Thread: If you could build a camp that did something other than heal, what would it be/do?
I guess you are right my type of camp/bunker would be rather useless apart from PVP and Rifleman use. Specially when you consider the short sightedness of the trap tree. They just don't make sense. Heaving a "can of annoyance" at a mob that isn't a grenade. I mean honestly in this age of technology, why would I bother making a trap that makes it "weak" when the point here is to KILL the mob, not "TRAP" it. I would find a way to make explosives not sticky goo. I say change the traps into more of a poison/acid attack. Running around like a fool with a blaster in your hand not firing but instead lobbing cans of whatever just seems silly. Unless of course they are doing some type of damage. The effects of the traps we have are cool and I would like to see that we have them at our disposal, however the way we go about using them seems odd.
So ya, if you are to follow along and try and compliment the other tree's then the only camps that will ever make sense are camps that you sit in and heal up /repair/ create stuff in. Which I find little use for. Making a camp of illabrate measures every 3-5 minutes just doesn't make sense, and if they stay up for a long time then they need to either give exp differently or give us a HUGE chunk of exp after it has been up for hours. And who fights in just one spot for hours? Most nests/spawn spots...disappear shortly after 45 minutes whether the mobs are in combat or not.
wow I just kept going.
/rant off
for now!
Four sides, samll ditch surronding it and smal stone/earthen walls. Give everyone inside it a defensive bonus. Make it semi-permanent. Also let Rangers attack from it. Possibly, make it attract creatures.
Like has been said, a high-quality one or two person camp would be great. I personally don't hunt in groups, most of the rangers I have met are the same. We're mostly loners
Portable turrets in the camp and a watchtower. Former is from Jedi Knight, latter would help detect beyond 128m (perhaps the full range of the radar?) A mobile shuttle pad for emergency evac would definately be cool.
I "second" the blinds. I want to hunt like they do in a Safari. Scientific missions to "observe" wildlife without resorting to killing and sponsered by a research center or university would be cool as well ![]()

Yeah I really like that idea about the combat, it is very annoying that the tents disbands the way it does.
One Ranger had an idea not long ago. That Master Rangers could get a new type of camp that is a temporary housing unit. The idea is we Rangers don't always like civilization and that we could have some sort of semi-permanent "house-camp" that we could lay for a maximum of a week or something. We could drop items (a reasonable limit of course) and the "house-camp" would then be a temporary structure (that would take a lot) that would be our home for 2-7 days. We'd have to pack up and re-dploy or take off somewhere. That would add value to the prfession because there would be a decent place for people to meet/log out in very remote areas of all planets.
That was me ![]()
The camp was modeled after the Base-Camp types you see in National Geographic specials. I saw an impierial outpost in the game already that kind of gave me the idea for the SW version. It would almost be a small house. open roofed walls with a tower you could enter and a small room in a corner that had beds. The tower would confer radar extention (and perhaps ID coverts) and the corners with portable turrets. You would have controls as a house for access (ID to let in or not, need merchent to charge still). Thing is a base this powerful would have to be built by an Architect, same as a house but the high camping skill would require a Ranger to set it up.
I can't remember all the details, the thread is here somewhere. I think some werelogging out would keep the base there, allow those to access it to use it (like a house). Breaking camp would not "consume" it (why do camps get used up any way? that seems silly to me) and you could login and out safe there. The outer dimensions of the walls would be a square the size of a small house with an access gate at one end. LOS would be lost behind the walls, but not in the tower, yielding a good defensive position. It should take some time for an AT-AT or AT-ST group to take it down and have defenses for this (might take several to really take the field base, Ion cannon in tower?)
Most I can remember atm...
Given the large quantity of resources that ranger camps require, something needs to be done to encourage players to leave them up longer and leave behind the "disposable camp" notion that works well enough for Scout camps.
1. Camps do not self-abandon when the camp creator enters combat.
2. Ranger camps have increased lifespans before self-dismantling, possibly as long as several hours.
3. Ranger camps gradually manifest the various amenities they provide, maybe over 5-10 minutes, rather than instantly popping into being. That I can instantly set up a dome tent and a cot (which would take 10-15 minutes in RL), I'm ok with. That I can instantly set up tables, chairs, awnings on solid posts, containers, huge tents, and high tech crafting stations, just doesn't make sense.
4. Likewise, the defensive and healing benefits of ranger camps start low ("keep your shirt on, I'll have all the medical supplies ready in a few minutes...") but ramp up in effectiveness the longer the camp remains up, up to whatever final value/rate is appropriate as "full strength". I actually think this should be the case with ALL types of camps, for whatever benefits they provide.
5. Ranger camps provide bonuses to whatever Tracking abilities we eventually get, due to help from technology (radar, infrared, windborne scent detectors, whatever) that the camp provides.
6. Camps are the main location in which harvested resources can be transformed by Rangers into cool trophies for group members to take home and mount. This could be either additional schematics that require the standard bones/hides/meat, or a new type of harvestable item that isn't a usable trophy until the ranger cleans it up and makes it presentable while in the camp.
Ok, nowI understand. Current camps will be fixed and we are giving ideas for additional camp types. In that case, my "dream camp" would be a hunting blind that would offer:
- Group bonus to camoflage
- Group bonus to melee defense
- Group bonus to ranged accuracy
- Group bonus to meleedamage
- Stays put for a longer duration
- Stays put during combat and when not in camp
However, the real value of this camp would be as a place todig inyour group, while the ranger tracked and pulled mobs back one by one (assuming we were able to do this). Otherwise, as I previously stated, you would be re-constucting it every10-15 minutes.
Of course, another solution would be to put it on wheels, allow it to hover and make it submersible. Then you've got the perfect killing machine, ranger-style! ![]()
**edit**, I just had another thought. Once the space expansion hits, it may be possible to travel to low-atmosphere or non-terraformed planets. Maybe rangers could deploy a "harsh environment base" that would allow us to mitigate some of the harmful effects of these worlds. In other words, you would have bonuses similar to those proposed for the "hunting camp" as well as a reduction of negative modifiers caused by thin air, low gravity, too much methane, etc.
Ok, so I'm totally spitballing on this one. It was just a crazy thought. ![]()
Several things would be nice
Mission Terminal or Datapad so that a large group could stay on the move.
Heals mind at twice the rate it heals the other pools(So that medics can do their job faster in camps. There are many times in my groups with combat medic, commando, BH, myself, and rifleman PAmates where we wait for mind pools to regen)
Droid Recharger..You mentioned it, it's a good idea.
For it to ACTUALLY WORK at deterring mobs/npcs.. lol
Maybe a ranger only usable thing that will refine meats/hides/bone... what I mean by this is we use it to make our resources go higher quality.. but at a cost.. Say we have 100 overall quality 800 hides... We can use this terminal to boost it to be 80 overall quality 1000 hides. Basically losing 1 hide per 10 quality boosted. THis would also make it so we could make cash better off our existing skills because we'd be able to provide the VERY BEST in hides/furs/bones, which is how it should be.
I'm a big fan of the hunting blinds to aid my concealment skill, and I'd also like to see some kind of futuristic sandbag-style fortification to augment my ranged and melee defense. However, what I'd really like to see would be "trenches" that I could use to link my camps (Which I would like to stay alive, even when I hit combat) with my remote camo blinds and bunkers. The trench would be covered over by a force field to prevent anyone from jumping in, and would link all my tiny little battle camps. Example.

(My Camp)=================(Bunker)
If anyone has ever seen the intro cutscene from Brood Wars, you know what I mean.
the funny thing is...before the game was released I got the impression that at ranger lelvels the camps were semi-permanent. Not as permanent as a house but something that you could leave for a while, do your business, then com back to...kinda like a relocatable house or something.
Why I got that impression I do not know. But I like the idea..a semi permanent camp that lasts days not minutes...can take bone/hide/material as manintenance but doesnt last forever.

I would like a High Quality SINGLE person camp, as a lot of us are loners.
Smaller, less resources, less inv space, basically the novice scout camp size but different graphics, a more advanced look to it and protection against aggros and a heal modifier of about .85, no crafting stations needed.
The setback?..No crafting stations, same small radius as the basic camp so a large group wouldnt fit in it. (or big pets)
I'm quoting myself...lol. I like my idea! SORRY! lol
I want the above camp to be constructed of only bone and hide. NO STEEL! (maybe 15 hide and 15 bone)
Mineras made a great reference to the Dagobah scene when Luke made his little camp and met Yoda. I need to watch that again for ideas.
BTW my camp is inspired by my roleplaying in this game.
I want a party to jog by and see a ranger alone in his survivalist setting, rugged, self reliant. Not run by and see party tents and picnic tables.
But the high quality single camp would need it's own graphics so people would say "Wow, cool you must be a Ranger" like they do with the big circus tents we get.
