Yes, Astartes, I hate to have my Ranger crest that far hill only to see a smoking, grinding, stinking harvester in the wonderful, pristine valley below spewing forth its pollution.

On a different galaxy, my Master Artisan is busy running around placing those beautiful harvesters in that damnable far off hot sticky, pest ridden valley.

Dleobold, I agree with you but then SWG Ranger is not a EQ or JRR Tolkien Ranger.

So if Rangers can help keep "Wild and Evil" Things away from common folk as long as we are talking about critters, I agree but if we are talking about evil thugs and such, I a really don't think thats a Rangers job.

I do have to admit that my Ranger always attacks every Cannibal and Evil Hermit he runs across.

But your trackingand group leadingideas aregreat and fits right in with a Ranger. Without trying toinfringe on a Squad Leaders job, an advancedRanger should boost his groups wilderness travel speed and reduce visiblity to animals, PC's and NPC's. But only in the wilderness.

Foraging for healing herbs. Yep, fits right in yet would not infringe on a medic.

Ranger dropped waypoints, to show a safe path. Again, fits right in, I would think. The waypoints would be real safe for 10 minutes and the safeness and reduced visiblity of the the waypoints should degrade as time goes on and they should poof after 20 min or so.

Well guys, after playing with my ranger for a couple of days, I must say that I'm selling my ranger skills back. Here are my reasons for doing so: the wayfaring was only good for proning, and since I also decided to switch from rifleman to carbineer, this is not really useful. I usually solo, so the big camps aren't so useful, I rarely have more than 3-4 people in my group if I group at all. The only traps I really use anymore are adhesive mesh and snares, whichare covered by a scout. So I don't really think it's worth the extra points just to be able to pull a few more hides/bones off a corpse.

I really hope they make theprofession better for those of you staying with it, and you have my respect for doing so. I just think I'd be better served with another profession. I kind of like carbineer, so I may work on it for a little bit. Aside from that, I don't really know. I'll probably just play around and have fun, I don't have to master an elite profession in a month (I have mastered two base professions though). If I decide I don't like something, I can sell the skills back and lose only a bit of time.

Good luck out in the wild, guys.

Its interesting to see how SOE can mess so many things up in one game.

I believe the definition of a Ranger to encompasses many of the ideas already expressed in this thread, if not all of them. Yet, at this moment, Rangers are all but useless.

The extra camo is nice, except if you're attack social beasts. Whilst the one you shot doesn't see you...all his friends do.

The extra speed while prone is nice, except that every time you go prone, you end up teleporting a few m in a random direction....at least for me and everyone I know.

The creature-to-hit bonus is useless to minimal at best. I have tier 4 ranger trapping and don't notice any difference compared to what I remember from novice ranger and match up beside my buddies.

And finally, the advanced traps are bogus. 1) They're stupid traps and are useless compared to the adhesive mesh and Phenacin Dart (excuse the spelling). and 2) A flash bomb and sonic pulse bomb....I know its not the Ranger's role, butit seems to me like these would effect a person just as much as a creature...yet they don't.

O ya, and in general, players don't receive nearly enough survival experience and not for enough things. Why is foraging not considered a good way to gain survival experience? Maybe because of macros? But then again, you can macro surverying...... Fishing....this one really confused me. You spend hours trying to catch a fish and you don't get any survival exp for it.

The concept of a Ranger is cool. I think everyone who is into any type of Role Playingor fantasy game will agree that Ranger's are traditionally the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to the wilderness and survival. Unfortunately, SOE managed to screw up yet another profession and the only good thing about a Ranger is the ease at which you can level it compared to other professions.

Sad.....

Quite likely, like 60% of the other professions in the game...its a broken or uncompleted class.

I thank my blessings I cancelled my subscription to this horrible excuse for a game...at least until its in a non-betamode

Have fun...

Rangers have always had the connotation of self surival in the wild. It fits in all versions of rangers (even texas). Regardless Texas Ranger is just a title. Real rangers are able to thrive in any wilderness situation. The RANGE is theirs and theirs allone.

In my mind a Ranger has always been a survivalist, hunter, and explorer. We can either shoot down our prey or sneak right past hostile creatures. Go places normal people cant go unless in groups of 20 because of the hostile enviroment. This is what I got from the game description anyways. Which I am starting to see where I can pass by hard hostile creatures that my friend a master scout cant. I would really like to see where we can camo against hostile NPCs and even PCs. Heal battle fatigue in our camps. swim faster and run on flat land faster.

I was going to post something similar to this.. I'm a few K experince shy of trapping experince to get to Ranger. But I was wondering if it's worth it.. I'm one of those who likes the idea of a ranger. but when I took a good look at the Ranger skill set I didn't see anything that looked like it was actually worth it.

The only thing I saw in the Ranger Tree that I was looking forward to is the new camp sites..

In other higher level classes , becoming that class means something.. Bounty Hunter, Creature Handler, Droid tech, weapons smith.. ect.. In most of these higher classes you get some new skill set for the class.

I was really dissapointed when I started looking at it and discovered that there really isn't anything going on.

Right now there doesn't seem to be a reason to be a Ranger. Originally I thought the navigation bonus would be cool till I read that it only improves speeds of other positions that standing (Which is already maxed out)

It would be cool if down the road rangers where the ones who got the skill set for creature mounts.. though I know CH people would be a bit dissapointed.

Also I don't know if I want to spend all this time on developing a character based on "What if", I might as well be running around at this point roleplaying that I have some super skill as a ranger.

I'm sorry for the long post... I hope it proves useful.

So, in an attempt to create a logical argument concerning the good old Ranger profession, I thought I'd do a little research into the Developer's notion of "The Ranger." The following information is based on the "Updated Manual" which can be found in the current Board system as well as the post from Holocron himself concerning the current ideas that are in development or in theory for the profession. A few quotes to start:

"Ranger: Adventurer well-suited to travel, tracking, and defending others in combat."

"Bio-Engineer: Excels at producing and harvesting organic resources."

"Squad Leader: A soldier whose very presence in a group provides benefits to all group members."

"The Scout is an explorer who is capable of locating valuable resources, moving over difficult terrain more quickly, and trapping creatures. Perhaps the most balanced and versatile of all the professions, Scouts are well suited to hit-and-run combat and long-distance treks."

(These are taken from the Manual as it appears in it's Current State)

Also

"Ideologically, the ranger is still a "super scout." The key is implementing new and unique ways to go about that kind of gameplay." - Holocron (In the Ranger Correspondent Feedback post stickied up top)

Therefore:

A) The ranger should excel as a tracker of both humanoid and non-humanoids (something which right now we cannot do in a serious manner... at best we can say someone might possibly be within 500m of our current location.)

B) The ranger should be capable of defending others in combat (based on the current system we can use rescue, but other methods namely pet tanks; smart battle techniques; and simple team work out value the command. Similarly our camps do not repel aggro or offer any defensivevalue for combat... in actuallity they become a standing obstacle in the event of a firefight.)

C) We should excel at travel (the impentation of mounts and vehicles has really devalued this on our list of unique abilities.)

D)We are super scouts (Trapping is not addressed in the Ranger branch primarily because our traps are not valuable in combat. They don't aid our allies and rarely work on high level mobs... this would be an excellent place to make our value in defensive combat stand out.)

E) We should excel at hit and run combat (Our terrain negotiation is a huge benefit here, however since Cammo and Maskscent cannot be applied during combat, and do not prevent aggro once an attack is launched, they really don't foster this 'hit and run' idea)

As I read it, the ranger accomplishes these goals and could play an extremely valuable role in group dynamics. A ranger is essential for any group hunting creatures, players, or NPCs. Much like the squad leader they should have bonuses for the group they participate in. To some degree they are hunters, but they are also scouts in the millitary sense.

Conclusion: The concept as it exists in the post made by Holocron seems to be an almost complete way to address the role of the Ranger. The only real problem is that we do not exist as we should right now. Two of our trees are useless. The camps in Fronteiring do not work properly, and the skills under trapping are completely useless to a ranger grouped or ungrouped. Don't worry about Cammo, but work on Areatrack to get it up to a more dynamic hunting tool. The profession has the potential to be both versatile and unique but right now its simply stagnant.

We really have a rescue skill? I have failed to notice it

I wouldn't say useless, I'd say BAD IMPLEMENTED. DEVs should change the description of the Ranger Profession if they are not planning to adjust his skills.

Granted /rescue isnt great but everytime I have used it it has worked. Especially once when my wookie guildie was getting eaten by some huurtons after they knocked him down. I laughed as he yelled "Get them off me!" Then I just waved my arms and they came a running. Rare occasion to use it but I still kinda like it.

My thought with this post was really to see what the current sentiment towards the Ranger profession is. There seems to be, in the form of the Outdoorsman Proposal, a feeling that the ranger should be a hunt master... a person who goes out into the woods for days on end and comes back carrying satchels upon satchels of hide/meat/bone/milk etc. What appears to have been the intention was something closer to Squad Leader. Though Scouts and Rangers are meant to be skilled hunters,
Ranger seems to have been designed to provide benefits to group situations. Camps were supposed to prevent aggro and tracking could be used to aid in hunting parties designed to help both harvestors and military strike teams.

My view right now, and my hope for the profession is to see a Ranger type develop that is both a great hunter and an asset to GCW and PvE situations. I think we should be giving bonuses to other group members in the form of Terrain Negotiation and camping defenses, but we should also be able to able to work on our own in the hunting environment. The real issue is just an attempt to try and get a response from the Devs as to what we are supposed to be... so we know what exactly needs work and how drastically.

Some notes for you Wildbill...

1. The Outdoorsman Proposal came into being when the devs said we were to be a creature-centric profession. We read that as meaning we were to be the kings of hunting.

2. While we may not be pushing the Outdoorsman Proposal as much as we had in the past, much of what we ask for comes from that proposal.

3. I will give you a million credits if you can get a dev response .
