Thread: Rangers Lost in the Wilderness

Hey ya'll.

I'm almost positive that I never posted here on the Ranger forums, and I'm not sure that I've ever posted on any of the forums here, but for those of you on Valcyn, I've been there with you in the thick and thin. You probably noticed the towering green trandoshan here and there.

I was excited to hear that our profession was getting a revamp, until I heard it was going to a special ops/spy like profession. When I hear Ranger, I think of a forest ranger, a survivalist who can live in the wild, not an Army Ranger. I understood that the Special ops fits better with the Star Wars Galaxy. With the recent developments, I see my first MMO fading away. The game had unlimited potential from the very beginning, and I've been saying it since the start, "If the developers would just listen to their customers and utilize the games unlimited potential..."

Everything has already been set in motion, and is doomed to release Nov 15. I'm here until the 22nd at least, and will see what happens from there.

I've been there with you from the beginning (August '03), and I'll be there with you till the end.

I will miss my ranger, I came back from a long break this week and after just 2 days of being back they dropped this nonsense on us, it's obvious most of the SWG community is against these new changes just by looking at any forum here

Long ago when I was getting frustrated playing my entertainer I made another character and decided to try Ranger for fun. Boy did I have fun, it took a long time before I finally reached Master Ranger but when I did I felt so proud. Back then we were quite popular, people begged my Ranger to come on hunting trips because of my camps and I could sneak other players past strong monsters, provided they listened to me so my camo kits would actually work. I had customers bug me for hides, bones and meat, Ranger kept me so busy that he never spent much time in cantinas, only when my wounds got so bad that it had severe impact on my combat abilities did I go look for entertainers.

I took up Creature Handler as support for my trusty Laser Rifle and I was pretty much self sufficient and I kept getting stronger too as I took CH higher and when they drastically changed BE pets I got a few of them too, I ended up with one pet that was always at my side. Dino was always with me, he would take the blows from creatures that needed to be harvested for my customers while I was poking them from a safe distance with my trusty rifle.

I even took part in the GCW and turned into a Imperial Ranger, in time I got my rank to Staff Sergeant, I think, I gathered enough FP to requisition a few stormtroopers. With the aide of these Stormtroopers I wreaked havoc on Dantooine, sometimes I spent hours doing faction missions and taking out monsters with valuable resources en route to my mission sites.

Eventually I requisitioned a AT-ST and shortly after that some major game problems started to appear. My pets would run off like crazy when I told them to attack something and if that wasn't enough a major bug showed up that made you go Overt after taking a shuttle. Needless to say after a few trips to the cloning center because of this bug, dead before my screen even loaded, I realised the Developers were in no rush to fix this bug so I gave up on the GCW. Shortly after that one of my best customers told me she was going to play on another server and that pretty much sealed my Ranger's fate.

I logged in less and less until I found another game and uninstalled this game, that was about 18 months ago. Lately I got interested again with all those new expansions and this week I decided to reïnstall, but now i'm hugely dissapointed. Even more when I see them state reasons like "Game not Star warsy enough", "Combat too slow", etc.

I find it ironic, since day one this game has provided the richest Star wars environment I've ever heard of, especially when they introduced the planet raids that happened from time to time, combat sometimes was so fast that I didn't realise half of what was going on because everything happened so fast.

Like I said, I will miss my Ranger just as I will miss my Entertainer, even if these new changes will prove to be good it will completely change the game and it will never, ever be what it used to be. So many players quit since I took my break, things just won't be the same. But I will try the new changes although I'm positive that I won't like them judging by the few questions that actually got answered the past days.

Sorry about my rambling, I was exited about coming back to this game.

I wish everyone the best and remember...

I'll most likely check out MEO when it launches, so we need to get all the Rangers together into one server as a huge Ranger clan.

That would be cool

yeah, since we Rangers are all such a tight-knit community, anyone that goes to MEO could all get in on the same server, since we'd be starting from the ground up. every time we play would be like a Great Ranger Meet.

I was briefly and disjointedly chatting on TC with another forum Ranger (I am SO sorry, but it's my age, I forget names... no seriously ) and at the same time explaining to my Better Half what was changing in the game as she'd heard me tutting and harumphing a bit.

I want to be here when the lights go out and I'm going to do my damnedest to do so.

The changes to the game itself are almost of no consequence to me now, in that I know I'll find some little niche that I enjoy and will while away my time there doing whatever it is I'll be doing. Sure the professions that are going, that's sad, and the change to combat, well, we'll see, and the bludgeoning of nearly 40 professions into 9 classes. Well, as somebody said on a geek forum "that's a pretty brave commercial decision by SOE/LA it could go really well, or it could go a different way".

What I am going to miss are the people, especially the Forum Rangers. I'm more sad that we few, we merry few are going to be nerfed than about anything else in the game.

I'll miss the ladies. Bethya, Dariane, Ebe, Gothywench and the irrepresible Paks to name but a few who have helped make the Ranger forum a special place.

I'll miss the guys, Calc, Drak, Owen, Oreet and Phen. And WildBil and Agon and, well, far, far far too many to even try to remember.

I'll miss the Ranger Iconic Characters.

The irrascible Krayt molester, JB. Grumpy mountain man Frederic. Those of a military bent like Cuchulain and those who were more park rangerly too.

The past couple of days I've scouted about the different boards, looking to see what's going on where. As expected the jedi and BH boards are lit up like bonfires. Bio-engineer and Creature Handler, well, it's a sad time. And on the Ranger forum we have folk writing songs and poems and generally bucking each other up and being supportive of each and every other players decision to either stay or to go.

Not for us the 72pt red letters screaming abuse. But a glass raised, a nod tipped and a friendly, and heart felt, wish for good things to find each and every one of you.

I'm going to go into the NGE and I'm going to wear my Ranger tag with pride.

And when some lvl23 nerf-herder comes up to me in the Jundland Wastes and says "yo! d00d how joo become an ragner???" I'll look down on the youngling and say "Ah, Rangers... once there were many Rangers in the world. Scattered they are now, just a memory..."

Then I'll call down an orbital strike and pwn h!s scrawny a$$!

Travel well friends. Whatever road you tread.
May the good things that are for you find their way to where you are.

Once a Ranger, always a Ranger.

Caboah will always be an Antarian Ranger, no matter what path game mechanics dictate for her.

She will live as a Ranger... I will play as a Ranger... And when she's finally laid to rest, it'll be as befitting a Ranger. No combat changes can ever take that from me or her.

I can honestly say that the Ranger Community is the best group of people i've ever interacted with online. You guys are amazing. I've have honestly, truly, laughed myself into flowing tears reading this forum, specifically the RangerHat thread. i read that through all in one shot and fell in love with you guys.

I've never really been as calm or logical as the rest of you, but I've tried my best to be a good ranger. It's the only thing i ever wanted to be in this game, and the only thing I'll ever want to be. I'm going to try and give these new changes a shot, but I will never ever, where anything but my Master Ranger title. And my forum signature will never change.

I wish all of you the best of luck in whatever you do. I'm going to go see about joining the MEO forums and maybe if things dont work out. I'll join those of you over there.

If this doesn't work out, I will likely play MEO (LOTRO) and I hope to see a lot of you there if I do. Being an Antarian Ranger has been great, and perhaps we could start a guild named that in the new game (no offense to the Imperial Sector Rangers, but the Antarian Rangers sounds better :smileytongue

we need to get all the Rangers together that are going to MEO, and all go on the same server when it launches. we can then start a guild. It would rule to have every in-game day be like a Great Ranger Meet.

Peace to all you guys, I had to stop in and see this..

Get this:

After beta I had no diea what I wanted to be--

Ranger would be my first Elite Prof.... Day of launch I started it finished in about a month after that.

Some funny tidbits:

I use to walk from one end of Dathomir to the other looking for baby rancors -- and mapping the planet out.

I use to tell Newbies that the lazers on the Master Camp would kill them and they beleived it even though it was all the way around it lol.

I use to mask scent when around NPCs because I never really knew if it would work or not.

I use to do area track to find pets I would then sell for 100s of K's.

I use to think that a Ranger could track anything if within 1000 meters (for like a day) lol rip off lol.

I use to help CH's find pets and other classes find People for quests.

I use to Hunt on Dathomir to get trapping XP off of Baznitches...got it fast there too once I made it past the first box I think.

I use to be needed alot of the times to find NPCs to hunt for loot etc..

I use to be the guy they went to FIND Krayts in the game so that my 20 man team and pets could TRY TO TAKE ONE DOWN.

All in all it was my first , I have done all 32 (almost half way on politician) ... I must say it was fun and exciting due to it being the first one I did, sure it had problems but it sure was fun.

Sorry to see it get axed days before it was going to be upgraded .....Peace to all of ya... hope scout is good..

I for one am gonna stick it out, I am to much of a Star Wars fan not 'to do'. If it totaly sx I will be out faster than I can set up a camp.

I most likely will try out STO, DDO, and MEO, as I am a fan of them all as well. I plan on linking up with Wild Bills swg-Ranger site just to stay in touch with everyone who chooses to go.

To those who do choose to leave, I really want you to stay for selfish reason, yes do it for ME. I do understant your reasons, and would never say anything bad about your choices, for freewill is the key ingredient in being a Ranger.

It's been in my blood to roam aimlessly. A scout/ranger has been my only prof for 2 years. Making Master Ranger was a highlight that unfortuantly will not be part of the game, for those that made it or are trying... see you on the other side.
