stuff sniff me out. I don't even bother with it on Dath anymore; there's just no point. It drops too soon. And how in the heck are kreetles sniffing out Master Rangers!

3 - Tracking. I'm spoiled, I admit it. I used EverQuest's Ranger tracking system for years, and I love it. To me, the idea of tracking means you can spot tracks and follow them, not just pick up binoculars ora scanner and see what's in the general vicinity. You pick one animal that you see signs of, and get a "path" to them that only you can see. (In EverQuest, you get updates saying, "BigCreature is ahead and the left" every five seconds or so.) I'd like to see us get that kind of ability, even if it's restricted to Master Rangers.

And...

4 - Rescue. I'm also a TKA (closing in on TKM), and my Taunt works better than Rescue. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding Rescue's purpose, though, but I'd at least like a message saying "You've rescued a teammate from an enranged rancor!" or "You were unable to Rescue your teammate from a dwarf nuna," or something.

And finally, a suggestion:

- When we hit Master Ranger, or a certain level of skill, perhaps we could "split harvest." Get more than one resource off of a corpse. Someone else suggested we get all three, that's what inspired me. If not get all three in full/in part, instead of getting our normal 100% of just meat, let us get 50% of our harvest as meat and the rest as, say, bone. I know when we harvest by hand we can easily bounce back and forth between macros, but different creatures give varying amounts, so getting an even split is impossible. Not to mention many of us also use droids, and it's not realistic to change their harvesting interest that often. (We can do random, but then we get no control over it, and it means we may get resources we don't even want.) Just having them programmed to get a split of bone and meat would be nice.

(Nice to know our meat is boneless--juicy and tender!)
