Thread: A Pricing Guide for Animal Resources
Xandrya wrote:Volsted I love your posts...are you a mathemetician in real life or something?
A long time ago, in a university far, far away, I was a Math/Physics double major.
Then I decided I didn't wanna spend the rest of my life glowing in the dark, and switched to History.

This guide is at least a workable solution to my dilemma and I thank you for sharing it.
That's all it was ever meant to be: A workable solution. You can almost certainly make more money by auctioning the stuff off on the forum for your server. But for some folks (i.e. me), that's more of a hassle than I want to put up with. If I wanted to bother with all of that, I'd be on eBay or something. With this guide, I can just slap a price on something, contact one of my buyers, and say "Hey, I have 10k units of Yavinian Leathery Hide. Here are the stats. Here's the price. Interested?" Much less hassle all the way around, and I still make plenty of money.
Also: One feature of the guide that may not be obvious is that you can use the weighted average formulas to let you know what's worth harvesting. If you're killing a bunch of Rancors, and you don't know whether or not to harvest Leathery Hide, Carnivore Meat, or Animal Bone, run the stats through the formulas and see which one is the best. If they all pretty much suck, just harvest the hides and sell 'em to a tailor for 5cpu.
(have to agree about glowing in the dark... not so bad....)
Not only does it work, but if a majority of us use this, we will keep from screwing eachother or ourselves. semi-consistant priceing benefits everyone.
Volsted,
I already gave the float vote
I wanted to check one thing. I started using your formulas and was putting it into my spreadsheet. I noticed your formula for the Herb, Avian, Fish and Dath Insect was listed as
(OQ + OQ + PE)/3
Wanted to make sure this wasn't a typo...the formula below is the same thing you meant about...correct?
(OQ * 2) + PE)/3
Thanks!
I think that 1.5xmultiplier for bones and hides is a good idea. I have some wooly hide I have been selling andby your formula I should be selling if for only 8 cpu, but it sells almost as fast as I can put it on the bazaar for 25 cpu, and last night I decided to see if it would sell at 40cpu and it did, almost as quickly.
I think your formula for hide/bone pricesis too low, considering the prices master armoursmiths charge for their suits.

Yeah, which is why I mentioned the 1.5x multiplier. I sold some Yavinian Wooly Hide recently for 9.45cpu. The buyer was offering 15cpu for 'em in the message board forums. Tacking on the 1.5x multiplier would have brought my price up to 14.2 cpu, which is more in line with what he was offering.
Similar comments can be made for selling meat to bio-engineers. A B-E on Tempest was offering 15cpu for stuff I was selling for 11.4cpu. Tacking on a 1.25x multiplier to 11.4cpu gets 14.25cpu, which again is more in line with what the customer was offering.
So if you feel that you're selling yourself short with your prices for B-E meat, as well as hides and bone, play around with the multipliers and see how that works. I am going to be trying this myself to see how it works.

(OQ * 2) + PE)/3
You're missing an opening parenthesis there at the beginning of the 2nd formula. But other than that, yes, those two formulas are identical and will give the same results.
OQ = 777
PE = 888
(777 + 777 + 888)/3 = 814
((777 * 2) + 888)/3 = (1554 + 888)/3 = 814
Same answer either way. Same formula either way.
Just to throw in my two cents (as a doctor), your formula for avian meat could be modified slightly.
You're right, avian meat is used for enhancement packs, but the actual value of the meat is slightly different from the schematic - it gets complicated so I won't get into it here on the Ranger forum. If you really want to know the gory details, try reading the FAQ.
However, as it turns out, OQ and PE are equally important for avian meat and DR is also important. The power of the enhancement pack is based on OQ and PE (which most doctors care the most about), but the duration of the enhancement is based on OQ and DR. So, if you had meat like this:
- OQ = 900, PE = 900, DR = 100
- OQ = 850, PE = 850, DR = 600
I'd rather have the second than the first, but it's really a judgement on the part of the doctor that's buying it. It's hard to put that into a formula because, when it comes down to it, what good resources are is dependent upon how the resources will be used in crafting - it's a rather complicated process.
Anyway, to sum up all of this garbage, try using this for a Avian Meat formula:
(OQ + PE)/2
and then look for some DR to boot. (Like I said, it's hard to put the DR in the formula as different doctors will hold a different value for it.)
But the result is... my time is now worth at least 10per. There is always something somewhere I can hunt for at least this amount, be it hides or meat. For instance, the herb meat on Flurry is crap everywhere right now. No way it would be worth more than 5per on a pure stats basis. But I am getting 10per for some of it because I simply can't stop hunting hides that I know will go for 15per or so in order to go hunt crappy meat for 5per.
So.. my OWN modification would simply be that anything below 10per gets rounded up.
And to be fair .. for regular customers, ONLY... anything above 20per gets rounded down. But your formulas are solid and I plan to use them in the future extensively.

True enough. In fact, if you wanted a precise mathematical formula for Avian Meat, here it is:
[(1.26 * OQ) + (0.33 * PE) + (0.40 * DR)]/1.99
This formula weights the stats precisely according to the schematic: 60% OQ, 40% DR for Duration, 66% OQ, 33% PE for Effectiveness (or Strength or Power or whatever it's called).
But.
Let's compare two different types of Avian Meat with the above formula:
Avian Meat #1: OQ: 900; PE: 900; DR: 100
Avian Meat #2: OQ: 900; PE: 100; DR: 900
Avian Meat #1:
[(1.26 * 900) + (0.33 * 900) + (0.40 * 100)]/1.99 = 739.2
Avian Meat #2:
[(1.26 * 900) + (0.33 * 100) + (0.40 * 900)]/1.99 = 767.3
According to the formula, Avian Meat #2 is better than Avian Meat #1. However, I don't know of any Doctor on Tempest who would buy Avian Meat with an OQ of 900 and a PE of 100, no matter how high the DR was. Conversely, I know a bunch who would buy Avian Meat with an OQ of 900 and a PE of 900, even if the DR was 100.
If given a choice between "short and powerful" versus "long-lasting and mediocre," most players and most doctors would choose "short and powerful." Hence, I focus mainly on PE and OQ.
Now, having said all of that, you are 100% correct that if the choice is between OQ 900, PE 900, DR 100 and OQ 850, PE 850, DR 600, the 2nd type is the superior resource. If confronted with a choice like that, I might bust out the formula mentioned above. Unfortunately, I am rarely confronted with a choice like that. Usually there's one great meat and a buncha crappy meat.

Yep.
As I said once on the scout forums, 20cpu is the minimum price I would charge for grind-quality fish. If I bothered to fish for grind quality fish. Which I don't.
But I'm also a Master Rifleman and don't need any more Rifle XP. So I hunt strictly for money these days. If I were an up-and-coming Novice Rifleman who needed XP as much as (or more than) money, I'd hunt the stuff that gave the most XP bang for my buck. Which might be something that didn't drop anything worth harvesting. But I could always harvest the hides and sell 'em to a Tailor or an Architect for 5cpu.
if (avian meat=>OQ*PE*DR) then use the formula (OQ*2)867/(56*DR^4)+(OQ+DR)-(PE)*(DR*PE)!=the cpu u should charge....right? No, really, I get what ur saying and ist is awesome. Thanks for coming up with the guide.
