Calc: you're frustrated with the state of the profession. Asare pretty much all of us. You're also clearly frustrated with the numerous opposing viewpoints on what should be done about it, and how. However, when you, of all people, throw your hands up in despair at the state of things and go into exile mode... it doesn't help. Many of us have the luxury of doing that. But like it or not, you're a respected leader around here, and your words carry more weight.
It's time we had all had a good long think about what Ranger is. This identity crisis has us at each other's throats. Until we can form something resembling a unified front on what Ranger is (at its core-- we all have our unique ways of being Rangers, and no common identity should or could alter that), we'll never move any closer to what we can potentially be.
Let's forego looking into the future for just a bit, and instead take a look back. SOE failed at building us from the very beginning; we desperately need to reexamine the basic nature of our profession before expanding upon it.
I don't intend for this post to offend anyone. But this ceaseless forum bickering, which dances about but never engages our primary problem (in my opinion, anyway. Yes, I realize that it is just an opinion, and I may very well be wrong), has got to stop. We're not jedi. We can do better than this.
Personally, I'm gonna spend the next few days going over The Outdoorsman. I have yetto dothat with a post-CU frame of mind, and it seems like a good place to start. For me, anyway. I implore all of you to ask

Hey, I like Master Ranger. The other day I got an "ooh, a ranger" from a group of noobsreportedly looking for a JSF on Dathomir ran into some rancor trouble, which I saved them from. and then some more oohs when I kicked a Nightsister Ranger arse. No one goes "ooh, master scout". No fun.

I'm personally happy spending my skill points on Ranger in its current form. I enjoy playing the game as a Ranger. That means I am happy to wait for the profession to be fixed properly.
When I get slightly tired of Ranger in its current form, I have plenty of other professions to play around with (I think I'm up at something like 14 different masteries on my main now). I have had fun climbing the Ranger tree again every time I've done it. I feel that Ranger is currently a viable profession and so I am willing to wait until the Devs have time to really make it shine.

Here here .. *applauds* .. With all the respec options all I did with my Ranger character is work a more useful combat skill in so she could at least kill high level critters without someone holding her hand. For harvesting purposes hunting alone with creatures at least Level 40 is enough to gain reasonable resources without the threat of instant death... Imagine my surprise when I found that once I aquired a few Bounty Hunter boxes I could kill a single critter that was within a level or 2 of me with the help of a few traps. For FS xp I hunt in packs, when I feel like it, but sometimes when I feel like it my friends dont want to hunt .. so *shrugs* I need to fight alone. Now that I have finally got her there ... I spent the night before respec start camping so I could honestly say I camped my survival columns (admittedly it was afk but I had crafted the 20 camps I needed by hand moments before I went to sleep) ... I will never let her lose those abilities ..

Heres the thing. Scout+Ranger= Scout withour broken ranger skills. Even if they were to combineRanger with scout, squad leader, or anyone else, they would stillhave to fix our skills/mods/abilitys first. Otherwise you justhave one Uber-Broken proffesion, and your right back where you started. So no matter what happens, were going to have to get a revamp.

yes, that MIGHT, just MIGHT maybe sorta be true. but to be honest i'm dead sure that Ranger will get a revamp. weither its next publish or another 2 years from now. We all (or most of us) remember when They nerfed CH to......well you know..........and they said they would be doing the CU. CH waited almost 2 years, and see where it got them? a GREAT combat class. so i'm willing to wait some more time for this revamp cause i know the devs will do it if its the last thing they do for this game. I know they keep their promises, it just takes awhile.

We're all frustrated and burnt out (I kinda brought this up in another post), but we can't take our frustrations out on each other. Al-djinn'i is right, we need to re-evaluate our needs as a profession and consider the MANY types of gameplay that Ranger affords us. I've never written a proposal like N'Rass' Outdoorsman... but I think it might now.
A while ago I started a post: Origin of Ranger. It kind of is relevant. Sparking discussion is good... but when it gets to hopelessness and name calling, we need to step back.
I want Ranger to live on. And believe or not, all these new faces interested in our profession should be lifting our spirits. I'm seeing more Rangers on Flurry now. More people are coming up to me and asking me about Ranger.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

No, no. I never meant to imply that I had anything to do with The Outdoorsman. It just seemed like a good place to start my own re-examining process, as it is one of the most definitive and comprehensiveproposals ever brought to this forum. The original was written before my time, though I do remember Phenix's revised version coming into play. Speaking of which, any plans for another update, Phen? One which takes the last two months into account?

plans? yes. but nothing has come of those yet. but I do think that the time has come to rewrite the Outdoorsman again. Problem is that many people see different directions in which Ranger should go. Some people want a weapon, some don't, so it's hard to say which ideas should go in and which shouldn't. Because I'm still partial to the idea I came up with for a double crossbow-style trap launcher and traps that can inflict damage.
But this document isn't just about me. It's about the entire Ranger community. I still give all the credit in the world to N'Rass. I'm simply trying to extend the wisdom and insightfulness in his document into the state of the game currently.I'm sure that if he were here, we'd have much better version of the Outdoorsman than I could write. I need to have few more "focus" points for the Outdoorsman 3.0.
