In the normal state, you will auto respond to any attack. This will show up next to your HAM bar as nothing. When attacking you have a little red 'X' there. When you are in attack mode, a single peace returns you to the normal state. When double peaced (or single peaced from the normal state), you have a little blue symbol. The little blue symbol means that you will stand around taking hits without any response. When doing the assist, the AI seems to check if you are responding to the attack. If you are just standing around letting yourself get beat up on, the AI won't assist. Basically, assists only happen when you are actively attacking the target and not when the target is attacking you. So, if you can get the enemy to attack you while you are not attacking it, you avoid the assist. This can be accomplished with a delayed damage attack (like a bleed) or an attack that takes some time to hit (like traps) by initiating the attack and then putting yourself into the double peace mode before the enemy responds. There are other ways to do it but, with only melee skills, the most effective one I've found is traps (although it wouldn't surprise me if grenades or CM poisons/diseases had a similar property, although the grenade AoE adds a little more difficulty [but I've had some fun doing it with AoE traps for a bit more excitement so it might still be possible]). Now this post is getting a bit too long/detailed/inane/stupid/etc so I'll just stop. Let me know if you have any other questions (or if something here is unclear).
