How does it benefit a Ranger as a player for the profession to be relegated to a PvE only profession / Support profession?

What Support does a Ranger provide?

I honestly just don't get it, why anyplayer would want to be restricted to hunting down creatures, and filling meat orders for Doctors and BE's....

LOL, I'm sorry that I am laughing.... You wouldn't understand. It takes a certain personality to play Ranger and enjoy it.......... It's hard to explain.

However, if you really want to know... explore the Ranger forums (Read from today, back three days. That should explain it all for you)

Why do you feel that we as Rangers need to explain or justify anything to you?

Message Edited by Vadis on 07-14-2004 02:49 PM

Because I was a Ranger/Rifleman from week 2 until December. I'm not asking for justification from you at all. I would like to return to my profession of choice with this ability to affectively participate in all aspects of the game. That said, I see alot of ideas/posts completely aimed at further sloting a Ranger for PvE only. When the same exact changes/ideas if proposed with out the "creature only" theme would make the profession viable, in all aspects of the game....

I'm just trying to understand the point of view

Also, remember that you've still got enough skill points at Master Ranger level to take an entire elite combat profession.

Look at it this way - weaponsmiths don't have any combat or support roles, only crafting. That appeals to some people. Other classes are obviously for PvP (Such as BH, though it's currently a bit gimpy) and others are purely support, such as Doc/CM. That's why they built the skill point system, so players could mix and match.

Weaponsmiths have the same ability to pick up a combat profession, the difference is as a WS they have the potential for enormous amounts of income, and thats there choice.

And unfortuatly CM is in NO WAY a support class, in fact it is the single most offensively powerful class in the game. If a player picks up CM/Rifle, the rifle is the support role in that template..... that is why you see the current "uber template" being CM/Master brawler/Smuggler

What I hear you saying is that credits and potency in PvP are among the most important goals in SWG. Personally, I don't agree. PvP is irrelevant. Credits are only relevant in that they allowthe character acertain degree of freedom (travel tickets, armor, buffs).

What is relevant is the quality of entertainment I receive relative to the time I invest in SWG. Anyone who understands the Role Playing aspect of a game like this knows that no character is limitedby their skill set. There is so much more to being a Ranger (or any other profession for that matter) than that.

Not all players want to PvP. I know that Idon't. Even in the days of D&D, I would choose what you would consider a "support" role. Its a question of choice.

As it has been stated so well in several sigs "Ranger is not a profession, its a lifestyle".

But should you not have the option? The First and foremost requirement of being a Ranger is to master a combat profession. With the investment made, that combat profession should be enhanced to some degree.

The outdoorsman, the one i read yesterday forget the name of it (great post though) and numerous others, are outstanding, even amazing idea's with one exception, that being that everything is creature only. If those ideas where implemented, as just a "plain to-hit bonus" for example it would give Rangers a boost to all aspects of the gaming experience. Those who want to PvP can, those that want to PvE can, everybody wins....

One thing that may help shed light on this issue is that we were told that the Devs decided we were to be the ultimate creature hunters. That is, in part, why we focus on the PvE aspects of things.

Sorry, I'm at work and having to rush a bit. That is not what i meant at all. The WS example was just meant to point out the benefit of that choice in response to the previous poster....not a statement as to the importance of any aspect vs another...

Your second paragraph is exactly what I'm try to get at the quality of entertainment. The more choices a player has the wider variety of possible entertainment....and the more ways to be entertained...

Those who want to PvP can already. You can master ranger and one elite combat class. That's enough to make you viable in PvP in a group setting. If you want to excel at PvP then you're better off combat stacking and not being a ranger. Combat stackers are the top of the heap(excluding Jedi as far as I know). To compete with them precludes being able to make ranger.

"...we were told that the Devs decided we were to be the ultimate creature hunters."

Let's hope that the combat rebalance actually makes this a reality. As it stands, as a Master Swordsman I fear no beast in the wild. It would be great if red-con creatures really were deadly, but could be taken down by a highly skilled Ranger.

PvP, as it is now, sucks.

Bring in line of sight, and some of the other balances, it will get better.

Who really wants to fight all the time - boring and expensive you ask me.

I don't mind being support. If you don't know how to support PvP being a Ranger, sucks to be you.

JB

and notice I was nice and did not say off to BH land with you either. Tho I was thinking it.

PvP sucks --> Agreed...LoS.. would be cool as $hit....

Fighting all the time---> boring and expensive, yeah, but not to everyone..

"I don't mind being support. If you don't know how to support PvP being a Ranger, sucks to be you." thanks for the flame, I'm honestly trying to understand this portion of the Ranger population...and I get smack from you...preciate it.....

And off to BH land.....you know exactly what I meant by that.....BH with tthe requirements removed, puts them right in line with Most of the people who pick up ranger skills (tracking)....most BH's will now pick up investigation to hunt jedi and master fencer or TK......You get most of the benefit of BH, with 1/2 the investment..so think away man....you got something to say... say it...O wait you did, you just followed the "aggresive", with the "Passive". And ummmmm you did say it?.?.?> notice I was nice and did not say off to BH land with you either. I believe thats a misquote as well, I believe what I posted in response to the thread about the scout requirements of BH be removed in the BH forums was "Welcome to Rangerville"

Have we not been told many things by the Devs, that have been completely 180'd. i.e. the original skill/prof descriptions didn't match the reality for most professions...Does that necessitate that most post/ideas should advocate a narrow vision of the profession (just my opinion), in stead of being well rounded, in most aspects of the game....
