It chose me?

I also intended on being a creature handler. Pretty soon I had all the xp for Master Scout... and all the xp for one of the first boxes in creature handler. So I had all this extra scouting xp... why not pick up novice ranger for the heck of it? Once again, soon I was at Ranger 4241... and Creature Handler 1111. It was time to give up and go with what I was obviously enjoying the most.

Well, I started as a marksman in Moenia. I later moved from Moenia to Theed because my thug faction was so low, they would kill me on sight. Yes, I couldn't beat a thug solo yet. I picked up scout to harvest hides, and I then picked up artisan. I was going for part weaponsmith/part architect/commando. Well, I harvested a ton of hides, and I made it to nov weaponsmith. I was about 50k from nov rifle too. Then, I went weaponsmith, and I set up a shop in a small town (this was before player cities). I crafted like mad, but I lacked the credits to purchase the resources (this was before 2 cpu grind resources) I needed to attain the Weaponsmith I wanted. My friend was at that time going commando, and had picked up some scout skills. He could pitch tents, and he was always supplying the matinence for our house (yes, this was also back when players SHARED medium houses. I had under 10k cr at this time.). It then dawned on me that I hated to be in a house looking at a wall the entire day. That and my fingers were getting sore from all the clicking (Again, this was the time before macros and third-party clickers). That was when I decided to start going outside. I realized that I needed scout for the run (yes, no mounts/vehicles) to Anchorhead I made everyday. I picked up Scout and was able to train a few boxes from my days in Theed. I then picked up brawler and started to "grind" (grinding wasn't really invented yet) Swordsman. Well, I finished Scout, mastered it, then started in on Ranger. I was having a blast doing it, until I came to the Frontiering line. During this time, my guild moved from Naboo to Tatooine to Corellia. Now player cities came into the story, so I could sit in the Corellian forests and craft my traps. I actually mastered Ranger because my guild decided to sit in my Field Bases for over 1.5 hours straight. Then I switched guilds, and started the holo-grind. I dropped Ranger for ID, then other numerous professions were ground out. I was a Tailor for a while, then decided I wanted to be able to climb hills again. I wanted to harvest my kills again. I wanted to be able to survive out in the wild for days. So back I went to Ranger. I got close to mastering, but dropped to 4440. I mastered Rifleman to complement my Ranger. Then the village launched. I had 3 branches unlocked, so I started the Jedi "Quest" grind. Well, I am currently 22/24 boxes done, and when I finish, my alt will become a Ranger. The third time I've mastered Ranger...yeah, what can I say other than this: Ranger is truely addicting. Once you start down the road, you will always come back to it.

Well, ever since the pen & paper D&D version I played in the 70's/80's, I've always been a Ranger (or Thief)... sometimes human, sometimes elf, sometimes half-elf.

but this is Star Wars, so I chose human.

I picked up the Strategy Guide and as I was thumbing through it saw Ranger and that was my goal upon loading the game!

We may not put out much damage (at least as a Pistoleer... trying Rifleman now) but I like the idea of being able to survive in the wilderness solo. Plus the TN/Maskscent (or conceal) is the greatest! I love walking through the wilds watching all the mobs with ? or ! over their heads as other players go by on their speeders, while I move on unmolested.

All in all, I like being rarer than the jedi... I'd like to see the breakdown of Master Ranger to Jedi on each server.

i love hockey. i became a ranger because i thought i was trying out for the NY Rangers.

but in all seriouslness, i used to be a BH, but travelling from planet to planet fora 2k bounty mission just left me broke. i picked up Ranger for some quick credits.

but i'm not staying a ranger for the money. i'm staying a ranger because i've just really grown to love it. i like being in the minority. i like having a profession very few people keep.

i've had people ask my why i "wasted skill points" on ranger when a harvest droid can do just as well as i can.but my response is always the same. i'm a Ranger because i want to be.

Nemo Wrote:

"I like to go out and wander. Ranger seemed like the profession most suited to that (maskscent, terrain negotiation, etc)."

Im in the same boat as nemo in most regards. I had a very distinct idea that rangers would be the pathfinders and suvivalists of swg so i naturally planned to be one well before swg went live.

What i got was an incomplete profession that is aimed more towards hunting than anything else which is sad in my eyes. Yes we should be able to hunt but it shouldnt be our defining role and purpose. Our primary purpose should be survival, followed by pathfinding, followed by hunting which includes trapping, tracking, areatracking.

Taking a ranger to an adventure planet such asDath should have considerable bonuses such as a hunting bonus, a ranger should be able to exploit each creatures vulnerabilities and open them up to the group. A ranger should be able to errect massive survival habbitats that give great bonuses to the group in termsof regeneration, hunting facilities that force the creature into the rangers domain giving huge advantages to hunting effectiveness. Abilities to go about unnoticed by other players and lay down traps for unsuspecting foes.

Overall though i wanted to be a ranger because they should be:

Pathfinders (Having a ranger in your group in the wild should be a massive advantage)

Survivalists (Poisens, diseases, bleeds, wounds and battlefatigue should never be an issue to an experienced ranger)

Hunters (Unmatched in creature hunting and able to greatly enhance other group member's hunting effectiveness)

Before I got the game I read all the profession descriptions, I read some character creation guides and I read forum posts. I really liked the idea of being a self-reliant being. I took up Scout, Artisan and Pistols. I mastered Scout first, then Artisan and moved into Pistoleer. I worked into Architect, but it was costing me too much money and time. I wanted to get out and explore. I dropped Architect and started Creature Handler, another profession that I had been really interested in. Slowly climbing Pistoleer and Creature Handler, I decided what I really wanted to do. I wanted to continue building my "outdoorsman" skills, I picked up Novice Ranger. After about a dozen different tags, I put up Novice Ranger and haven't had a non-Ranger tag since. I've dropped Artisan and Pistoleer completely and am currently 4/3/4/4 Ranger, 2/3/0/3 CH, 1/1/0/2 Rifleman and 1/1/0/0 Medic. I'm dropping Medic while I master Rifleman, then I'll get rid of my pets and drop CH, probably . If we only had a few more SP to play with.

from the beginning, the idea of being a master of the outdoors appealed to me, but i had actually originally intended on being a creature handler, so i had to start with scout. eventually, while working my way through it, i was told that creature handler was really a 'useless profession' (i joined the game rather late compared to most of you) by one of my guildmates, so i opted to go with squad leader. again, that required scout. but in working my way through that, i discovered that there were very few rangers on my server (let alone female rangers ) and i really enjoyed the idea of being able to survive in the wilderness and make a living off hunting. so i dropped the squad leader idea and stuck with ranger. i changed my mind as far as the combat aspect of my template went quite a few times, switching from pistoleer to carbineer to pikeman and finally deciding on teras kasi, but i never even considered dropping any of my ranger skills and stuck with it until the end. i plan on remaining a ranger for the rest of the my swg experience.

Stalking, fast movement thtough the wilderness, tracking your pray, immoblize it with a poison and advance for the kill. I've always play a thief, ranger or druid so the choice was quite easy. I ca't think of SWG without terrain negotiationn anymore

Well, it took me a while to find my true calling in this game. Started playing the first day it was in stores in the US. I believe my very first character was on Scylla and I started her off as a scout, marksman, medic. Played her up until she was part Doc, part CM, and part pistoleer. This was before "grinding" was popular. After a while I started other characters on other servers, and I think I always started them off as scouts, lol. Liked that starter outfit best. Then, in October or November of 2003 I started Kiriel on Ahazi. Now my idea was for her to become Master Dancer and something else I hadn't decided on. So I started her dancing. Got her up to novice dancer and planted myself in Moenia. I wasn't one of those afk dancers and I did make a few tips, but it got boring fast. So I think my next stop was TKM. Killed a whole lot of critters day and night. But I still needed something else to do. So I tried out Doc. Spend a little time in town healing people, then spend a little time killing critters. Decided doc was too stressfull with all the tells flying my way. This was before I learned of buff macros, and before bank tip lines, lol, so gave that up and tried one of the crafting profs. Can't remember which I tried first, but I know I dabbled in tailor (eek), architect, and a few others. I made master artisan during all that dabbling, and sold a bunch of speeders and swoops. I also took up selling resources, such as steel, copper, and the like. Lok wild wheat and Tat fiberplast sold best so that was my main thing after a while.

My last crafting prof was chef. I actually mastered that one and tried to make brandy and other foods. Well, it didn't take me too long to realize I stunk as a chef, lol. So I thought to myself, ok what do I enjoy doing in this game most? Selling resources. It hit me that I could get meat and hides and sell those too! DUH! So off I went to master scout and ranger. Loved it, loved it, loved it. I don't know why it too me so darn long to do ranger. I always thought Ranger was going to be boring. LOL. Quite the contrary. And I really wished I had read the ranger forums earlier than I did. I think I would have made my decision a LONG time ago, probably when I first started Kiriel.

My profile has a whole lot of prof badges, I look like I was a holo-grinder. LOL. But honestly I wasn't. Funny thing about holos. I can't remember what Kiriel's first holo was. But I borrowed one from one of my guildmatesand it was silent. LOL. So along with "finding myself" I also did all my holos during that time. Hehehe. Now I really wish I could get rid of all those badges and just have TKM, Master Scoutand Master Ranger. Ah well.

No longer selling wheat and fiberplast. Got rid of Novice artisan and took up Novice CH. Just so I can group with a large pet rather than have to go overt and use my ATST to get bigger missions for hard meats. That was the first change to my template since April 2004.

Master Ranger and here to stay.

well I posted something of an answer to this when I first joined the Ranger forums but briefly:

During my pursuit of other professions I mastered scout ~3 times. When working on my primary template CM/Carbineer back in the days when professions were done in months not days, I mastered scout the first time just b/c it was one of the basic professions, gathered the xp as i went (remember those days when hunting with a group everyone would switch off on who placed the next camp.....). Eventually was forced to drop it to hold my dream template MCM/Master Carb, I viewed if as a support template (healer/crowd control), but unfortunately this game forgot the benefits of grouping.

So I decided to pursue BE, try a dedicated crafting prof, where master scout is highly recommended for best /mask skill. Then dropped all of scout again to pursue some combat templates.
Finally needed scout for SL later, think i got to 4044 scout, maybe master, not sure . Then dropped most of it again (thankfully not the camping line). And then I retired from the game for 3 months.

About a month ago some friends started getting interested in the game again, started pulling me in. So I thought about what I wanted to do, looking back, I enjoyed mastering scout every time I did it . I still fondly remember wandering dant for a few days with a ranger friend, found the rebel base before anything was there and a lot of wierd ruins and statues .

Looked around the ranger forums and found an awesome community that shared a lot of the ideals that I have toward this game: all those profs up there took so long b/c I refused to macro or even grind anything, everything ATK as I went along (only crafted in practice while waiting for shuttles etc) and strong aversion to what buffs have become and thus the selection of armor.
And so, Ranger seems like the logical choice. (I also had an interesting RP idea, but found I'm not much of an RPer, so thats fallen aside, but I'm still enjoying the profession)

(Wow that post came out longer than expected)

Well, I personally went into ranger when I saw that I had worked up the xp for it... I still had a bunch of skill points to spend and didn't know where I was going with my character.

But why do I stay a ranger? For the ladies.

Awww yeah.
