Thread: Rangers vs Scouts My first official rant
Well thought out Xion...
I am currently a BH, but have been leveling the Ranger Wayfaring line (exploration continued...). Anyway, I have noticedone thingwith that line.
1) I crawl super fast, bout as fast as most people normally move.
Doesn't seem like much of a payoff imho...
Burst run is still taking the same amount of health / action to use, I don't run farther or faster than I could when I was a scout. And I seem to get spotted by the same types of creatures that would normally spot me. IMHO Rescue is a totally stupid skill atm. It needs some overhaul so that if you are "rescued" both the rescuee, and the rescuer skip damage that turn, and then put it on a re-use timer (15 secs). Anyway, good post I would like to see someone respond to this with some answers. As it stands now, I may just junk my ranger skills and bring up medic or something...
duly noted for inclusion in weekly report.

What about this to fix rescue:
Add a /spook skill which works like /warningshot. That way you /rescue then /spook and might actually save yourself and others too. The advantage to /spook would be a straight skill check vs. having to hit the creature like a brawler (leave the brawling to the brawlers, or even to the brawling rangers).

EXCELLENT IDEA
I agree 100%...
I am going the way of the ranger i have played a ranger everytime i am a character... from AD&D to SP RPGS like ICEWINDDALE, BAULDERS GATES, toEQ, and now SWG...
The Ranger class and the Scout class are 2 very different classes.
A Scout in all actuality is designed to move quick in the wild, hide pretty well, and gather necessities. And incase of war are great advantages of terrain recon. This is a combo of a hunter/smuggler cause lets face it in no game was a Scout ever meant to fight!!
A Ranger is one who is in tune with their surrounding. They should traverse way better then a scout in wilderness, gather resources better, DEFEND (this is big) themselves extremely well, and have the ability to track a fly's flying pattern if needed. This is the combo of a hunter/fighter.
They make look like the same animal but check their teeth...

This brings up the great issue that Rangers in nearly every example I can think of are highly adept at defending themselves in combat.... a ranger should be capable of some combat tricks... but I have yet to see a SWG Ranger capable of any combat trick other than throwing a trap and hitting giant thunes (how can you miss?) better.
Please make the SCOUT the one with the sneaky abilities... the stealthy get in without being seen... and make the Ranger the go in solo and take em out... class.

I agree with this post for the most part but I just want to point out on thing on the "Travel" point. While speed certaintly doesnt have any factor in this, I think what they might have been thinking off is the /maskscent ability, for Master scout its only 50, at Master Ranged its 100...if my math is right. True /maskscent is pretty useless now, but the "In Development" did say Mask Scent would be more useful in their patch that will be coming in a week or two. But even with that I wouldnt mind having "travel" mean something more than being able to hide better, and not even hide from all things, seeing as NPC's arent affected by mask scent only creatures.
Well.... to put some perspective on things... its not exactly unique that Ranger is an offshoot of Scouting... most of the Crafting Speicality Trees are just better examples and rehashes of things you did as a novice artisan...... the difference being.. THEY ARE UNIQUE yet similar and use a "new" type of xp...
Here's a little analogy for you... just hypothetically...
At one time during beta there was an Elite Class called Geologist
A Geologist was an elite class off of Master Artisan.
Here's the Geologist's description:
Geologists continue the studies of the surveyor, furthering theirsample and sample tool crafting abilities, as well as surveying range, resource harvesting, andresource examinationskills.
Here's some Geologist Skills:
- You can sample more resources per harvest (lets say 1 or 2 more)
- You can further examine resources to find out what kind of resource it is (yes you read that right)
- You can now gain the ability to sample fast while prone
- You can build bigger and better sampling tools that give a +0.0005% bonus to sampling speed
- You can further "hide survey effect" for xp... so other's can't see you looking for resources.
- You are well suited to sampling while in combat
It really was a great class.... it promised to be the best solo class where you could travel and explore for the best resources... the problem is... it was really not that exciting and wasn't all that much different than Master Artisan... so they scrapped it...
They made Rangers a class instead...
Wow... I'm so glad they learned their lesson from Geologist...

as per the dictionary:
Scout :
1. To spy on or explore carefully in order to obtain information; reconnoiter.
2. a. One that is dispatched from a main body to gather information, especially in
preparation for military action.
b. The act of reconnoitering.
Ranger:
1. A wanderer; a rover.
2. A member of an armed troop employed in patrolling a specific region.
3. Ranger A member of a group of U.S. soldiers specially trained for making raids either
on foot, in ground vehicles, or by airlift.
4. A warden employed to maintain and protect a natural area, such as a forest or park
I know this post doesn't really bring anything new up... but i was on dictionary.com while
i was reading the orginal post so i thought it would be interesting to share (to further
demonstrate the differences between the two)....and there is more definitions for ranger
but i didn't think anyone wanted to know that ranger is also another name for a seal
(and not the NAVY kind) so i left it out.... anyway i agree with the original rant.

If SOE decides to make us "Park Rangers" I'm not going to sit around telling Yogi to stop eating people's pic-a-nic baskets.....
I don't care what the dictionary says, this is the Star Wars Universe, .... WARS folks... star WARS....The military has been a huge part of this story... and SOE must think in terms of a Ranger being a psuedo-military profession in which case Rangers should be the ones on patrol who are sent on search and destroy missions.
I totally agree with the differentiation between Scouts being SCOUTS ... you know.. the guys in Stratego that can travel really far to see "What's This" only to find out... ITS A BOMB....
Then you send in your Rangers to take out the BOMBS....
Scouts are 9's
Rangers are8's *
I'm not asking to be a 1 or a 2... or even a 3... I just want some Stratego Like Respect... give Rangers a purpose... even if its to blow up the bombs... heck make commando's 8's and give us 5...
But for GOD SAKE... MAKE SCOUTS 9s!!!!!!
Cause... well... thats what they are...
